I looked for an appropriate topic to post this, but the closest thing was the funeral plain that started for Sloey. I feel that this is important enought to merit it's own topic, because this is our second OH holiday. (pending approval) Today is the twenty-fourth anniversary of Frank Herbert's death from pancreatic cancer. He died at the age of 65, but was still cut down short. I cannot help but wonder that given the quarter of a century's worth of medical advancements he might have been able to survive even to the 90 years he would have reached this October. Though he died when I was 5 years old, and I'm sure I never met him; I miss him.

I was a friend of Frank. Frank taught me that a good book can be better than a good friend, and that fear is the mind killer. I must NOT fear.

I was a Friend of Frank.
From Him, I learned to think beyond the Words written on a Page.
From Him, I learned the true importance of Literature in Society, as an Agent for Change and a Vehicle for Ideas.
When my Mind was trapped in the Box Canyon of Convention and Tradition, Frank lifted me up to Safety and a different level of Critical Analysis.
May His Water nourish the Tribe forever.

he taught me that creation is a tough process but that when you love what you do you will stop to nothing to master your craft.

He brought to light the beauty of human potential and the wonder of when it is realized and exercised to the fullest.
He made me love the concept of the purity of Deserts, literal and figurative.
He gave me the deepest love of literature and writing.

I was a friend of Frank. He taught me to think for myself and not blindly follow charismatic leaders.

I was a friend of Frank, he taught me that excellence can and should be found in all things; why would we settle for mediocrity when our dreams are so big and beautiful.

I was a friend of Frank. He taught me that even when you see things going your way, you continue to fight for what you believe in.

I was a friend of Frank and he taught me their are plans within plans within plans and that the spice must flow...

I was a friend of Frank. He taught me not to thoughtlessly follow the actions of others...

I was a friend of Frank – he taught me, that letting the blind lead the deaf, will be the downfall of men.

I was a friend of Frank. Because of his writing i became a different person, no longer a scared kid that lived life by what others said.
He taught me that every man is a fool if he doesn't give his all to what he does.
He tought me about facing the unknowns in our universe.
He tought me to worship life "we are all in this beauty together".
He tought me how to think for myself.
He tought me more than all the years i had previously spent in school.
I am where i am now, thanks to him.
He was a terrific human being.

I was a freind of Frank, he tought me to slow down and read every word, that novels can be about more than the story and the characters, their worrth can be hiddin in the words themselves.

He taught me of the infinite majesty and potential of humankind, and that there are no ends or beginnings, only sections of an infinite tapestry that blend smoothly into each other.

He showed me that to seek out ideas that challenge what you know will teach you more than searching out ideas that you already agree with.

Speaking of friends of Frank ...

I was in Frank's one-time home town of Port Townsend a couple months ago for the memorial service for Joe Wheeler, a truly great advocate for the arts whose organization Centrum brought in so many artists to workshops to develop young talent, including Frank Herbert at some great writing workshops way back when.

At the reception after some moving testimonials to Joe (and some great chamber music and jazz from musicians paying tribute to Joe's love of music), I ran into Bill Ransom, who co-authored 'The Jesus Incident', 'The Lazarus Effect' and 'The Ascension Factor' (sequels to Destination: Void) with Frank. Bill looked to be having some major trouble with one foot, up in a cast and keeping him in a wheelchair, but he's still writing poetry and lecturing locally and it was great to see him. Of course our few exchanged words were about Joe, but now that I've discovered this site I am kind of curious to ask him what he thinks about the KJA/BH approach to Frank's universe. I suspect he is much too nice of a person to say anything against one of Frank's kids, but you never know.

I can't tell you how much I envy you knowing Ransom, the books he wrote with FH are my favourites other than Dune, and in some ways I preferred them over Dune (I think the prose was better with Ransom involved). I've said a few times that I think he should have been the person to write Dune 7.

I think you're right.
Frank supposedly said he never missed his daily coffee with Ransom.
I would really like to hear from Ransom more about Frank the writer (and philosopher).

Someone should ask for an interview; tell him they want to interview him about his experiences with Herbert.
