Coup in Honduras

Post by Nebiros »

This situation is complicated. Apparently the President of Honduras has been dragged out of bed and flown to Costa Rica by the military.

What happened was that the President of Honduras was going to hold a vote on a constitutional referendum so he does not have term limits and continue social reforms to help the 70% of the population that are poor. The congress and supreme court of Honduras declared this illegal. With their backing, the military overthrew the President. Soon after a new president was sworn in.

International reaction has been unanimously to condemn the coup. Hugo Chavez even threatened military force if anything were to happen to Venezuelan diplomats.

How screwed up is it when your democratically elected president offers you a vote on your countries future and then the parliament, the courts and the military stab him in the back. The problem is the supreme court said that a constitutional amendment is illegal. The supreme court of course have the final say. But this coup was entirely unnecissary because the vote would be unbinding. As long as the supreme court says so, the constitution stands no matter the President’s objections.

It’s still too early to tell what will happen, but I’m guessing that this coup will eventually be aborted like the 2002 coup against Chavez.

You're right, it's incredibly complicated. Thank you for summing it up for us in such a short post.

Ah, I get you now. Been a long time since I read any Lewis Carroll. I have memories of him being quite weird, but that could have been simply my age (very young).

They could have just impeached the guy. With the backing of both the congress and the courts, I'm sure it would have worked. It might be a slightly more tedious process but it's better than telling the military to drag him out of the presidential palace still in his pajamas and deport him which is illegal. If he was impeached, he would at least be legally forced out of the presidential palace by the POLICE if he does not voluntarily leave.

Again I think this coup will be aborted. There will probably be large crowds gathered in the capital, chanting the name of their former president and demanding him to be reinstated. The military will then be pressured to arrest the coup leaders and allow the former president back into the country. I could be wrong, but there does not seem to be sufficient support for this coup internally or by any foreign governments.

Looks like I was wrong about the coup collapsing. The new government has lasted longer than 48 hours (the coup against Chavez in 2002 lasted 48 hours).

Now I think the only way this issue will be resolved is with the election later in November.

Have you guys heard about ousted Honduran president Zelaya'a attempts at returning to Honduras despite it being clear he would be arrested. First he tries to land his plane in Honduras but soldiers block the airstrip. He said that he would have jumped out with a parachute if he could. Now he is just waiting on the border with Nicaragua. He goads the military to arrest him by repeatedly crossing the border and then going back to Nicaragua. He seems to be waiting for his supporters to arrive at the border so they can escort him to the capital.

He has no idea what to do right now.

right, but the Canadian Contingent chimed in with
"Chavez is crazy" - threatening force to protect diplomats
is SOP for just about every nation on earth.

& BTW, is there a setting that would ban me from reading
& posting in the POLITICS! forum ?

Are you kidding!?!

The Canadian Contingent © strongly objects to very idea of SandRider's banning from the politics forum. I....er, we request (demand) the formation of a new forum subcommittee to investigate why board administration is discriminating against members who talk down to Canadians on the basis of their nationality! We request (demand) the right to be patronized, as a Canadian imperative! We need $12 million minimum start up cost and a panel of no less than 30 (but no more than 42) completely over-educated and unqualified members.

Yo pass dat bill, my nigga! :P

What does the acronym SOP stand for?

Or maybe I should ask the question with another acronym I made up: SIO
