How funny would it be if they were pushing the limits of their contract by posting here at all? :P
BTW, I agree.
Leto II is gone for good, except for OM. The "pearl" was just that; a miniscule portion of what Leto was, and not a compressed version of the whole. The pearl that the worms have do not make them Leto, or in any way similar to him.

For anyone who's interested, I posted an entry on the wordpress today regarding how this project all came about, which can be read here:

Yeah, I didn't think that it would make any sense for them to charge for the rights. That would just be crazy.

Sounds like a cool project. 8-)

I don't think we have the same definition of loyalty as that bunch of blood sucking useless idiots, but hey if people who like Frank enough to go through all that trouble are prepared to deal with them why not ?
If dealing with the HLP is the only way to avoid legal problems I guess there isn't much choice...

IThe teaser looked... teasing ...
And it really seems they put some effort in this thing, so I'm quite curious to see what comes out of it.

And btw, I feel better now, just a slight headache but nothing that some wine and foie gras won't cure :)

Well, Byron's pulled his fingers out of his ass and posted about it on both The Dune Saga and Official Dune pages on Facebook.

I guess the key is groveling beforehand. Pity the Spanish folks didn't know that.

Edit: And the dumbfuck Twatting as @DuneNovels has come out of their hibernation to Twit about it as well.

My, my, what a coup! Kudos!

I’ve spoken of “contracts” because lately, I deal with many, but there really only is one contract with the Herbert Estate. I won’t post it, but, in the interest of transparency to the fans of the late Frank Herbert, I will say that there is no money involved. I didn’t buy any rights to this story, and the Estate has asked for nothing, except my loyalty to the story and the contract. In exchange for finishing a quality product that stays loyal to the original work, I receive the permission to submit this short film to festivals and contests. I don’t make a penny from this work, and all money covering production costs come solely from the resources available to me…I don’t make any money from it, but I can show it to the world, and that’s enough for me.
damn. I guess Keith got a different contract, huh ?

Uh... yeah, that is pretty rich.

You don't owe them anything, and you shouldn't think that you're submitting your film to festivals because they're being gracious. Not even HLP would be crazy enough to go after a student film. Whatever happened to the Werner Herzog philosophy of film school and independent film, where the most important thing to learn is how to pick locks and forge documents, and all that stuff...

I was wondering about something: is the official title of the film Frank Herbert's Cease Fire, like Frank Herbert's Dune is the title of the first mini-series?

If so, was that something decided by the filmmaker, or suggested, requested, or mandated by the Herbert Leeches & Parasites?

Works out nicely all around, though, what? Helps draw attention to the work of someone new and otherwise unknown, and is free advertising for the kafirun.

Sweet.

Frank's name is a selling point - this isn't just another student film, it's a student film based on a story by Frank Herbert - the guy who wrote Dune.

I wanted to let people know that the teaser will be coming down tomorrow (Monday) night, so please check it out while you still can!

I just wanted to tell people here about a new short film in production right now, adapted faithfully from the short story, Cease Fire -

As this is a student project, we have a very modest wordpress site up at the moment, which has a teaser and various information about the project itself - principal photography will be finished in January, and we're aiming to have all post-production finished by May.

Critique on the wordpress and the teaser are welcome - thanks for checking it out!

Is there a reason behind that? Are you permitted to post the finished film online?

A teaser wouldn't even have gone up if it weren't for some of the stipulations for the class I'm submitting this for. We aren't done with principal photography, so a proper trailer just isn't possible, but the teaser really doesn't do much more than tease...some of the most important dialogue in the script is in the teaser, but it's all voiceover, and not taken from actual footage.

As far as the finished video being posted online, it will be posted, but I can't say for sure when.

Someone asked about the Spanish fan film after the posting about this one on the Official Dune page on Facebook.

Wonder how long that will be left up.

Ah, cool. I thought teasing was the point of a teaser, which yours did admirably. :)

I wasn't going to mention it, but...

Nah, it's not that bad.. but something a bit less obvious would give the project a little more class :)

Actually, I'm going to go to the design department at my school for the typography, titling, and webwork - I'm not much for typography and webwork, I was just doing what I knew how until the project became official.

I couldn't find the classic eye font - there are some quite close ones, but that wierd K is unique.

Wouldn't want to second-guess this guy, but a nice condensed sans serif font - with loads of space between the letters where appropriate (al la: C . E . A . S . E ...) might look rather spiffing. :)

Gotta love that lysergic jaw-clenching edge that LSA lends to things. I miss hyperspace, but I haven't been healthy enough for a good excursion into the other 7 dimensions for many years now. Hopefully I'll have the chance to take such a ride at least once before 'publishing' the pilot episode of my web series, since psychedelia were such a huge inspiration for its plot....

I've never really had that ... I think that might be from something in the seed casings, tho -
I'm fairly sure that any nausea anyone would get is from that -

I don't grind the bindweed seeds into too fine a powder, just a few go-rounds in a peppercorn grinder, to bust them open;
tried mortar&pestle before, but those damn things are just too hard - like little rocks ...

I let the seed-sludge soak for several days, more if I forget about it, strain the stuff and toss the seed-sludge back into the garden ...
the mixture is less potent, of course, but I gots bindweed to spare around here ...

I've tried seeping the seeds, whole and unbroken, and crushed, in a little black iron tea pot over a campfire,
but I don't think heat-vs-cold soaking makes any difference .... altho, it's cooler to be out in the woods and
sippin' hot bindweed tea with a little bourbon in there for flava ...

the LSA-extraction process seems like too much fucking trouble, and alot less "natural", altho I'm sure
that's how you'd get the really potent end-product ....

I did figger out something new, tho ... if you take about two hundred bindweed seeds and run them thru a coffee grinder
with your regular coffee beans, sew that up in your coffee sock and toss it in the campfire pot, adding a few dollops
of jalapeno jelly to cover-up the weird taste of the seeds, you get some really good camp coffee that kinda makes you
feel freaky and good for awhile .... I think I'm gonna triple the seeds in this recipe, and dose the fuck outta some old
men @ re-enactments this spring ....

BTW, that jalapeno jelly in the coffee is a winner at any time; it adds just a touch of sweet, and the jalapeno flavor
kinda bites you as an after-taste ... I like it, anyway ....

Hello again, everyone!

After a long winter and beautiful start into spring, we're finally approaching the finish of film production on Cease Fire! As such, we're reposting the teaser for the film, to soon be followed by an official trailer at the end of May. We've also started a Kickstarter page to try to drum up funds for the last bit of production - this is a student film, shot with no financial backing from anyone but family and friends, so we're now reaching out to the sci-fi community for support in succeeding in our last push to get the project finished. If you have a chance, please check out the teaser and the Kickstarter page here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mor ... y-jacob-co

Thanks - and keep an eye out for the trailer this summer, and the finished film in the fall!
