Chapter House or Chapterhouse?

Post by Hunchback Jack »

Stupid question, but it's hard to find a consistent answer.

The UK editions (Gollancz hardcover and NEL paperback) are called Chapter House Dune, and the planet is referred to as "Chapter House" in the text.

In Hunters (UK Hodder PB) it's consistently referred to as "Chapterhouse".

What do the US paperbacks say? Which do we think it is?

Actually both is acceptable.

In GEoD, Sisters refer to is as "Chapter House":

IN THE name of our Sacred Order and its unbroken Sisterhood, this accounting has
been judged reliable and worthy of entry into the Chronicles of the Chapter
House.

In the last two books, it's one word:

And always the hunters roamed out there, sweeping space for any clue to the
location of Chapterhouse.

I normally use "Chapterhouse".

I don't give a damn what it says in Hunters.

WP says
Chapterhouse Dune is a science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, last in his series of six Dune novels. Published in 1985, it is also known variously as Chapterhouse: Dune, Chapter House Dune and Chapter House: Dune.
And the cover shown with the article, of the US 1st edition, has "CHAPTERHOUSE: DUNE".

I'm not consistent, but I like that for the book title (abbrev: CH:D), Chapterhouse for the planet, and Chapter House for a BG center.

Which latter I believe is what is actually intended in that GEoD quote, based on the use of the definite article. ;)
