Great Depression 2009

: Starbucks Eliminates Coffee, Cups, Stir-thingies
: Latest Cost-cutting Measures

In its latest cost-cutting moves designed to improve its bottom line, Starbucks announced today that it would no longer offer coffee, cups, or stir-thingies beginning February 1.

In an official statement, company spokesman Carol Foyler said that Starbucks "wrestled long and hard" with the decision to eliminate the three items, "especially coffee."

"We are aware that many of our customers have come to Starbucks in the past looking for a cup of coffee," Ms. Foyler said. "We hope, however, that they will continue to come even though we no longer offer coffee or cups, for that matter."

She said that she did not think that Starbucks customers would be disappointed by the absence of stir-thingies, adding, "Since we're also eliminating sugar, Equal, and half-and-half, there's really nothing to stir."

When asked what Starbucks hoped would attract customers to their stores in the future, Ms. Foyler said, "We hope customers will see our stores as a place for the unemployed and/or homeless to come out of the cold and warm themselves over a scalding hot cup of water, as long as they bring the cup."

Elsewhere, House Minority Leader John Boehner explained House Republicans' opposition to President Obama's economic stimulus package: "We're ginormous assholes."

That'd be funny if it actually was a stimulus package.

I'll stimulate your package!

Umm seriously though... Looks like the US is gonna get a lot worse before it gets any better. Canadian economic forecasts are slightly more positive, but we're still looking at massive job losses.

I think this crisis is an opportunity for us to learn as a society. As you all probably know, I'll gladly watch the big three automakers crash and burn, along with all the consequences, even when it trickles down to me. I think it's more important for us to get smart about sustainability on the whole (that includes cleaner cars, renewable fuels, among many other things) than to continue our wasteful Wal-Mart existences. The automakers failed because consumers couldn't handle the greed of the oil companies, and because many are beginning to develop an ecological conscience. Let them fail like any other company and let economic Darwinism take its course. The companies that the consumers choose to support, rather than being forced to accept, will prosper. As a result, in a few years when the economy has improved somewhat, it will be more streamlined and sustainable due to the abolishment of old and dated dogma.

I mean, think about it... The most successful and widely-used inventions have all bee re-invented in some way. Telephones became cell-phones, televisions have gone from tubes to plasma and now to organic light-emitting molecules (not to mention cable to digital cable to Satellite, as well as the fact that all the networks now put full content on the internet). The car is still stuck about 100 years back, and it's time to update it to a smarter format. The depression will be rough, but we'll come out smarter.

Or we'll come out dead due to World War 3, as everyone desperately fights for limited resources. Hey, it took a war to end the last great depression, so it could happen again.

Giving Congress a trillion dollars to spend when they can't even account for the last $350B is just ludichrist. Spending money is not how you get out of debt. This guy is going to give away the whole damned store. And a cocktail reception after locking the republicans out of the bill writing process is bipartisanship? Just like he isn't going to hire lobbyists for his cabinet... yeah, right. My kids already owe $500,000 in taxes, an your American Idol President is going to spend a trillion dollars every year, just watch. Tax rebates to people who don't pay taxes is welfare, that doesn't stimulate anything. $20M for new sod on the DC mall? This is nothing but PORK.

If we're lucky, WWIII will be the only thing that saves us.

Obama put quite a bit in the bill just so he could get republican support and they turned around and gave him a goose egg.

The dems wanted more infrustucture all along and now they might just tell the conservatives to take a hike and do it anyway.

And believe it or not, but that sod will create new jobs. I agree it seems a little out of place but that is part of infrustucture.

And it is the Republicans who can't account for the first 350 billion, not the Democrats. Again, these systems fail because we keep electing people who don't support them. Why are our public schools failing? Because for some reason we need to give them more competition....whatever the hell that means.

Such as?
The dems wanted more infrustucture all along and now they might just tell the conservatives to take a hike and do it anyway.
That's the problem.

It is still borrowed money that our we and even children will have to pay back. To put it into perspective, $825 billion is worth approximately $10,520 for each family in the United States, or $22,445 for each family with children under the age of 18.
And it is the Republicans who can't account for the first 350 billion, not the Democrats. Again, these systems fail because we keep electing people who don't support them. Why are our public schools failing? Because for some reason we need to give them more competition....whatever the hell that means.
I didn't accuse either party, I said Congress. Imagine how it would stimulate the economy if we gave that money to those American families. Better yet, instead of creating higher taxes for families by increasing government spending, making permanent the 2001 and 2003 tax reductions and lower individual, small business, and corporate taxes.

The best ways to stimulate an economy are foodstamps and infrastucture.

Obama put in the tax cuts and cut out many of these programs to get the Republicans on board. Now he might just say no thanks....which is good for everyone.

Just for fun, where did I post this, Freak ?

and not the onion :
http://www.borowitzreport.com/

the onion's stuff is always a little more off-the-wall,
this guy's just kinda mildly amusing - it caught my
attention because I had heard about Starbucks cutting
7,000 jobs - and wondered if that would effect the
brand new one in my LittleBigTown - not that I'm a fan
of the place, but that could be local jobs, and hell, they
literally just built the place.

That's a great search filter :)

The problem was the coffee trend has been failing for years. I'm sure the latest downward spiral in the economy isn't helping Starbucks, but they've been in trouble for a long time now. Nonetheless, a good laugh :)

It's only a tax cut if the person recieving it pays taxes, which the people who will get it don't.

Like the ultra rich under Bush ?

Freak don't forget the trillions that the Pentagon (not the military) cannot account for over the years, that's another money pit right there. Also the reason the 350 billion cannot be accounted for is because the Bush Administration refused to allow over sight saying trust us. Congress isn't all that great but the Bush administration set new highs for incompetence on all kinds of fronts. Republicans like to say government needs ot be run like a business, well the last eight years it was and now the government is in the same position as much as Wall Street. The last eight years has seen the US engage in corporate socialism to the extreme, according to the government itself (the General Accounting Office), the Bush tax plan handed over 3 trillion dollars MORE to corporations and the top 5% of citizens than they put into the system. In free money. Corporate welfare costs this country more than the regular welfare system (which I dislike it needs ot be revised) but conservatives turn a blind eye to it. They are robbing the country pure and simple.

I hope those assholes at starbucks crash and burn. What kind of loosers claim they sell fair trade coffee, when in fact only one out of every so many beans is in fact fair trade? :? It's the lying that pisses me off, don't pretend to be righteous and then find some backdoor way to sneakily make money. Fuckers can burn.
