Frank Herbert's Cease Fire - short film

Hello!

I just wanted to tell people here about a new short film in production right now, adapted faithfully from the short story, Cease Fire -

As this is a student project, we have a very modest wordpress site up at the moment, which has a teaser and various information about the project itself - principal photography will be finished in January, and we're aiming to have all post-production finished by May.

Critique on the wordpress and the teaser are welcome - thanks for checking it out!

EDIT:

Not sure how many questions it will answer, but I put up a new post on the wordpress site regarding how this all worked out, for anyone who may be interested:

Edit: Never mind the earlier versions of my comment. I see you have "Text from 'Cease Fire' used by permission of Herbert Properties, LLC" on your blog.

So... what's it like being in bed with the Devil?

Yeah, KJAland. And they've obviously received the blessing of the Herbert Parasites.

So why is this film OK but the Spanish Dune film wasn't? What's the difference between a fan production and a student project, in the minds of The Milkers?

I for one would like to know a little bit more about the behind-the-scenes before considering this anything but spam.

The HLP obviously had an attorney who told them that intellectual property cannot be protected in the future unless you move to protect it when someone uses it without permission. Technically they are right, but still, literary estates should treat fans with respect.

With this one I would not be surprised if some money changed hands. The HLP probably thought that they would never do anything with this little story, so why not sell the student the rights? With Dune, it's a different story altogether. No amount of money would be worth it. But even if they did pay for the rights; spam? I personally am grokking a student film vibe here. I wish this guy luck.

Paid for the rights? For a student film? Really? Why?

Every cent that goes to the HLP is blood-money

*I'm assuming Jacob is posting all the promo material*
Jacob, in a YouTube Comment wrote: Only one more week to check this out, then it comes down - tell your friends about it while it's still up!

so I snatched it w/ freecorder4, just in case ...
(that's the "packrat" or "hoarder" in me ... but fuck, live thru the Depression, and you learn to hang on to everything ....)

on the blahg, there's this in the sidebar & @ the bottom:
Text from "Cease Fire" used by permission of Herbert Properties, LLC.
and the blahg entry from yesterday:
Big day!
So, today has been an eventful day, to say the least…the contract that states that we are approved to go ahead with this project came through, which means that this project is completely legitimate, as opposed to the “almost but not quite” legitimate it was just before. This opens a lot of doors for this project, and gives us as filmmakers a chance to really reach a huge audience.
As far as actual mail goes, I received my WGA certificate for registering Frank Herbert’s Cease Fire some months ago, and also received the official permit contract from Denver Water regarding Dillon Reservoir, which is going to be a key location in this film.
Really, the contract showing up has me completely rejuvenated, even after the draining activities of the last three weeks.
Thanks to all of you for your support, and keep an eye on this site…
I have a comment "awaiting moderation":
I, the SandRider wrote: jacob, thanks for dropping by the sietch
and leaving us the links for your project ...

I'm cautiously optimistic; I certainly approve
of your source material ...

the "contract" that you mention in this post,
is that a contract with the HLP ? I'd like to
hear about your dealings with them, I'm
assuming one of the lawyers, and not Brian;
we'd be interested in hearing the details ...
you are welcome to post about it in the thread
you started @jacurutu, or, if you do not wish
to make your comments that public, please send
one of us an email or PM ... we have a "Cone
of Silence" set up for just such a thing ...

the point of interest in this would be :

the SandRider
sandrider@jacurutu.com
http://www.jacurutu.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and somebody (maybe the DuneFish ?) should drop by and tell him to lose the cheesy, dated "SciFi" fonts ...
or, if you're reading this, Jacob, drop the cheesy, dated "SciFi" fonts ....

wait & watch, I guess ...

Good luck!

I think it is wonderful that people are looking into the shorter works of Frank Herbert - I am looking forward to see if you can pull it off and handle the rather straightforward plot and theme with some of the original's elegance. Again, best of luck and do post again when it is done!

With regards to the HLP, deals, etc. then I do agree that they have long lost their ethical claim to speak for mr. Herbert or his work - but as long as they have the legal claim, I guess nothing can be done about it. That no one should ever attempt to adapt any work of Frank's would just be too big a cost to pay, in order to keep money out of their hands. I hope you are free from any restraints and can use the book as you wish - it will be interesting to see!

It would be total insanity for someone to sue a student film, but I guess I wouldn't put anything past the HLP. It seems like this is might be a little bit more than just a student project, intended for festivals, I guess? Don't forget to try to make the actual film itself good. too.

Had a look at their Twatter page to see if there was more information (like, what contracts are involved?) and they're following both TheKJA and DuneNovels. If they're just paying lip-service to get their project done, that's one thing...

If they're Friends of Kevin & BoBo... Well, you don't get in bed with those kafir fucks and come out right again. Ever.

10,000 percent agreement.

I make no exceptions to the following rule: never give a penny to the Herbert Living Parasites. EVER.

I'll go so far as to condone stealing. And I'm a law-and-order type of guy.

(I suppose there's no Mac version of that software, right? )

Well, they were back through about five hours ago or so but didn't respond or comment further.

I personally would prefer that Jacurutu NOT be used as a billboard for easy drop-by advertising, no matter what the subject is. I mean, if they're not going to even try to interact, the only difference between them and the Viagra & farmporn-site spammers is that they're pushing something somewhat "relevant to our interests". (Well, OK, I'm speaking for myself with regard to the Viagra. :P )

FWIW.

(They haven't hit FED2k yet, it appears.)

I have yet to have to worry about it. ;)

Speaking of film-stuff and FED2k: Harry Canyon has finally shown up. And guess what?! He's playing his greatest hits over there, too.

Verbatim.
