Everything I could find that BH and KJA stole from the Encyclopedia

Post by DrunkenIdaho »

Of course this is far from a complete list at this point, but I will continue to expand the list as I find more things that were stolen.
  1. In The Dune Encyclopedia, the Butlerian Jihad was sparked when the abortion of Jehanne Butler's daughter Sarah by a thinking machine led to a revolt on Komos (Ix). In Dune: The Butlerian Jihad, the Jihad begins after the murder of Serena Butler's baby Manion by a thinking machine causes a revolt on Earth.
  2. In The Dune Encyclopedia, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen had a father called Gunseng who was a "good" Harkonnen who was indifferent towards the Atreides, a bitter mother called Muertana, and a mentally challenged brother, Araskin. In Dune: House Harkonnen, we are told that the Baron had a father called Dmitri who was a "good" Harkonnen who was indifferent towards the Atreides, a bitter mother called Victoria, and a mentally challenged brother named Marotin.
  3. In God Emperor of Dune, all we are told about Norma Cenva is that she was the true designer of the first Guild ship. In both The Dune Encyclopedia and Dune: The Battle of Corrin, however, she is also the first Guild Navigator, and made the first melange-guided journey through hyperspace around the time of the Battle of Corrin.
  4. According to The Dune Encyclopedia:
Contributor of NERUS, TANIDIA in the DE wrote:Jessica's real mother was the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, who used the name Tanidia Nerus when she presented herself as concubine to the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
She is also Jessica's mother in Dune: House Atreides (which of course makes no sense).
  5. Both The Dune Encyclopedia and Dune: House Atreides reference a rebellion on Ecaz:
Contributor of ECAZ in the DE wrote:The "Slagging of Ecaz'' — an Imperial answer to a burgeoning rebellion — resulted in the complete destruction of all human artifacts.
KJA in HOUSE ATREIDES wrote:After the Ecazi Rebellion, Emperor Elrood had decorated brave young Dominic and granted him an expansion
of his fief to include other worlds in the Alkaurops system.
  6. According to The Dune Encyclopedia, the brother of Duke Leto's father Minotauros was named Paulos. In Dune: House Atreides, his father is named Paulus. The Dune Encyclopedia also states that the father of Mintor and Paulos was named Minos. Dune: House Harkonnen mentions that Paulus' grandfather was named Miklos.
  7. Vorian Atreides in the Legends of Dune trilogy is very clearly based off Demetrios Atreides from the Encyclopedia. They fight in the Battle of Corrin and lead victory in the key turning point of the struggle. For this they are generously rewarded by the first Emperor (Sheseut/Faykan) and this leads to the beginning of House Atreides.
Power attracts the corruptible. Absolute power attracts the absolutely corruptible. This is the danger of
entrenched bureaucracy to its subject population. Even spoils systems are preferable because levels of tolerance are
lower and the corrupt can be thrown out periodically. Entrenched bureaucracy seldom can be touched short of
violence. Beware when Civil Service and Military join hands! - Murbella
