these valuation estimate calculators are often off by entire orders of magnitude so I wouldn't necessarily take them too seriously.

my guess is that if the domain is allowed to age more, is registered at least 5-10 years into the future, and the site does a bit more search engine optimization (more inbound links and off-site mentions would help, so would posting actual promotions/ads to the sites of members and so forth).....this domain could be worth substantially more than that, but without established history of ad revenues and plenty of traffic verification (Google Webmaster tracking stats etc) you might not be able to get that much for it if you were just looking for a quick and easy sale.

of course I hope that the site stays under its current ownership for the foreseeable future, but speaking strictly in terms of clarifying what these automatic domain value calculators spit out.

If this is to be believed,

then Byron's site is worth ten times ours.

Exactly - Just because every news site/blogger who does a piece on something Dune related feels they should link back to the corporate Dune site, doesn't make it any good.

Content is king. :) We win.

I ain't never pleased ... bout nuthin ...

altho, I read all this after getting home from a living history event less than 50 miles from my house, and it might as well've been 500

I also read this before reading the thread at T(A)U, which made more sense to me ...

and I re-read some of the bullshit about "google page ranks" and a bunch of new bullshit ... I just don't trust these "SEO" fuckers -
I don't know if they have anymore idea about what to do than Otis ... and I'm still unclear on how links to a site in a forum
will affect ranks - WTF does "quality links" mean, and is we one ? I'd think that the googlebots would really ignore (or score very,
very low) links from inside some jackleg's ranting post on a non-commercial message board, as opposed to links built-in to a webpage ...

f'instance, if I log onto http://www.thatnegrointhewhitehouseisamartianmuslim.myfreemessageboards.ru.info
and post a link to an article buried deep in the foxnews site,
( http://www.foxnews.com/index/politics/wingnuts/posting.php?mode=shitheels=search&negro =3564823/glenbecksaysthatnegrointhewhitehouseisacommunistsleeperagent)
does that carry the same google-weight as a link to the HOMEPAGE (foxnews.com) on the frontpage sidebar of the New York Times ?

I am not convinced that links to Merrit's Hole from inside public posts here has any effect at all, cumulative or otherwise, on google ranking;
I believe that one link built in to SyFy sidebar would outweigh all of ours ...

and the "value" of this site is determined by a formula of traffic, clicks to other pages within the site (as opposed to one click & gone),
and so one, divided by google ad-rates ...

however - I also think that there is no legitimate reason to link to anything in Merrit's Hole - not because of this pagerank horseshit,
but because there are still people IP blocked or just not fucking loading up the Official Corporate Dune Forum for any reason, or just
not going to fuck around and wait for that bloated piece of crapware to load up -

so I've always suggested re-posting whatever it is Over There you think is important enough to share in toto, here ...
this also prevents Merrit from erasing whatever it is from the internet ...

also, that board is so small & irrelevant, it really doesn't make any difference if ALL it's traffic is OH sockpuppets jacking each other off ...
in the larger scheme of things, the tiny little number of eyes on that board is less than irrelevant ... & the same thing can be said about this board ...

yeah, no reason to link there
...this also prevents Merrit from erasing whatever it is from the internet ...
that's a good reason to paste things here

"I mean, say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, but at least it's an ethos." Yeah, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. It's all especially masturbatory because there's really nothing going on over there.
