Question about Arabic words

Post by E. LeGuille »

I suppose this is more fitting for the local linguistics here, but I am having an issue grasping at any sort of understandable concepts about time in Arabic languages. I suppose maybe because I don't have the ability to read it, that it poses a problem. Does anyone know the anglicized Arabic words for temporal passage?

Sorry, been hibernating.

What exactly are you looking for? "Arabic words for temporal passage"... you mean the words for things like "day", "night", "month", "year", etc?

Perhaps something that relates to "Infinity" or "A time that never ends". Specifically anything to do with the concept of time's passage, as well. I am attempting to come up with a working title for a project, and I have been looking around for foreign words.

I was under the impression Sha'i Hulud was an interpretation of deification, and Hulud was the specific definition "Home." I dunno. I know that the Fremen hold Shai Hulud as the deification of Earth in physical form.

"The Fremen have a saying they credit to Shai-hulud, Old Father Eternity,"

...

SHAI-HULUD: Sandworm of Arrakis, the "Old Man of the Desert," "Old Father
Eternity," and "Grandfather of the Desert." Significantly, this name, when
referred to in a certain tone or written with capital letters, designates the
earth deity of Fremen hearth superstitions. Sandworms grow to enormous size
(specimens longer than 400 meters have been seen in the deep desert) and live to
great age unless slain by one of their fellows or drowned in water, which is
poisonous to them. Most of the sand on Arrakis is credited to sandworm action.

As far as I know the literal translation is basically A Thing of Eternity, hence my screen name. So I'm betting one word means "thing" and the other might be something like you're looking for.

That would make sense. I know Sha'i is a deified name of some sort.

I have no idea if it makes sense really, just my uninformed logic working on that one! My Arabic is limited to using their written numerals, "Shai Hulud" and a few other phrases from Dune, Allah Ackbar, and I think sallam (no idea how to spell it) is some kind of greeting but I don't have any clue what the meaning is.

That's it, about as far from an expert as it gets!

Shai-Hulud :
  • Shay : {شئ} ,arabic, "thing" (french: "chose", "réalité")
  • Hulud : neologism, from Khulud/Khulood {خلود} (?), arabic name, "eternity, infinity, immortality" [Khaled Bayeheldin hypothesis]
  • Hulud : neologism, from hulûl (?), arabic, "incarnation, Immanence, divine presence, in which the divine is seen to be manifested in or encompassing of – i.e. "immanent" to – the material world" (french: "immanence", "grande pénétration", "profondeurs insondables") [Christian Jambet 1st hypothesis]
  • Shay-e hulûl : persan (farsi), "In depth presence" (french: "la présence qui habite l'intérieur/qui réside dans les profondeurs"... literally "God amongst Us")[Christian Jambet 2nd hypothesis]

Neat, I like how both the 2 in the middle make sense in context, I guess it's logical that a word about "forever" would have some relation to divinity.

These two, I should think. "Harq al-Ada" is another example of where FH simplified an initial kh- to just h-.

Sounds like you need a term from Muslim philosophy or mysticism...

You mean you don't have libraries where you live? That IS sad!
