Usually the books doesn't explain well except stereotyping.
I think Navigators are mostly female and Sea Mammals. Also they lose their gift with age.( By their teens, caused by puberty?)
Sea Mammals are very excellent navigators underwater just using sound waves. In space they would be using a higher demension waves.
From other sci-fi novels there is clues.
Star Wars....Chriss young female navigators and space whales.

When I was at a Later Day Saints Sunday service, a elder just asked me where is the Portal. I just reply, " do you think it will be that easy".
At the moment I didn't know what he was talking about and why I answered him.
I started use my mind to figure out what he was talking about and I came to the conclusion he was looking for the Portal in the Halo game.( Librarian's Portal hidden on Earth that leads to the Ark)
I have a gut feeling I somehow moved it and I for some reason I don't understand told them I put it into the center of the sun.
Just recently there have been dark spots on the sun as large as planets. My gut feeling is they are looking for it in the sun.
It's not in our
sun because that would be to easy.
For me to move the Portal that is 117 km in diameter,who am I and how powerful am I? And moving it right under their noses without out them knowing.
And I'm just a Fool.
