That d00d must be like 90 years old. No wonder the site is still down. He's probably looking for the punch cards for the program.

Apparently Kevin's not nearly as old as he looks.

NOT to make light of the misfortune of others, but Teg and I talked on the phone around lunchtime yesterday and kinda wondered if this wouldn't be a great way of
disposing of a lot of unfavorable material that was still on the board.
If Byron or someone else were to, say, start deleting threads, people would eventually notice and complain. But if there's a database failure and backups weren't kept ... whoops! oh well, too bad, what? Sure, a lot of stuff will be in the search engine caches for a while, but eventually it'll be replaced and disappear. New board, new content, stricter controls than before, WELCOME TO DUNE WORLD! Everything nice and happy looking for the new book series and upcoming movie!
The webmaster is Kevin's uncle, remember.
We get our chuckles from conspiracy theories like this.

This actually went through my head breifly too. I'm not a conspiracy theory type guy though, so I've em the benifit of the doubt. I'm sure if they wanted it cleaned up they'd just do it.

Bah, I've read enough of Hyppo and Arnie to last me a lifetime already.....
Nekkie, start the countdown.....

I did on Chig's blog, but I don't think his theory is too far off the mark.

We're working on it. Other things going on at the moment. She should be back up this evening if all goes well.

That's for sure. The flotsam has already started showing up here.
Other things going on? Care to share?
(More than the confirmation that the board for fans isn't your highest priority, I mean.)

Well, Chig just feels that if he doesn't get to have any, nobody should get any.

This is obviously a server-admin, not board-admin, problem, so it's not Byron's "real life" that is at issue. (Frankly, with his ER job and, I assume, his own writing, I don't know how he keeps it all going. Everything else aside, I do realize he puts a lot of time into the board.) If there are "real life issues" that are the cause of the delay, then the problem is Mike Anderson's.
I assume he's being paid to admin the site. (Even if only in kind, with all the free meta-tag advertising for nephew Kevin and the free hosting on Dune Novels of his MySpace/Wordfire blog mirror.

) If all parties concerned had their shit wired (hmmm...how likely is that?), they should have stipulated expectations as to services to be provided, no? If not in a written contract then at least verbally.
I don't know anything much about Mike and his professional background, but he's probably in his mid to late 60s (Kevin's 46 now) and, yeah, he has a wife and a real life. It seems to be taking a long time to get the board back online, though, if he was doing his job right.
(I've pointed out some of the glitches on the site. There were several a while back that I got tired of bitching about and finally wrote Mike about. He was very cordial and soon fixed them. FWIW.)

Quickly! Arnoloco and co must be licking their computer screens in frustration.

Definitely.
I'm watching for the little shite to try slipping in [here again] under another name.
Is it still down?
(I can't tell from home. I'm still getting the "You have been banned..." message. Nice to know that part of the boardware is so robust, eh!

If it were my board you'd have had missiles homing on you every time you get on for a view.

Im still getting that "this shouldn't have happened" message. Is everyone else getting the one that says its down for maintenance?

message_die() was called multiple times. This isn't supposed to happen. Was message_die() used in page_tail.php?
been getting the above message for few days now.
I think they might need MacGyver.

The maintenance message is a regular webpage that Mike has linked to from the site front page/portal. If you use a bookmark to the BBS, you see what you see depending on your status there. I get "Critical Information" with the orange planet at the top and the black starfield...the Solaris theme, in other words.
Didn't someone mention something about it supposed to be back up by evening?
This is a good warning for you guys: whenever you add a major new functional mod or update the boardware, always keep a pre-update copy of the database [as well as an archive of the pre-update boardware].
I take this continuing delay to indicate that Mike didn't do that.
Ah well.

Don't do that!
Made me look to see if something had changed.
I briefly considered looking through the code again to see if I could guess where the problem is (obviously the "check for banned IP address" code is working fine, so the problem is
after that in the execution flow), but then I thought...
WHY SHOULD I?!

sorry, you probably had it coming though. And in answer to your question, because you're stalking them?

Yea, Chig, how could you bitch, stalk and moan about them if the site is down? Hurry up and help them!

Oh, there's still the mirror of Kevin's MySpace blahg (called the "Dune Blog", strangely enough...seeing how it usually is more about Kevin than about anything Dune related). That's the true mother lode anyway.

I'm surprised KJA hasn't myspaced about DN being down. I guess he wouldn't want his fans to know that a discussion board exists. Got forbid he let them suck his cock somewhere he doesn't have a web presence. They probably wouldn't do it where they couldn't look up at him anyway.

Not much patience here, is there?

I remember a couple of years ago when my primary gaming site was down for nearly two weeks, and the offline message the admins posted was just to "be patient and have a cup of tea."
Of course, the webmaster of that site was (and still is) an idiot as well.
(and no, I wasn't on staff at that forum, so no snide remarks, please)

A site being down for two weeks is ridiculous, unless there's RL influence.
More than that is just pathetic.
