Wonderful reading. This is what I love about telling stories too - the research with an aim, and finding bits and pieces to use in filling out details.

In addition, I'd like to beat Keith over the head with this, "Many of those details contribute to the story without ever appearing in it."Freakzilla wrote:"...Dune is a sword-and-sorcery story."
How many times have I said Dune was Fantasy?
"If I don't tell a good story, even if I create a world, there's nothing novel about it."
Did you get that, Keith?
Thanks for posting Kwisatz that was great. I'm in the process of updating and revamping my Dune course and that will make a great addition. Does anyone know if this text exists anywhere else or the proper citations for it?

It's In introduction to Italian Dune by Sperling and Kupfer as Askaris mentioned earlier (I also have a copy of it). It could also appeared under different title as in bibliography in DoD.

Kwisatz, I've just finished going over every entry in the Dreamer of Dune bibliography. There is a speech titled "How to Live and Create in a Dune World." However, no information is given as to the date or location of where the speech was given. There is no mention of Amra at all as a published source in the bibliography.Kwisatz wrote:It's In introduction to Italian Dune by Sperling and Kupfer as Askaris mentioned earlier (I also have a copy of it). Yes, I know, I didn't see Amra either.
I'm compiling a list of magazines and books mostly in English which I didn't have already. List has over 500 items so far with lots of items I haven't seen anywhere earlier. Maybe I'll publish it here in the future

I swear I have read this speech elsewhere, for the life of me I can not remember when or when ... frustrating.

Great stuff. And from Amra, too! (more well-known as a Robert E. Howard/swords-and-wenches publication).
And, my God, it's impossible to resist stating the obvious: Frank Herbert knew that world-building involved a bit more than breathlessly gasping out an outline while on a 1.2-mile hike to McDonald's. MyGod, Dune could not possibly be in worse hands ...

It makes me throb.
Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

Kwisatz, do you speak Hebrew? I would love to know what the titles read for each book in the Hebrew series.
I bring nothing to the table.

I bet he just has all those because he thinks the writing looks cool.
(I notice the eye seems to be an almost omnipresent motif.)

Hey, man, some people get those Japanese-writing tattoos just because they look cool. You never know.

Also, he's a collector, so who knows? I was looking for this information awhile back and ended up on A Song of Fire and Ice forum. Some guy there was talking about Dune, and he spoke Hebrew, but it was an old thread and the guy was no longer active.

I'm just giving you a hard time, man.
I wonder what those tattoos really say, too.

I speak only Polish, English, German and could read also in Czech. I could read Greek words, but don't really understand them
From editions with alphabets I couldn't read - Hebrew is the least cool The coolest is Thai - reminding me of Fremen from DE
The titles are (from left to right): HoD, ChD, DM, BJ, HH, HC, Sandworms, bottom: HoD, ChD, DM, Dune, HA, GEoD, CoD. Next picture: Man of
Two Worlds, The Heaven Makers, The Eyes of Heisenberg, The Godmakers. But they could translate them a little different
Interesting thing about title translation was in case of Polish WoD. 1st version - Wiatry z Diuny, 2nd - Wiatry Diuny, 3rd - Wichry Diuny (similar to Czech Vichry Duny). Wiatry means winds, Wichry means gales and its a more poetical word, cause wiatry also means farting
The eye motif - I think it's omnipresent eye of God

That was also my first thought, but not all of them are blue within blue and also it's a 'chosen nation'. Therefore I made this religious association.

That is interesting. It's funny how that worked out.Kwisatz wrote:Interesting thing about title translation was in case of Polish WoD. 1st version - Wiatry z Diuny, 2nd - Wiatry Diuny, 3rd - Wichry Diuny (similar to Czech Vichry Duny). I had thought maybe someone just had a thing for huge disembodied eyeballs. That God Emperor cover sure is creepy, though. Evil looking. Leto looks like some sort of creature from Hell.Freakzilla wrote:I was thinking about the eyes of the Ibad, from the spice.Kwisatz wrote:The eye motif - I think it's omnipresent eye of God
Yes. I can read Spanish and just a little French and Italian. Enough Portuguese to sort of make out what's being said.Kwisatz wrote:they could translate them a little different

On the covers that I can make out the translations are pretty much word for word, except for the Chapterhouse title, which changes a little bit.
SandChigger, would you please tell me what the Japanese versions read?
