I was just wondering seeing as religion and its cause and effect are such big elements of dune, what everyone's religious inclination was. Also does anyone here know any Muslims who have read Dune (or are one) and if so what is their take on it?

I'm a sort of hopeful agnostic. I find Quakerism to be, intellectually, the most sound religion. I also find Taoism really interesting.

Do you believe Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I was the messiah/divine, vegetarianism and abstain from alcohol?

(If you want you could throw in white hate and African pride.)

This is actually an interesting question. My impression is that interest in science fiction in the Muslim cultures/countries still lags behind the rest of the world.

(Khalid Baheyeldin, who maintains that "Islamic/Arabic terminology in Dune" page, claims he has never actually read the books, for example.)

A Saudi I went to school with, Misfer Al Awar, was amazed to find arabic words in CoD, not so much that he'd want to read it.

Taoism isn't a religion its just a philosophical mindset. Taoist practices frequently get intertwined or occur alongside Chinese shamanism so it often gets confused for being a religion. Bruce Lee was a pretty firm atheist (self confessed and later confirmed by his wife Linda) yet he belived in Taoist thought, a lot of which is prevelent in Jeet Kun Do philosophy (empty cup).

That's actually a matter of some debate. I've read people who say that the idea Taoism is a philosophy and not a religion is a Western invention.
