Well I did say "they say". It's possible FH heard it and believed it, which wouldn't change the outcome: Dune is a work of fiction, so since prescience is (most likely) impossible anyways, the cause doesn't matter anyways.

The basic concept can still be used as an explanation, since various brain disorders do something similar... For example, autism literally rewires the brain so the various nerve-endings behave in different ways, causing those affected to have any variety of symptoms, including the oft-described-as-paranormal synaesthesia. Spice could do something similar.

I had a minor stroke a few years ago -
the only lasting effect is that I still smell apple blossoms
from time to time .... freaked me out for awhile until I
got used to it. When it happens now, I don't even
comment on it.

Bingo. A Half life is just that. The amount of time taken for the number of molecules of a substance to halve.

E.g. Half life of uranium - time taken for the radioactive Counts per minute to halve.

Half life of paracetamol in the body - several hours.
