Maybe not, but the recent Facebook movie may have let them to think it's possible to adapt such a story with success. Either way there's still cries of "Hollywood has run out of ideas!"

Historical movies aren't new (and that is what this one is), it's just that the current trend is for more recent history - like The Queen or Frost/Nixon.

I think you're right. As world cultures become more homogeneous and global we should be seeing a shift in the "historical" pieces we see in media... Movies on the creation of Facebook and Google, both tools that help/ed in that globalization and the creation of the so-called "world village" are just the natural progression of things; it's what's most relevant to us these days. Still, is this really the thought-process behind the production of these movies?

I definitely think that the Facebook movie, and the perception that it's going to make money, has a lot to do with the Google movie getting developed. I think it's probably fair to say that the Google movie is part of a trend specific to the Facebook movie.
