Did it ever get to the point of deciding a name over there? Didn't Myron try to shut down any con talk with his usual official HLP negativity?
Yeah, I recall something like that.
The Leeches, I mean, Herberts haven't copyrighted "The Great Convention" yet, have they?
Probably won't until we try to use it. That's the best, obvious name. I wonder if KJA knows what it means?

About the topic...

I would take the whole Nobel thing with a grain of salt. The Obama presidency has been the most monitored one in history, I'd bet. I don't remember Bush or anyone else getting a report card from CNN. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. By all means, keep a close eye on the presidency. It's just that he's made a lot of great diplomatic moves that while people like me find admirable, others see it as pandering or bowing down to other countries. Because of Bush's actions and policies (and many other things from the past) much of the world regards the US as the bully on the playground. I guess there are many in the US who wouldn't have it any other way (especially the neo-conservatives) but I agree with those who feel like the US could be a lot nicer to everyone, in both words and actions.

That said, it is apparently true that the Peace Prize is given out as an encouragement to those who are just beginning their peaceful efforts. What pisses me off the most is the fact that he has been awarded this, while commanding a damned war! That's just a little backwards.

Obama can't win, no matter what he does. He could find a cure for cancer and cure all cancer patients in the country, and people would bitch that he's attacking the private sector for taking their business. Have you seen how Glenn Beck (and many other right-wingers) were ecstatic that Chicago lost the bid for the Olympics? That's right, they hate Obama more than they love America.

Even though my political compass falls left of center, I am a conservative sympathizer. This doesn't mean that I didn't think Bush was a complete failure, he pretty much was. I just think that the court of public opinion can be a tricky thing. I was hoping Obama would have waited four more years. Whoever followed Bush was going to be saddled with enormous expectations. Unreasonable expectations. Obama will need the full eight to steer us out of Bush's legacy, and even that might not be enough time. All that said, I shudder to think what would happen if the vocal majority, slim as it is, got their way. Aside from the wackos at Fox and a few other neo-con sabre rattlers, it seemed as though the vast majority of the pop-culture participants were in the Obama camp. This is the most visible and vocal sector of our society. And yet 48% of those who voted did not want Obama as our president. This is not an unusually close percentage as far as presidential races go. As a matter fact, it was one of the more decisive elections in recent memory. To me, the thing that differentiates those 48% from previous voters who went with the loser is the lack of a moderate faction. Perhaps that is Bush's worst crime, the significant erosion of moderates due to his inept leadership. We are more polarized than ever before, it seems. The level of vehemence and vitriol from both sides is appalling. All I know is I don't want to live in a society where all people are one or the other, even though that might seem appealing. Rather, that would just hasten our already speedy descent into stagnation.

Yeah, that's true. Oftentimes it's downright immature. Notice how comparing the president to Hitler is now perfectly acceptable in the mainstream right-wing media (and yes, the right-wing media is now apparently the mainstream), but during the Bush administration it was the worst thing you could do during "a time of war." I won't get into why I think the latter comparison is much more valid, but it goes to show exactly what you're talking about, Spicelon.
Freakzilla wrote:He promised transperancy and accountability, it's his own fault he's under a microscope.
Good point, but I'll take a leader who promotes transparency and invites scrutiny any day, rather than a secretive administration that promotes flag-waving, no-questions-asking support for a war with shady motives. Spicelon is also right about the expectations after such an administration. So I suppose this no-win situation for Obama's actions is healthy, despite being terribly non-constructive.

Ah but you have to remember that 48% of less than 60% of the registered voters is still somewhere between 20-30% of the country. In most presidential elections, you are lucky to get 40% of the registered voters to actually vote. Now imagine if those 60% voted for a third party, or fourth, or fifth, while ignoring the media's claim that said candidate is not viable. The republicans AND democrats would be relegated way off to the side somewhere with a few members in the house, senate and local offices, while the socialist, green, libertarians, labor, etc had their shot at running the country. Nah, it is better to ignore politics and watch whatever reality tv show is new

I doubt Fox would let him on these days. The Republican party has been hijacked by people like Limbaugh. Once upon a time, the Republicans stood for something. They would claim to be the party of principles. And while I rarely agreed with what they stood for, they usually followed through with their principles. I.e., catering to the rich and corporate elite. Whereas the Democrats would take a stand, only to fold on their principles and instead ended up catering to the rich and corporate elite. Well I guess the Dems haven't really changed, but now the right seems to be taken over by radical wingnuts like Limbaugh, Berg, et al., so much so that even Gingrich is considered a moderate.

Newton Leroy "Newt" Gingrich (born Newton Leroy McPherson; June 17, 1943) is an American politician who served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. In 1995, Time magazine selected him as the Person of the Year for his role in leading the Republican Revolution in the House, ending 40 years of the Democratic Party being in the majority. During his tenure as Speaker, he represented the public face of the Republican opposition to Bill Clinton.
