Definitely read D:V first.

I'd recommend starting with Whipping Star or Dragon in the Sea first, actually. Those books are more accessible than D:V, IMHO.

I'd do D:V first if that's the series you want to jump into next, I read that one last and kinda regretted it (ruins the ending).

I'm with Omph though, I'd go for Whipping Star and then Dosadi Experiment.

Maybe I should go with Whipping Star first because it was written before Dosadi Experiment and they're both set in the same universe...

Yes, that is what I meant to convey. I read them in reverse, don't think it did any harm, but it did spoil a big surprise in WS.

id say probably white plague, with jesus incident and hellstroms hive being very close second and thirds

white plague was another fantastic example of how franks mind worked
hes able to create these scenarios that are on the outside so outlandish, but then seeing through the eyes of the characters hes able to make you sit down and think, well holy fuck what would i do if i were in their shoes? and he does such a good job blurring the lines between "good" and "bad" guys

My fav next to Dune is Whipping Star. Very original, smart & entertaining. The communication with the Caleban entity is top notch imagination when it comes to alien interaction.

The other one in the same universe, Dosadi Experiment, is quite good too.

Dosadi Experiment is my next favorite non-Dune Herbert book. I also read it before Whipping Star, and it would probably be better to read them in order.

Soul Catcher was really enjoyable, but different.

I have only read two non-Dunes by FH, the Dosadi Experiment (only the first one), and Soul Catcher, the latter of the two being my favorite.
If you guys are ever feeling like toning down the sci-fi, I highly recommend Soul Catcher. Its written like Dune, got all the twists and even a few core themes of Dune, yet is not sci-fi at all. Its been almost two years since I've read it, but from what I remember, that book was fucking incredible. All FH fans really should read that one.

I liked Soul Catcher too. And the White Plague, which was not really SF either.

White plague has been a favourite ever since I read it in a Dutch translation. After I got the English one it rose to third place on my FH list ( after Dune and The Jesus incident ). I was very happy a few months ago when I got myself a first edition hard back copy (for which I paid to much in hindsight).

I would have to say The White Plague. It inspired me to get a Biochemistry degree.

I own the White Plague, but never got around to finishing it. I stopped I think when they were introducing the committee of plague stoppers.
Perhaps I should read that instead of GEoD for the fourth time...

I'm glad to hear that about Soul Catcher. I have a copy waiting for when I finish Hyperion.

Don't read the last chapter.

I assume you mean of Hyperion. This is a re-read, so I already know about the painfully cheesy ending.

I loved the rest of the book but that ending made me groan.

It made me groan this time as well.

Fortunately Soul Catcher was awesome, and made up for it.

Destination Void is my favorite non Dune novel. Gets very deep into things people take for granted but you have to get past the old view of how computers work or how he thought they worked. Or maybe I don't understand how they work. Still not sure on eng multipliers. The Dosadi Experiment a close second. Have not read a lot of his other books though.

I am looking at the list of FH novels. I haven't read:
Hellstrom's Hive, The White Plague, Man of Two Worlds, The Ascension Factor

Which one should I read next? (assuming I can find it at the used bookstore, my choices may be limited)

It seems that The White Plague has some strong fans here.

I remember well and loved Destination: Void, but for a reason I can't remember (it's been a LONG time) I didn't rush to read The Ascension Factor after The Lazarus Effect. Actually, I remember a story but I can't remember the difference between it and the The Jesus Incident. I might have to re-read both of those first.
