Oh, there's no question I still love Gibson's movies. Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, Braveheart...love those films. As a film geek, if you can't separate the performance from the person, you're not going to enjoy much film. There's too many Mel Gibson's and Roman Polanski's in the world of film that if you morally objected to watching their film, you'd disown half the film ever made. And the other half requires you to tolerate the braindead political agendas of people like Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Like I always say, art would be so much more enjoyable if one didn't have to tolerate artists

You hit the nail on the head, there. Vietnam means nothing to most people outside the US, you can't expect people who haven't shared your experiences or who come from different cultures to be moved by the same things as you. The film just seems like self-indulgent American navel-gazing.
