The storm arrived just after daybreak. First there was the beady stretchedout
immobility of the desert dawn pressing dunes one into another. Next, the
advancing dust caused him to seal his face flaps. In the thickening dust the
desert became a dun picture without lines. Then sand needles began cutting his
cheeks, stinging his lids. He felt the coarse grit on his tongue and knew the
moment of decision had come. Should he risk the old stories by immobilizing the
almost exhausted worm? He took only a heartbeat to discard this choice, worked
his way back to the worm's tail, slacked off his hooks. Barely moving now, the
worm began to burrow. But the excesses of the creature's heat-transfer system
still churned up a cyclone oven behind him in the quickening storm. Fremen
children learned the dangers of this position near the worm's tail with their
earliest stories. Worms were oxygen factories; fire burned wildly in their
passage, fed by the lavish exhalations from the chemical adaptations to friction
within them.

Thank you.
Kevin J. Anderson is so stupid he thinks he invented The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen since he wrote the movie tie-in.

I'm pretty sure it violates the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics for a large animal to generate a net increase in energy from the friction caused by its own motion - which would have required energy. Stick to snorkling Frank!

So I've been wondering lately; Leto II claims his body creates all the spice he needs right? Why exactly do the worms eat the spice then? FH says they always come to a blow and are attracted to the spice, correct?

Is it just the force of the spice blow that attracts them? Are they conditioned to the presence of the crawlers? Does FH ever say whether or not its specifically the spice they are attracted to?

If they make all they need then whats the point? Or am I missing something here? (extremely likely)

This subject seems a bit convoluted.

They eat sand plankton and sandtrout. The explosion is what attracts them.

I was gonna say something about the moister content of Sandtrout, then I recalled their internal furnace.

The sandtrout are also loaded with spice essence, which masks the presence of moisture.

Mufasa would indeed be proud of that flow chart.. :D
