I'm slightly disturbed by the (apparent?) retroactive application of the rule in this case...but not enough to protest, especially considering the result.

Just so that you know, it was not retroactive. Freak posted the new rule, then afterwards arnoldo went and put up this:

I got a funny feeling the new rule is tienes que hablar ingles, no espanol.
which I deleted as being in violation of the new rule. This post was put up after Freak announced the rule, as a clear and willful violation of it. I regret deleting it now, but Freak said that would be the punishment, so.....

It only appears that way because the offending post was deleted. Seconds after I made the rule, he commented on it in Spanish.

You know I don't mind sending Prequelites screaming to meet their infernal father in hell, but this did seem to be more of a rule tailored to a specific individual than anything else.
Like what about Leto? If he or someone else joke again(or w/e they did) in French, as I believe has occured in his welcome thread, will he get smacked on the head too?
In memory of Perach, who suffered and died needlessly.
I wish I could have been with you that one last time.

I think it's more Arnoldo's defiance of the rule than the actual rule itself that got him banned...Freak can juged if someone makes a joke or not...
I'm just concerened about rules being made to target specific individuals while also hindering in potential other, benign users, who wouldn't in fact get hurt by them.
I'd have just banned the fucker without making a new law as an excuse, considering the majority of the public already accepted him as a nuisance and wouldn't raise their voice about it.
In retrospect, I should've banned the hallucinating bafoon(you know I'm talking about, Freak) without giving him all the time in the world to test us.

This is no slippery slope. As for arnoldo's banning, he was given fair warning, in particular about antics, not rules. Arnoldo was a known troll who delighted in dancing on the line and bending the rules just far enough not to break them. If a rule was bent to ban him, I call that poetic justice at it's finest and I applaud the irony.

I don't think you have to worry about that, orald. Freak has a very high BS level, and Ill defer to his judgment on this board before I ever ban anyone. Its not my sietch, after all. But this really was about arnodildo willfully defying Freak, not really about him accidentally violating a rule. Anyone else (well, almost anyone else) will get more chances that that little troll.

I didn't make the rule to target him. I only speak English so I think all posts should be in English. If someone doesn't like it, they can find a Dune forum in their native language.
I told arnoldo to tread lightly and he would only get one chance. Even knowing his previous record as a troll, I still gave him the benifit of a doubt and offered him a clean slate.
He deliberately defied me, so he's gone. End of story.

Well, I fully understand why Freak did it. And don't really blame him. But, I think we (if there is a "we") should be careful that actions like that don't come across as intimidating to others of opposing viewpoints and steer them clear of participating. I already know what you die-hards think ( ), I don't mind hearing some opposing viewpoints/opinions....I don't want people like Simon to feel unwanted and decided not to participate is all I am saying.
