It's an early one. Pretty good IMHO.

and theyd have us believe the present was never anticipated...

the writing is different
seems it took along time to get his early work published in one printing
typical of the era hes probably one of the guys who made it to novels faster than most?

I recently picked up "Eye", a collection of short stories by Frank Herbert. "Dragon in the Sea" is included. I'm guessing "Under Pressure" is longer? "Dragon in the Sea" ends abruptly, seems like a beginning without an end.

Distrans is right on this, I think. I believe it was serialized first then published as a novel, there probably was some additional editing at that point too.

Yep, that's right. I think later printings of Eye may have had the whole work though.
Herbert's written style in Under Pressure was an affectation. He was trying to add to the tension by being a bit frenetic. Pretty sure that Harlan Ellison wrote a review of Under Pressure that spent some time on this issue.

I really enjoyed that book, actually. I would rate it higher than any in the Pandora series other than D:V.
