This one in particular caught my attention.
The mentioned rule is a very good idea. I surf a lot on miniature painter boards and sculpting boards and such a rule would have made a big bunch of threads way more peaceful. Specially when it comes to criticism of peoples work/art, threads can easily go out of hand....
Hi the_Badsmile. This rule hasn't been without its conflicts. Many screeched with dismay at what they perceived as "their right to say whatever they wanted." Kind of a first amendment argument. But this isn't a public forum. It is owned and operated by the Herbert family and we have every right to impose such rules. Mostly this was done because a loud, negative, vocal minority (with WAY too much time on their hands) decided to sabotage the boards with as much negativity as they could muster. It worked ...for a while.
I hope you enjoy your stay here and can have some great conversations.
It's just a shame that the "vocal minority" was the majority of the active members and probably the most knowledgable dune fans on The Net.
But y'all have a business to run, so it's understandable. Signing up a new customer is ten times more profitable than keeping and old one.

do you mean because of the misleading tagline for Merrit's board ?
atleast the sietch is number 2 now, ahead of the dune-buggy forum,
and the stillborn SyFy thing ...
btw, Omphalos: as an average citizen, what I can do about this blatant case of false advertising
being perpetrated by the Herbert Living Parasites ? And how do I complain to Gooooogle ?

Part of what might make them higher in the rankings is all the linking that is done to that site by this one. It's fine to quote, but as soon as we start linking to them it helps their ranking. All links to that site should be banned here and we should start linking more to this place on other sites.
edit: fixed typo that was bugging me.

Nebiros has started a lively discussion by reposting his "turning points" theory at DN.
Mike Q wrote:
AWESOME POST!!! You've obviously put a LOT of thought into this, and you've really "GONE FOR IT!!!" Great Job!
I do think that you're a little bit negative towards Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, although I'm not really sure I understand this sentence:
What Brian and Kevin fail to understand is the action sequences and the time between novels weather they are written or not does not matter.
Again, it's a GREAT EFFORT, and I want to commend you for your insights into the historical patterns present in the works of Frank Herbert. However, I would like to offer you a little bit of friendly, constructive criticism so that I can help you to make some POSITIVE changes in your writing style.
I think that the following sentence is a TAD bit clearer: "Brian and Kevin fail to understand that these kinds of turning points are the only events worth dramatizing. They often make the mistake of making action sequences out of every mundane, violent event, and the story becomes mechanical, banal, and anti-climactic."
To be honest, I think that's a little bit on the negative side, and that you should take other tastes into consideration. Some people love explosions! BOOOM!!! It takes all kinds.
But seriously, great post, Nebiros! VERY interesting analysis! Keep writing and you will contribute GREAT things!
Do you have any plans for college after you graduate?

well now, the weather may not make much difference to Brian, he doesn't get up off the couch much anymore,
and who could blame him, really? I mean, the kitchen can be a scary place ...
but a coupla brisk days with a little north wind blowing, and Keith could be 100 chapters behind schedule,
and have to rush to finish talking the manuscript into his microcassette recorder in the Camry in the parking
lot of the bowling alley where the ceremony for the award he was almost nominated for is being held, and
I think that could only lead to a few rough spots in the final product ...
wait, what ?

Shouldn't you have called me 'he who must not be named'?
I wanted to see if anybody there was smart enough to debate me or ad any good input to my theory on the writing. So far very little except that bit of advice on how to explain what Brian and Kevin fail to understand.

Having delusions of grandeur again?
(I'll clue you in, OK? No one dislikes you enough to make that much effort.

I don't think anyone is capable of handling the Logic Engine that is Nebiros.
After all, you were able to make a prime projection and rank the mates of Frank Herbert based on how much he loved them based on very little evidence. You're like a freakin' mentat.

Nebiros, if you have a way of determining how much a person falls in love, and why, you have a moral obligation to reveal The Rules to the rest of the world.

That would be one possibility.
Or he could just be lurking all the time.
Or he might post over there and then watch for comments here.
I've got a finger up my nose to the second knuckle right now trying to determine whether I care.

Erasmus' story, especially his curiosity of our human behavior was told in a graphically explained series throughout the novel. They even shared the history behind how he became an independent thinking machine.
Oh, you were serious?
I thought the whole idea of the Butlerian Jihad was completely wrong as far as consistency and the characters were cliche and one dimensional, if that.
But, on a positive note, it was completed on time and I didn't actually have to expend energy thinking while reading it except in my Herculean effort to stay awake through each of the 100 three page chapters.

It seems My thread was removed. Hmmm... maybe Byron thought I went too far on criticizing Brian and Kevin?
Or did somebody else say something out of line?

I might have thought that was the reason he removed it, except that the one sentence that was critical of Brian and Kevin didn't make any sense.

Nebby, it's stupid to post anything over there that you really believe in or care about. They don't respect the contributions of people who really love the original books. They just want the cyberfellation of the braindead.
Let them rot in their own stench.

Since Byron took down my thread, for once I agree with you.
What is becoming of Dune and the HLP? I actually liked the House Series and bought all the books up to Sandworms of Dune, but for the THIRD time they give me a reason to dislike the new books and the HLP.
