Second Annual Dune Fan Fiction Contest!

Post by SandChigger »

Talos is off having his tubes lubed or something so I'll announce this!

See this page on HToD for the details. (If you can't be bothered reading the "rules", or don't want to visit my site for some reason [fear of contagion, fear of boosting my traffic stats, whatever], well... just sod off, m'kay? :) )

Basically it's the same set-up as last year (send your submission as styled text [= italic, bold, underline] in an email message, no file attachments, to fanficcon at hairyticksofdune dot net; submissions will be reposted anonymously by Talos here in their own individual threads and as separate posts on the Hoary Tales blog on HToD), only the selection of the three winners will be the same as during the McDune Parody Contest earlier this year, not by a panel of judges like last year. (Voting thread opened here after the submission deadline and everyone has had a chance to read everything.)

Any questions or inquiries should be sent to the email address above or PMed to Talos Aquinas here on Jacurutu. (Don't ask me, I'm compartmentalizing and out of it after this. ;) )

(Request to admins: could this be set up as an announcement in a new "2011 Dune Fan Fiction Contest" subforum? Shukran! :) )

Bah! I can't be bothered clicking a link to another website just to read rules. I've got more important things to do, like post Duncan/GEOD slash fiction. And no, I don't mean the book.

Wait, what?

Where we're going we don't need rules.

So the voting system is the same as the parody contest, but this is the serious contest? Man, this is getting complicated. ;)

I'm still very proud of The Quarry but … let's face it; in the end the real best way to sign off would have been with a great big rollicking Culture novel.

I know, right ?

I mean, this "contest" or whatever is announced, but then there's no indication of when the submission deadline is,
or even how to submit an entry ... I guess we just make a new new topic, or do we post our submissions in this
thread ?

seriously, it shouldn't be that difficult ...

We have our first entry, but Talos is being contrary (something about forgetting his password? Was Alia wrong about being able to depend on a machine after all?!) so it's going to take another day or two to get it posted here on Jacurutu. (It is already available for your reading pleasure on the fanfic blog, but I know how strenuously some people here object to visiting my site and with what suspicion they regard any links to it, so I leave it as an exercise for potential/wannabe readers to find your own way there. :P )

Well, folks, times up. What happened?
I tried to write a story, but couldn't get past the first few words. I couldn't even decide what the first few words should be.
I bring nothing to the table.

I'm sure more entries have been sent in. It takes some time to edit them since copy/paste doesn't include bold or italics, and I'm not sure how it works on Chig's site. I'm looking forward to reading the other entries.

Two Fremen were walking on the sand when one Fremen suddenly stabbed the other. That night, he celebrated with his hot new wife. The next morning he was dead from being a coward.

Now THAT would have been a fun story to read, Amp. Inspired by anything in particular?

Fremen will be Fremen. Although sometimes if the desire is strong enough, they will break tradition and just stab another in the back. That's why the tribe mentality is so strong, the others will punish those who cheat to win.

The main idea I wanted to write about would be an old fremen training young tribe members in the ways of the tribe, and focus on why the Fremen don't change from their lifestyle and why they stay hidden in the desert. Why they don't change their traditions, etc. Then they two youngest trainees return home to find their father has been slain in combat by a kid not much older than them, and an outsider on top of that. Of course, this is no ordinary outsider, its a young man named Usul.

I ran out of time, because I knew I'd have to go back and read through Dune again to really make it feel real.

Sounds very interesting. I'd love to see how you'd balance out their feelings about Paul, between the killer of their father to Mahdi who changes the very fabric of Fremen livelihood. Looking forward to reading it.
