First time I've seen Germany wearing black since Escape to Victory.

So, Brazil and Portugal play to a scoreless draw in a game where both were guaranteed to get out of their group. They need to change a rule somewhere, because that is lame.

So, how will they settle a tie when time expires? Some kind of shoot-out?dune stroller wrote:That one did, but after tonight every game has to have a winner.Freakzilla wrote:Yeah, ties suck.

Yeah, 30 min extra time and then penalty kicks. That does tend to make good TV.Freakzilla wrote:So, how will they settle a tie when time expires? Some kind of shoot-out?dune stroller wrote:That one did, but after tonight every game has to have a winner.Freakzilla wrote:Yeah, ties suck.
Can also ruin players lives though, such a shame.

Re: [Totally OT] World Cup prediction thread
Sorry, Freak.
It's quite odd for me, all this World Cup stuff.
I used to follow soccer when I was a child growing up in the UK - well, you just did, that's all - and later, my cousin Bruce played for Liverpool and I still had some interest in the game.
But by now, and in common with most white Seffricans, I mostly ignore it. The hoop-la with the World Cup has quickened my interest again a little bit, but there's much more to see and do in this world than a couple of dozen blokes running around after a ball. So the hectic partying has passed me by. Except for 2 in the morning when I get woken up by a bloody vuvuzela that is.
I'm aware that England is playing Germany tonight, and that it's quite an anticipated match, especially by the police - I might watch it, or I might find a fascinating chocolate cake to bake.

Re: [Totally OT] World Cup prediction thread
I just had enough of the why Soccer will/will not "catch on" in the USA horseshit ...
this game is deeply embedded in the American culture, and not just from the "immigrants" ...
we've had what, three generations of kids now grow up playing the game, since Pele in the 70s ...
you can't swing a dead rattlesnake and not hit an American kid under 40 who played the game ....
it may be fashionable for an American to say they don't like soccer and don't get the
offside rule and such ... those people are pretentious pricks ...
what these shitheels mean is "Why Soccer won't pull the Big-Money like the NFL & NBA" ....

Re: [Totally OT] World Cup prediction thread
One huge problem, though: those three generations of kids have not grown up to become adult soccer fans. There's almost no correlation whatsoever.
Yes, youth soccer is gigantic in this country (I think it might be our biggest sport in terms of sheer participation). Which is great; I wholeheartedly agree that it is a relatively simple sport that requires little equipment and helps our little video-game addicts get off the couch and into some fresh air. I've got no problem with any of that.
But, typically, they hit high school age and either shift into (or are dragged by desperate coaches) our more traditional team sports or else drift away from soccer altogether. Eight years later (by the time college is over, generally speaking), they have fond memories of playing youth soccer, but zero interest in actually following the sport.

Yes, I am. He was a useful cousin to have in Salisbury (now Harare), because you could go into the direst poor quarters and not be mugged.chanilover wrote:You're Bruce Grobelaar's cousin! That's even more impressive than being Frank Herbert's grandson

A bit like Rounders, you mean - or Hockey, to make a better parallel. Hockey as played in English girls' schools, I mean. We all played it but dropped it as fast as possible after we left school. Yes, funding seems to rule.TheDukester wrote:But, typically, they hit high school age and either shift into (or are dragged by desperate coaches) our more traditional team sports or else drift away from soccer altogether. @Aquila ka-Hecate
give my regards to Bruce - from a liverpool supporter in Denmark. He was one in a million

Liverpool
Winner
Football League First Division(now Premier League): 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1985–86, 1987–88, 1989–90
FA Cup: 1986, 1989, 1992
Football League Cup: 1982, 1983, 1984
European Cup: 1984
Charity Shield: 1983, 1987 (shared), 1989, 1990, 1991 (shared)
Screen Sport Super Cup: 1987
My support for the club is on the decline though, as it's run and owned by amateurs!
btw - is anyone watching Tour de France this year?

Do not be quick to reveal judgment. Hidden judgment is often more potent. It can guide reaction whose effects are felt only when too late to divert them.
