Direct Descent

By itself, a lightweight compared to his other books, but I recommend reading this one after reading the first Foundation book by Asimov, which I just did. The book is listed as being published in 1980, but the original story was published in 1954...

I enjoyed it :) not a heavy-weight for sure, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Just picked up an almost pristine paperback copy of this book at HPB...I had never heard of it.

Direct Descent is YA. I have an illustrated paperback copy.

Hehe - interesting thought to contrast this with KJA's young adult crap.
Direct Descent is by no means a great book - but it does try to impart some lessons and thoughts to its target audience. I am not even going to get started on the comparison itself...

I kinda thought it was directed to a younger audience, since it has pictures. Still, I'll give it a read when I can.

Gotta finish The Difference Engine by Gibson first.

It's deliberately YA and yet is at least 5 times as adult as KJA's "adult" books....

Just finished it at my part time security job. Fast read... Moves along fairly well. Adult topics for sure (government, discipline, order, etc) IF intended for YA it would seem later teens at minimum.

Tech is a little suspect it seems, but the characters are enjoyable and scope of the story is interesting.

I know Dune is FH's legacy, and he devouted a lot of time to the series with Bill Ransom but always wondered why he didn't go deeper into sone of the other books.

The Conscentiency with Jorge had execellent possibilities. This direct descent presents all kinds of possibilities too.

Quick and enjoyable, give it a read. The illustrations are fun too.

I grabbed this at the used bookstore and it made for an easy enjoyable read - more like two short stories than a book really. I didn't know it was YA (with pictures!) but actually that turned out to be a plus since I haven't read a book in about 2 years. There's not too much to say about it really.

I considered picking up one the new Dune novels, but then I considered the prequels that I read, thought about it some more, and remembered "Dune 7 and 8," and I came to the conclusion that I don't need to read any more new Dune novels. I've experienced the UTLIMATE Kwisatz haderach. How can that be topped? Yeah, I know - Norma Cenva. Direct Descent was the right choice.

Reading new Dune kills brain cells.

In painfully large numbers.
