Anti-Obama 'tea party' protests mark US tax day

Post by Freakzilla »

NEW YORK (AFP) – Critics of President Barack Obama marked national tax day with "tea party" protests that Republicans called the birth of a grassroots opposition, but Democrats dismissed as a fraud.

Modest crowds gathered under blustery skies in Washington, Miami, New York and Boston, with several thousands meeting in Sacramento, California, to protest taxes, government bailouts and Obama's big-spending budget proposals.

Organizer Eric Odom said protests were to take place in almost 800 cities in a "new day for the freedom movement."

The demonstrations, styled on the famed 1773 Boston Tea Party revolt against British colonial taxes, came as Americans rushed to meet the annual deadline for filing income tax returns.

Protests featured tea bags, iced tea and other tea-related props, complete with a planned re-enactment of the original dumping of tea into Boston harbor.

But despite the catchy theme, there were questions about whether the scattered, mostly Republican forces could achieve a significant turnout.

The Republican party has been in disarray since Senator John McCain lost the White House to Obama last year and support from senior figures to the tea parties appeared lukewarm.

While Newt Gingrich, a former Congressional leader, attended a New York gathering, McCain's vice presidential pick Sarah Palin was among several prominent leaders staying away, according to the Politico news website.

Protestors were also weakened by broad support among Americans for Obama's far-reaching economic policies, including a 787-billion-dollar anti-recession stimulus package.

A USA Today/Gallup poll published Wednesday found that a majority of Americans favor Obama's expansion of the government's role in the economy, at least for now.

One of the bigger demonstrations took place in Washington near the White House, where about 1,000 people waved placards including "Stop Big Government" and "Taxation is Piracy."

"My money is disappearing," said one protestor, Marilyn Henretty 70, a retiree. "We are tired of being taxed without representation."

Police told the rally to disperse after someone threw tea over the White House fence.

Fox television news -- which along with conservative radio shows gave intensive coverage to the event -- showed footage of a crowd in Sacramento that it said numbered 5,000.

Much smaller rallies took place in New York, Boston and Chicago, and other cities in Democrat-leaning California.

Around 1,000 people attended an event in Santa Ana, south of Los Angeles. "The tax situation is just getting out of hand and spending is out of control," said protester Daniel Flucke.

In Miami -- a city hit hard by the collapse of the real estate market -- around 200 people turned out at the downtown Bayfront Park.

Many demonstrators carried American flags and signs with anti-Obama and anti-tax slogans. One placard even suggested a change of job for the US president: "Obama for president of Cuba," it read.

"People are here to... bring Congress under control and ask Congress to start acting like adults," Ken Clark, a Miami resident and protestor told AFP

Dick Armey, chairman of the conservative Freedom Works group, described the tea parties as "the shot across the bow as taxpayers defend themselves against out of control government spending."

But Democrats scathingly attacked the tea parties as an imitation grass roots, or "AstroTurf" movement, manufactured by fringe elements of the right.

The tea parties "have been largely a creation of the same gang that already ran conservatism off the rails," wrote David Waldman on the liberal Daily Kos politics blog.

Obama sought to catch opponents off guard by defending his policies at a meeting with working families at the White House. "I know that April 15 isn't exactly everyone's favorite date on the calendar," he quipped, referring to the US tax filing deadline.

The man credited with sparking the protests is CNBC television commentator Rick Santelli, who called in February for a "tea party" to oppose government bailouts for mortgage defaulters.

The clip of Santelli's angry outburst has been viewed on YouTube more than a million times.

The protests stand out for the use of Web-savvy marketing, something barely seen in McCain's unsuccessful presidential bid.

That, says Odom, is one reason why the tea parties could be the start of something much bigger: a grassroots Republican movement able to match Obama's formidable support network.

But liberals mocked the protests as a flop, even poking fun at Republicans' seemingly innocent vow to go "teabagging," which in slang means a sex act.
I couldn't go to the one in Atlanta, I had to work so I could earn more money for the government, but I heard they had 10,000 people show up at the capitol building. Funy how they don't mention the one with the largest turnout.

GOP hopes to build momentum behind 'tea parties'

By SHANNON MCCAFFREY, Associated Press Writer Shannon Mccaffrey, Associated Press Writer – Thu Apr 16, 6:30 am ET
ATLANTA – Republicans have lost their grip on Congress and the White House, but they claim to have American anger over taxes and the economy on their side as tens of thousands turned out for anti-tax "tea parties" around the country.

Wednesday's rallies used the dreaded April 15 — the U.S. deadline to file income taxes — as a hook to vent about government spending and corporate bailouts in an homage to the Boston Tea Party.

The tea parties were promoted by FreedomWorks, a conservative nonprofit advocacy group based in Washington and led by former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas, who is now a lobbyist.

Organizers said the movement developed organically through online social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and through exposure on Fox News and promotion from conservative pundits and bloggers.

While FreedomWorks insisted the rallies were nonpartisan, they have been seized on by many prominent Republicans who view them as a promising way for the party to reclaim its momentum against President Barack Obama's administration and other Democrats.

"All you have to be is a mildly awake Republican candidate for office to get in front of that parade," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

Some Republicans considering 2012 presidential bids and others with upcoming campaigns for state and congressional offices hitched a ride with the movement.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took the podium in front of New York's City Hall while the crowd of about 2,000 chanted, "We are America!"

He urged people to tell their lawmakers to vote against big spending or else "we're going to fire you."

As the former House speaker left after his 11-minute speech, passers-by yelled, "2012, Newt!" and "Run for president!" But when asked about a run, Gingrich shook his head emphatically and said, "I'm just part of a citizen movement."

Another possible candidate, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, sent an e-mail to his supporters, letting them know about tea parties throughout the state. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford attended two tea parties.

"This is critically important, what you're doing," Kansas Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, a likely candidate for governor in 2010, told the crowd in Topeka. "You've got to keep it up."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, facing re-election next year, told protesters in Austin that officials in Washington have abandoned the country's founding principles of limited government. He recently rejected $550 million in federal economic stimulus money slated to help Texas' unemployment trust fund.

While the political implications of the rallies remain to be seen as Obama's administration pursues its economic recovery plan, thousands of protesters turned out in loud and colorful ways to express their frustration with Obama and Washington in general.

Indianapolis small business owners Ben and Bree Finegan brought their two children to a local rally. Two-year-old Kate held a sign from her stroller reading, "In diapers & in debt."

The crowd in Carson City, Nev., included a 5-year-old boy holding a sign that read, "My share of the national debt is $36,500." Some wore cowboy hats with tea bags dangling from them.

In Boston, a few hundred protesters gathered on the Boston Common, a short distance from the original Tea Party in 1773. Some dressed in Revolutionary garb and carried signs that said "Barney Frank, Bernie Madoff: And the Difference Is?" and "D.C.: District of Communism."

In Atlanta, thousands of people gathered outside the Capitol, where Fox News Channel conservative pundit Sean Hannity broadcast his show Wednesday night. One protester's sign read: "Hey Obama you can keep the change."

Julie Reeves, of Covington, Ga., brought her Chihuahua, Arnie, who wore a tiny anti-IRS T-shirt. "I want the government to get its hand the hell out of my wallet," Reeves said.

Duncan Philp, of Carpenter, Wyo., carried a flag in Cheyenne reading "Don't Tread on Me" and dragged a United Nations flag on the ground. Philp said he's a member of the Wyoming Tyranny Response Team, a group dedicated to the Bill of Rights.

He said Congress ignored Americans' request not to bail out financially troubled banks.

"Bush and Obama have done the same thing," Philp said. "They've given out loans for money they don't have."

In Helena, Mont., protesters stomped on boxes labeled to represent various taxes, such as income and a proposal to tax carbon dioxide output.

"It's a stepping stone to one day being able to tax you for the very air that you breathe," said event organizer Jim Walker.

There were several small counter-protests, including one that drew about a dozen people at Fountain Square in Cincinnati. A counter-protester held a sign that read, "Where were you when Bush was spending billions a month 'liberating' Iraq?" The anti-tax demonstration there, meanwhile, drew about 4,000 people.

Some Democrats said the Tax Day rallies offered little substance.

"The Republicans are going to have to do more than their standard rhetoric about taxes in order to be successful. They need some new ideas," said Brian Schatz, chairman of the Hawaii Democratic Party. "It's a tired old line of attack."

Really!

I think the whole bailout is a big mess, and a lot of our money is being wasted on corrupt corporations, but this robbery of our taxes has been going on for years. I'm glad people are finally getting interested, and making a stand, but they shouldn't be laying all the blame on Democrats.

Umm... Obama has spent more money in his fisrt 100 days than ALL OTHER US PRESIDENTS COMBINED!

The Iraq war is peanuts compared to this madness.

We're not blaming a democrat, we're blaming a MARXIST.

I don't think the IRS really cares what political party you belong to, unless of course you're nominated to Obama's cabinet, then they overlook the fact that you don't pay your taxes.

Would the Republicans have done anything different? They were pumping money into the economy like it was growing on trees during the last months of Bush's stint.

They presented several other options.

Mainly the obvious: Lower taxes and cut spending... duh.

BTW, the last two years of Bush's administration we had a democratic Congress. Hey, that's about when all these problems started, wasn't it?

No, that's when the chickens came home to roost. The problem with the banks and hedge funds hasn't been resolved, those guys are generally smarter than politicians and know how to hoodwink them. My boyfriend works in futures and they're still raking the money in, he just laughs at the TV when he hears politicians in the UK and US droning on about the banks.

Well I started the teabag PHAIL thread, obviously it did not have much popularity a couple weeks ago.

I think this teabag thing is just sore losers that are sad fox news watching idiots that have no clue about anything. As I can see, this thread it seems like a lot of you guys are doing the US vs THEM thing... whatever

IMO - You guys are not even close to the true reason this has all happened, and Im sure you Red State guys will never admit capitalism is flawed as an idea, not to mention in practice.

The American dream of becoming wealthy is at the core of this shit, but you will never admit to that because you all think that maybe one day you will be wealthy and piss on the poor, even if your poor now. That will never make any sense to me at all. Your tax system is already way less then almost every other G20 nation. Flame me all you want. But Obama did not do this, and it was not Bush either. This is what will happen to a capitalist system every time its tried. That is why most nations use a mix of capitalism and socialism. Blaming democrats to force banks to give bad loans? Woah, Baraka you are smarter then that dude, you think that one party was able to force banks to do something that would lead the the failure of a bank. You have got to be kidding me. At the core of all of this is always greedy fat white dudes who want to be even more wealthy.

I give up though, anyone who does not think the tea bag party is a complete fail is an idiot to me. As I am an idiot to them.... But the truth is and has always been clear. Capitalism is phail and always will be.

Those who chase wealth will never think of the long term only their short term wealth, thats why this happend to American Banks. No other banks in the entire world had this happen. Regulation keeps it from happening, because someone is smart enough to say, "Thats not a good idea, you might make some short term money but the whole house of cards will crumble if you do shit like that"

FUCK
I am a turd. Do not emulate me, or Omphalos shall mock you as well.

its a 40 year old problem that has been building and has ballooned to this point.

things have been neglected and spiraling out of control since the nixon administration.

Military, healthcare, power grid, banking system, social security, food supply, wellfare, roads, bridges, education, trade, jobs, crime, immigration, energy? pick which barrel to put the bullet into and spin to blow the brains out of the countries financial revenue!!

funny thing is we elected these boobs... representatives up thru to the president.. so we are responsible for our own mess arnt we? lethargic majority letting special interests....corporations... and small groups run things.

Its hard to look in the mirror and see the truth...it hurts and I feel it just as bad as every American, rich, poor, or otherwise. America has grown FAT and LAZY and GREEDY and needs a few things to recover.

EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS CAN BE FIXED!! and in a shorter time frame than the boobs in washington think.

We have no major economic engine anymore....the old ones are dying a slow death (Manufacturing)....the US economy has moved to a service base instead of a production base...that is a big part of the problem.

The number one problem in america that is at the foundation of everthing we do is ENERGY.. it makes the lightbulbs go, it gets us to work to produce widgets and delivers those to market to be sold. The cost of energy has skyrocketed... building plants to make... maintaining the old ones that produce... and the cost of burning it for use.

Everyone from me, you, up thru and including the current president have given lip service to energy independence for the past 30 years... and there isnt an organized concerted effort to make that change.

The stock market cant run if the lights and computers arent on because there is no energy right?? our military cant go bomb the crap out of other countries and continue the persuit of imperialism with no fuel can they? The evil media monstor cant report things if there is no power for televisions and radio, and newspapers can they? think about it!!

To start, we the people, have to get the truth, uneditied, balls ass truth about our system. The crap that is spewed from media about energy is bullshit and nothing more. I have a few things to say about my personal beliefs first so you dont put me into some pigeon hole.

I am not a green type.......
I am not democrat or republican....
I am not a socialist...
I am non denominational .....
I dont care if you drive an escalade or a geo metro....
I dont care if you have a 2 room shack or a 50 million dollar mansion....
I believe in mother earth, gia, and she is here for us, to use, but not abuse
I believe this is the greatest country to ever evolve on this planet....
I believe this is the greatest place to live on the planet...
I believe in the american dream....
I will fight and die for it to the bitter end.....

I am an American... who believes in the corp values of this country(conservative) and believes that we should lead by example not by lips and assholes. I believe in WE THE PEOPLE.. The Constitution (greatest governing document every created), and to LIFE, LIBERTY, and the Pursuit of HAPPINESS!!!!

I believe that we are in a defining time for our country, and things have just about balloned to the point we need to get off our ass's, reach up and grab this thing by the neck and choke it back down to our control, and make it go back to giving us those things we wish for.

Leading me back to energy...you cant build a house without good foundations right? our foundations are eroded and we have overgrown them and they need mudjacking and rebuilding. Energy... we have have the technology TODAY.. to end this problem once and for all..TODAY!!

solar, wind, Tidal, geothermal, coal, hydrogen, biofuels, natural gas, oil (old domestic and new production) Oil shale.

Disclaimer*****I didnt add nuclear, although we have it, it is the scariest fucking thing on the planet to me... Radioactive waste is like forever... dont want any part of that cup of tea, if you do fine, I will go with the majority vote.. but keep the shit safe!!! and the frak away from me!!!!!*****

let trillion dollar obama man at this problem....TODAY we have the technologies to make the above list work in unison that we can over and out produce any country on the planet... package, box, airlift... show and sell to any other country on the planet. We can make 15 times more product than we consume. The balance of the list is about 50/50 on limited to renuable... and gives the future generations the time they need to work technology to make more efficent methods than we have for current and develop the systems that will be completely renuable in the future(fuel cells, fusion, etc)

Only when we the people decide this will this happen. revenues going to stablize the system for the short term (5-10 years) is fine.. but a CENTRALIZED... WE THE PEOPLE.. UNCORRUPTED.. WORKIGN FOR AMERICA AND COMMON GOOD OF ALL... effort to fix this what is needed, now, today. In my opinion, ENERGY is a NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE!!! ENERGY SHOULD BE A NATIONALIZED INDUSTRY. This nationalization is not the government taking control... its the central point to act thru. Coordination with the current industryies... setting standards, planning, organization, quality assurance and above all else FRAKKING EXECUTION!!!

It can be planned and executed in a very short time, systems modified, created and delivered. All we have to do is acknowledge it, tell the special interest to go fuck themselves and move forward. A national plan to go independent will employ millions, produce huge revenue, pay our debts, solidify the foundations of AMERICA for the next 200 years..

my relation of this idea to the topic is this? I would protest taxes as well and agree. Money is being wasted and needs to be redirected. We dont need more taxes the governments (local, state, federal) have more than enough to run things. WE THE PEOPLE, need to come together and tell them that we are done with this crap, this is what we want.. and do it, or we will elect those that will.

Until the truth of information is for all eyes to see, we will continue to be lead by the nose to what ever the fates have in store for us. I know im along for the ride either way, and will do my part in whatever direction we head.

We're all to blame, not just one political party for one thing. These TEA parties are only the start, I've warned y'all before, there's a revolution coming. It is extremely unusual for that many people to show up for a government protest in the USA.

The USA is a land of equal OPPORTUNITY, not equal results. Everyone dreams of being rich but if they also dream of pissing on the poor they're sick.

Personally, I'd just like to have enough to live comfortably and not worry too much about the future.

Whether it works or not is MOOT.

It's one of the principles the country was founded on. It's the corruption and delays in the system, not the system itself, that is the problem.

Humans will always be the weak point in any system.

I think Humans will always be the MAIN problem, but I think the system itself plays one heck of a part. We have Humans everywhere and not the same problems everywhere, so obviously different systems do work better or worse than other systems (in certain situations at certain times). I'm with FH on this, anyone who thinks their system is good enough is wrong, the systems will never be perfect and need to be constantly revised.

agreed. we're fallen creatures and will bring failure into any system we create. unfortunately too many people continue to believe that this will somehow change of our own sheer will and a bit of elbow grease....
Fallen eh? Me-thinks you've missinterpreted genesis there!

Of course not.
