Addressed and answered already in another thread (oddly enough, the Jessica of Dune one), just the other day in fact.

Yes, space-folding is in effect FTL travel (because you cross a distance faster than light itself could) but in that (in its final version in the later books) it does not (seem to) involve acceleration or other motion, I don't think of it as "FTL" as commonly used in the genre.
OK, so it's just hyperspace rather than FTL travel. How nerdy do we want to get over this?
Very nerdy. See, I don't think it's hyperspace, either, as hyperspace travel still involves piloting the ship there, and moving through hyperspace. If foldspace is truly "travelling without moving" and moving "in the blink of an eye," then, as SandChigger pointed out, it's not really "travelling" in any traditional sense of the word.

Basically, you're not moving faster than light, because you're not moving at all.

Have to be careful not to phrase it "moving without moving", since that's a Lynch Dune creation. ;)

see, I started to jump all over that, but just let it go.

Hey, I read on the internet that the wierding modules
in the new movie were going to be light sabers .....

{I never get tired of that !}

Ha. I'll try to remember that, though it is a rather concise way to explain it, no?

And lightsabers would probably set off the Holtzmann Shields, right? Big Explosion. CROSSOVER FIC!!!!!!!!!111one!

EDIT: Just to be sure, I was kidding...

Usul would not heed the Imperial Surgeons warning about smoking .... after the tracheotomy,
he would require an Ixian breathing device ....

I guess he must not have ever seen this then.

To be fair, though, he may have been seduced to smoking by this ad.

VERY nerdy. It's what I do. :wink: And, agreeing with someone else here, I also wouldn't call this hyperspace, though that may not be far off, I'd compare it to wormholes.
