Chapter 42

Post by Freakzilla »

You cannot avoid the interplay of politics within an orthodox religion. This
power struggle permeates the training, educating and disciplining of the
orthodox community. Because of this pressure, the leaders of such a community
inevitably must face that ultimate internal question: to succumb to complete
opportunism as the price of maintaining their rule, or risk sacrificing
themselves for the sake of the orthodox ethic.

-from "Muad'Dib: The Religious Issues" by the Princess Irulan

Paul successfully mounts the worm and the rest of his band climb up to join him. Stilgar berates him for not calling for a second due to drum sand behind him. As the mudir of the sandride, it is up to Paul to chose their destination and he wants to go South to see his son and time to contemplate the future. Stilgar knows about the unrest among the young men and wants Paul to go raiding with them, but Paul insist on going South. They decide to stop at Cave of Birds at Habbanya Ridge for the evening meal and prayer when they spot a far off thopter. They dismount and hid in the sand until it passes. They think it is a smuggler scout looking for spice and decide to bait the sand with a false spice blow to teach the smugglers a lesson for going to far into Fremen territory and to let the men practice with the new weapons Paul has given them.

Someone asked about how the other sandriders got up the worm after the first person:

Paul saw them come up, using their hooks to climb, but avoiding the
sensitive ring edges until they were on top. They rode at last in a triple line
behind him, steadied against their hooks.

Just because I thought of it deliciously funny:
"Suddenly he understood why Stilgar had warned him once about brash young men who danced and played with these monsters, doing handstands on their backs, removing both hooks and replanting them before the worm could spill them. " pag. 262, Dune
