Ranking FH's Other Books

Hi all, just stumbled upon this forum today.

Anyway, I've had enough of those Dune spin-offs (that's a whole 'nother thread), and I'm trying to scratch that itch with F.H.'s non-Dune material. I've read the Dosadi Experiment and Santaroga Barrier and enjoyed both. Reading Destination : Void now and I'll be honest, I'm finding it a little too - clinical and technical. There's a great used book store near me that has them all, but now that I'm slogging through D:V I find myself wondering if I'm not missing out by grabbing something else instead.

I'm wondering from you folks what you'd consider his Top 5 non-Dune books. I'm not looking for a hard ranking per se, just a sense of what you think I should seek out next that I haven't already.

Any help is appreciated. My apologies if you covered this in another thread, I couldn't see anything similar.

There is a lot of technobable but the ending makes it all worthwhile.

I don't necessarily mind technobabble, but it is very heavy in this book, and a lot of it is dated (references to analog technology and relays and whatnot - I'm willing to accept it's a product of it's era, but it can detract at points). I'm sticking with it, but I keep wondering if I'm not missing out on something better from him.

BTW nice av.

Don't worry, there's going to be a new edition in a few years with all the technobabble updated and the gaps filled in.

It will be called Destination: UltraVoid. ;)

Welcome.

The top 5 non Dune books:

First 3 would be the "sequels" to D:V (really far removed from D:V's style, and have Bill Ransom as a coauthor, in fact the last book was written mostly by Bill after FH died).

Then the 2 ConSentiency books, Whipping Star and Dosadi Experiment.

Destination: Void
The Jesus Incident
The Dragon in the Sea

Not ranked or anything...

Relays are still heavily used today... just not in computers. Keep in mind, they were building from scratch with what was available.

Is it me or are most of the cover images stretched vertically? The first one and the last few look OK.

Whoa.

That's what they would look like if you were viewing them in close orbit around a black hole. :P

MSIE screws up all other things, especially fonts and CSS pages.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have to admit, the lazy part of me was wishing for consensus ("yes, this is our officially sanctioned Top 5"), but I appreciate the fact that none of you listed the same 5 even more, since it tells me you guys are more critical and not just a hive-mind.

BTW everything looks fine in Netscape Navigator.
j/k

I can not see what I do not want to see. I can not see what I do not want to see. I can not see what I do not want to see. I can not see what I do not want to see. I can not see what I do not want to see. I can not see what I do not want to see.

I did however see you're cover thumbnails, teeny small but correctly formed, Opera 10.53.
