Orthodox Herbertarian Dune Encyclopedia

Post by Edric »

Along with the Timeline I've been working on a Dune Encyclopedia, it's in early development and very rough. Below I what I've come up with so far. I got the encyclopedia in a word.doc file if any wants a copy (It looks a lot better).

AGARVES, BUER.
(101?? A.G.—10217 A.G.)
A Fremen from Sietch Tabr and grandson of Stilgar's cousin. His date of birth is unknown as is his early life, it is unknown whether he was active during the 'Arrakis Revolt' and the following 'Fremen Jihad'.
Described as 'water fat', Agarves became an aide of Ziarenka Valefor chief of Alia's guardian amazons. One of Agarves first duties was to accompany Javid to Sietch Tabr during the early stages of the Fremen rebellion on Arrakis. Agarves was present when the ghola of Duncan Idaho, husband of Alia killed Javid and was then in turn killed by Stilgar.
Buer stood as witness as the women prepared the bodies for Huanui and was released from his bond of loyalty by Stilgar. It was Buer who brought the news to Alia that Javid and Idaho were dead and shortly after he secretly became her lover.
Alia promised Agarves that she would make him Naib of Sietch Tabr if he brought her Stilgar's head. Agarves lead a search-and-destroy force charged with finding Stilgar's band which included Irulan and Ghanima, however his duties and relationship with Alia meant he often returned to Arrakeen.
After making contact with friends at Red Chasm Sietch, Agarves met with Stilgar's band at an abandoned djedida. After falsely promising that Alia would forgive Stilgar, Alia's men attacked having been lead there by a secret signal transmitter hidden in the new boots given to Buer who was promptly killed by Stilgar.

AMPOLIROS, LEGEND OF.
The legendary "Flying Dutchman" of space. It is unknown when the legend started but it is known to be pre-Guild. A passage of the Legend reads . . .

Like the men of the lost star-searcher, Ampoliros—sick at their guns forever seeking, forever prepared and forever unready.

AMTAL or AMTAL RULE.
A common rule on primitive worlds under which something is tested to determine its limits or defects. Commonly: testing to destruction.
Jamis sited the Amtal Rule for his duel with Paul Atreides.

ANTEAC, REVEREND MOTHER TERTUIS EILEEN.
(13??? A.G.—1372? A.G.)
A highly trained Reverend Mother, Tertuis Eileen Anteac was a Mentat (forbidden during the reign of Leto II) and a Truthsayer. Anteac had a scar on her forehead whose origin Moneo (Leto II's Majordomo.) was unable to determine.
Reverend Mother Anteac traveled to Rakis with Reverend Mother Marcus Claire Luyseyal, for the festival when Leto II set the amounts of melange that were given to supplicants. During their stay in the festival city of Onn (formerly Arrakeen), Reverend Mother Anteac complained to the Fish Speaker guard about their accommodation, this was when she was informed that their audience with the God Emperor had been moved from the third to the last position. This state of affairs caused much consternation as the Bene Gesserit were reduced to just five Reverend Mothers due to the shortage of spice available to them.
While waiting to see the God Emperor, Reverend Mother Anteac was sent a message by Othwi Yake, a Bene Gesserit spy in the Ixian embassy. The contents of the message were twofold. Firstly he warned that the embassy was infiltrated by Tleilaxu Face Dancers. The Second point was from the Tleilaxu themselves, they revealed they were going to make an attempt against the life of the God Emperor himself.
The arrival of the new Duncan Idaho ghola on Rakis raised the possibility in Anteac's mind that he may be a Face Dancer assassin. After conferring with Reverend Mother Luyseyal they agreed to warn Leto II about the plot against his life.
During the audience with the God Emperor several interesting events unfolded. Reverend Mothers Anteac and Luyseyal discussed their concerns over the research the Ixians were conducting into new machines that skirted the conventions of the Butlerian Jihad.
Reverend Mother Anteac acted as a distraction so that Reverend Mother Luyseyal could approach Leto II with a vial of spice essence they intended to use against him, however this plot was foiled. Leto II found their plot amusing so he agreed their spice allotment would remain at its present level for the next decade.
Later Reverend Mother Anteac accompanied a force of Leto II's Fish Speakers to the Ixian embassy where she helped them clear the embassy of Face Dancer infiltrators. Anteac objected to the God Emperor about the prisoners taken suggesting she wanted them all killed.
Impressed by her, Leto II sent Anteac to interview Hwi Noree as a prelude to investigating the no-chamber used in her creation on Ix. While on Ix Reverend Mother Anteac was also charged with finding the former Ixian ambassador Malky, she was ultimately successful however died carrying out her orders.

ARRAKEEN.
The first settlement on Arrakis; long-time seat of planetary government. The Residency Mansion was the government mansion in the days of the Old Empire, with arched ceilings that stood two stories tall with great crossbeams that were probably shipped to Arrakis across space at monstrous cost. No planet of the system grew trees to make such beams—unless the beams were imitation wood. The Residency had previously been the home of Count and Lady Fenring before House Atreides moved to Arrakis. Carthag the newly built Harkonnen capital was two hundred kilometers northeast from Arrakeen across the Broken Land.
Many Arrakeen houses were sealed by airlock doors and windows to conserve and reclaim interior moisture, due to the harsh conditions of the planet.
Arrakeen is surrounded by several landmarks such as . . .

• OLD GAP, a crevasse in the Arrakeen Shield Wall down to 224m.; blasted out by Paul Muad'Dib during the 'Arrakis Revolt' who used Atomics.
• RIMWAL WEST, a high scarp (4600m.) rising out of the Arrakeen Shield Wall.
• SHIELD WALL, a rock cliff that shields Arrakeen from the worst of the sand storms of Arrakis.

The landing control tower and landing field are located just outside Arrakeen. Over the exit of the Arrakeen landing field there is a crude inscription which reads . . .

"O you who know what we suffer here,
do not forget us in your prayers."

On the plain of Arrakeen just outside of the city is where Muad'Dib and the Fremen defeated the Sardaukar.
After Paul Muad'Dib became Emperor in 10193 A.G. Arrakeen was expanded as the city became the capital of the empire. The houses built for veterans of the Jihad formed an entire suburb of Arrakeen which stretched into the Imperial Basin past Tiemag.
The Atreides Keep built to house the Imperial family, dominated the northern suburbs of Arrakeen.
The temple of Alia's Fane that was newly built around the year 10206 A.G. was set into a desert sink at the edge of Arrakeen.

ASSASSIN'S HANDBOOK.
Third-century compilation of poisons commonly used in a War of Assassins. Later expanded to include those deadly devices permitted under the Guild Peace and Great Convention.
(See War of Assassins.)

AZHAR BOOK.
The Azhar book, described as a bibliographic marvel that preserves the great secrets of the most ancient faiths, was compiled by the Bene Gesserit around the year 1 A.G.
Very little is known about the content of the book, with the exception of the two passages below . . .

• "It is with reason and terrible experience that we call the pre-born Abomination. For who knows what lost and damned persona out of our evil past may take over the living flesh?"
• The one-eyed view of our universe says you must not look far afield for problems. Such problems may never arrive. Instead, tend to the wolf within your fences. The packs ranging outside may not even exist.
— The Azhar Book; Shamra I:4

Fremkit manuals on Arrakis read as follows . . .

"Manual of 'The Friendly Desert,' the place full of life. Here are the ayat and burhan of Life. Believe, and al-Lat shall never burn you."

It was believed that a Bene Gesserit Manipulator of Religions had influenced it as it read like the Azhar Book.

B

BALISET.
A nine-stringed musical instrument, lineal descendant of the zither, tuned to the Chusuk scale and played by strumming. Favorite instrument of Imperial troubadours.
Varota a famed master craftsman of balisets is a native of Chusuk.
Gurney Halleck was famed for his skill with the baliset. After the fall of House Atreides on Arrakis in 10191 A.G. Gurney bought a new one from Chusuk when he was hiding with smugglers, he did not believe it was a genuine Varota but believed it was probably made by a student of Varota's.
After his duel with Jamis, Paul took Jamis's Baliset as a trophy.
Chatt the Leaper, captain of the Fedaykin, leader of the death commandos who guarded Muad'Dib was a baliset player.
In the year 10216 A.G. a Kadeshian troubadour called Tagir Mohandis descended from merchant engineers played in the court of Alia for the Lady Jessica. He was robbed on Arrakis during the hajj and sought transport money to travel to Salusa Secundus and Farad'n's court. The lyrics of the song he played deeply angered Alia to the point she wished to kill him . . .

"You say you long for Caladan seas,
Where once you ruled, Atreides,
Without surcease—
But exiles dwell in stranger-lands!
You say 'twere bitter, men so rude,
To sell your dreams of Shai-Hulud,
For tasteless food—
And exiles, dwell in stranger-lands.
You make Arrakis grow infirm,
Silence the passage of the worm
And end your term—
As exiles, dwell in stranger-lands.
Alia! They name you Coan-Teen,
That spirit who is never seen
Until—"

However the Lady Jessica was satisfied by his performance and was given the money for his transport.
Leto II was gifted a baliset created by a master craftsman on Caladan on his fifth birthday by Gurney Halleck. In four years of practice, Leto had achieved a certain fluency, although the two bass side strings still gave him trouble at the age of nine.

BARADYE PISTOL.
A static-charge dust gun developed on Arrakis for laying down a large dye marker area on sand. Commonly found in a Fremkit.

BELA TEGEUSE.
The fifth planet of Kuentsing. Repudiated to be the third stopping place of the Zensunni (Fremen) forced migration.

BUTLERIAN JIHAD.
Also known as the Great Revolt. The crusade against computers, thinking machines, and conscious robots begun in 201 B.G. and concluded in 108 B.G. Its chief commandment remains in the O.C. Bible as "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." As well as outlawing thinking machines such as computers, artificial insemination was made illegal.
The Butlerian Jihad resulted in the deaths of untold billions of humans and the destruction of many libraries which saw the loss to humanity of the knowledge of most of its Terran past.
Out of the Great Revolt emerged two great schools that formed the Bene Gesserit and the Spacing Guild.
Mankind came to realize that religion was a divisive element in society so the C.E.T (the Commission of Ecumenical Translators), convened on Earth to unite humanity under the principle . . .

"Man may not be replaced."

Despite the prohibitions against thinking machines the Bene Gesserit maintain the knowledge of its breeding-lines in computers.
With the loss of machines, Mentats emerged as a necessity for data retrieval. The human-computer replaced the mechanical devices destroyed by the Butlerian Jihad.
The planets Ix, Richese, Tleilax and a few other outer planets escape the worst effects of the Butlerian Jihad. Ix and Richese become manufacturing centers for legal machines while Tleilax specializes in biotechnology. (How Richese and Ix escaped the more severe effects of the Butlerian Jihad, was the subject of a detailed study by Sumer and Kautman published in The Last Jihad.)
Two devices that are known the have survived from the time of the Butlerian Jihad are . . .

• SERVOK: clock-set mechanism to perform simple tasks; one of the limited "automatic" devices permitted after the Butlerian Jihad.
• FENCING PRISMS: That brainless automaton used in training sessions for swordsmen. Once, they'd been guided by an artificial intelligence, computer brains. The Butlerian Jihad had ended that, and now they ran on more limited programs.

In the Atreides Imperium under Paul Muad'Dib the planetary feudalism system remained in constant danger from a large technical class, but the effects of the Butlerian Jihad continued as a damper on technological excesses. Ixians, Tleilaxu, and a few scattered outer planets were the only possible threat in this regard. Mechanized warfare required a large technical class. The Atreides Imperium had channeled this force into other pursuits. No large technical class existed unwatched. And the Empire remained safely feudalist, naturally, since that was the best social form for spreading over widely dispersed wild frontiers—new planets.
Toward the end of his reign the Bene Gesserit thought there was increasing evidence that the Lord Leto employed computers, defying his own prohibitions and the proscriptions of the Butlerian Jihad. They unsuccessfully explored this avenue with the aim of extorting their own demands from him.

C

CALADAN.
Third planet of Delta Pavonis; birthworld of Paul-Muad'Dib. House Atreides ruled Caladan as a siridar-fief for twenty generations and resided in Castle Caladan which served the Atreides family as home for twenty-six generations.
In the year 10190 A.G. Count Hasimir Fenring became Siridar-Absentia of Caladan when House Atreides moved to Arrakis.
After the 'Arrakis Revolt' when Paul Muad'Dib and the Fremen defeated the Emperor and his Sardaukar in the year 10193 A.G. Lady Jessica was granted the fief of Caladan and Gurney Halleck was made the Regent Governor of Caladan.
Despite the special reverence held for Caladan as the place of Paul's birth, the Lady Jessica refused to make the planet a stop on the hajj.
Pundi Rice, a mutated rice whose grains, high in natural sugar, achieve lengths up to four centimeters is the chief export of Caladan. Paradan Melons and the famous Caladanian Wines are also widely exported.
Caladan is a temperate, sub-tropical world with jungles to the south and rice paddies concentrated in the river deltas, and a vibrant fishing industry.
Amongst the people of Caladan there are two prominent religions. The Ancient Teachings of Zen Hekiganshu and the Muadh Quran with its pure Ilm and Fiqh preserved among the pundi rice farmers.

CENVA, NORMA.
(Date of Birth & Death unknown.)
While many believe Aurelius Venport designed the first Guild ship, it was actually his mistress, Norma Cenva. She gave him the design along with five children.

CHAKOBSA.
The so-called "magnetic language" derived in part from the ancient Bhotani (Bhotani Jib—jib meaning dialect). A collection of ancient dialects modified by needs of secrecy, but chiefly the hunting language of the Bhotani, the hired assassins of the first Wars of Assassins.
In the language of Chakobsa a knife is called a Death Maker. Below are several Chakobsa words with translations.

"Sietch," A meeting place in time of danger.
"Ghanima," Spoil of war.
"Mu zein," This is no good.
"Koolish zein," This is all the good we may ever have.
"Jan-jan-jan," Go-go-go.

Below are several Chakobsa phrases, however there are unfortunately no translations.

"Miseces prejia, Andral t're pera! Trada cik buscakri miseces perakri—"

"Cignoro hrobosa sukares hin mange la pchagavas doi me kamavas na beslas lele pal hrobas!"

"Kushti bakka te."

The most ancient Chakobsa language was used by the Atreides as their private language with its difficult glottal stops and clicks, for privacy.

CHAUMAS.
(Aumas in some dialects)
A poison administered in solid food as distinguished from poison administered in some other way.
(See Chaumurky.)

CHAUMURKY.
(Musky or Murky in some dialects)
Chaumurky is a poison administered in a drink, popular with assassins.
Elrood IX is one of the most famous victims of poisoning when he succumbed to chaumurky in the year 10156 A.G. The frequently discredited Pirate History of Corrino related the curious story that Fenring was responsible for the chaumurky, though it was never proved.
Stilgar once had voted to have Farad'n assassinated, holding out for the subtle application of chaumurky: poison administered in a drink. Farad'n was known to be partial to certain sweet liquors.
Bashar Tyekanik, a Sardaukar officer who served Wensicia Corrino was an adept of chaumurky, chaumas, and other subtleties of royal assassination.

CHEOPS.
Pyramid chess; nine-level chess with the double object of putting your queen at the apex and the opponent's king in check.

CHUSUK.
Fourth planet of Theta Shalish; the so-called "Music Planet" noted for the quality of its musical instruments. Navachristianity is the dominant religion of Chusuk.
Varota, considered the finest craftsman of balisets is a native of Chusuk.
(See Baliset.)

CONE OF SILENCE.
The field of a distorter that limits the carrying power of the voice or any other vibrator by damping the vibrations with an image-vibration 180 degrees out of phase.
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen had a Cone of Silence installed in his Keep.

CORRIN, THE BATTLE OF.
The space battle from which the Imperial House Corrino took its name. The battle fought near Sigma Draconis in the year 88 B.G. settled the ascendancy of the ruling House from Salusa Secundus.
Bashar Abulurd Harkonnen was accused of cowardice by an (unknown) Atreides and exiled, this event started the feud between House Harkonnen and House Atreides which would last for almost ten-thousand years.

CORRINO, WENSICIA.
(Date of Birth and Death unknown.)
The third daughter of Shaddam Corrino IV she married Dalak Fenring a relative of Count Hasimir Fenring, she gave birth to Farad'n their only known son in the year 10198 A.G. At some unknown date Dalak died before Farad'n's eighteenth birthday.
After Shaddam's defeat by Muad'Dib and his Fremen legions she followed her father into exile on their homeworld Salusa Secundus.
Bashar Tyekanik, a Sarduakar officer is noted as saying Wensicia reminded him of her father. Attempting to prepare her son for rule she ordered Tyekanik to follow the religion of Muad'Dib in the hope that Farad'n would see the benefit of controlling the Imperium through religious belief.
In the year 10216 A.G. Alia Atreides lover Javid was Wensicia's spy. That same year Wensicia's attempted assassination of Leto and Ghanima prompted the Bene Gesserit to file a formal protest against House Corrino through Sabit Rekush of the Landsraad Internal Security Commission.
When the Lady Jessica arrived on Salusa Secundus after escaping from Arrakis it was Wensicia who objected to her son accepting her as his Bene Gesserit teacher, this was to prove to be a tragic event for Wensicia as she was banished by Farad'n due to increased tension between them.
The ultimate fate of Wensicia and the date of her death is unknown.

D

DE, VRIES, PITER.
(Date of Birth unknown—10191 A.G.)
A Tleilaxu Twisted Mentat bought by the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Piter de Vries, a Mentat-Assassin with hawk features, blue-ink eyes of spice addiction, he was tall, though slender, and something about him suggested effeminacy, it was Piter who invented Residual Poison, he was considered highly dangerous and a sadist who enjoyed the pain he inflicted on others.

RESIDUAL POISON: an innovation attributed to the Mentat Piter de Vries whereby the body is impregnated with a substance for which repeated antidotes must be administered. Withdrawal of the antidote at any time brings death.

Piter de Vries had predicted to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen that the Lady Jessica would bear a daughter to the Duke Leto, this was one of the few occasions that he was wrong.
During the year 10190 A.G. House Atreides learned that the Harkonnens were offering a reward of a million Solaris for anyone who would bring them a single crysknife. It was deduced that if Piter de Vries had a crysknife he could infiltrate a fremen sietch due to his spice addiction.
As part of the feud between House Harkonnen and House Atreides it was Piter and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who devised the plan to destroy House Atreides on the planet Arrakis. It was Piter who stabbed Dr Yueh in the back when he demanded the return of his wife for his betrayal of House Atreides. For his duties in the service to House Harkonnen Piter was promised the Lady Jessica and it was intended for Piter de Vries to gain the fief of Arrakis, however due to his untimely death during the interrogation of Duke Leto Atreides by means of poison gas from a false tooth the plan was changed and Count Glossu Rabban gained Arrakis.
The residual poison developed by Piter was used as a means of tying the captive Thurfir Hawat to the service of House Harkonnen.

E

ECAZ.
Fourth planet of Alpha Centauri B; Ecaz is commonly known as 'the sculptors' paradise', so called because it is the home of FOGWOOD, the plant growth capable of being shaped in situ solely by the power of human thought.
Other plant life from Ecaz includes;

• PLENISCENTA: an exotic green bloom noted for its sweet aroma.
• SAPHO: a high-energy liquid extracted from barrier roots of Ecaz. Commonly used by Mentats who claim it amplifies mental powers. Users develop deep ruby stains on mouth and lips.
• VERITE: one of the Ecaz will-destroying narcotics. It renders a person incapable of falsehood.
• ELACCA WOOD: Highly prized wood From Ecaz which is the color of blood, it is jade-pink when petrified wood is used. Elacca wood is unique for the fact that two different narcotic drugs can be produced from it.
ELACCA DRUG: narcotic formed by burning blood-grained elacca wood. Its effect is to remove most of the will to self-preservation. Druggee skin shows a characteristic carrot color. Commonly used to prepare slave gladiators for the ring.
SEMUTA: the second narcotic derivative (by crystal extraction) from burned residue of elacca wood. The effect (described as timeless, sustained ecstasy) is elicited by certain atonal vibrations referred to as semuta music.
• KRIMSKEL FIBER or KRIMSKELL ROPE: The "claw fiber" woven from strands of the hufuf vine from Ecaz. Knots tied in krimskell will claw tighter and tighter to preset limits when the knot-lines are pulled. Krimskel Fiber is the subject of Holjance Vohnbrook's book "The Strangler Vines of Ecaz."

In the year 15230 A.G. Ecaz was conquered by the Honored Matres.

F

FAMILY ATOMICS.
The practice of maintaining stockpiles of atomic weapons was an integral part of a House's defense. Atomics were often stored off-world in secret locations as part of retaliation system should a Great House suffer total defeat in the face of a foe, such attacks using atomics were illegal during the Corrino and Atreides Imperiums under the terms of the Great Convention.
Many Great Houses justified their stockpiles by subscribing to the argument that nuclear weapons were a reserve held for one purpose: defense of humankind should a threatening "other intelligence" ever be encountered, however just as many other Great Houses used this argument with great cynicism maintaining their stockpiles for their destructive power and as a deterrent against enemies.
Lasgun beams when they intersect with a shield produce an explosion that could not be distinguished from and atomic blast, for this reason lasgun-shield explosions as a tactic were discouraged for fear of accusations of violating the Great Convention.

• GREAT CONVENTION: the universal truce enforced under the power balance maintained by the Guild, the Great Houses, and the Imperium. Its chief rule prohibits the use of atomic weapons against human targets. Each rule of the Great Convention begins: "The forms must be obeyed . . ."
• LASGUN: continuous-wave laser projector. Its use as a weapon is limited in a field-generator-shield culture because of the explosive pyrotechnics (technically, subatomic fusion) created when its beam intersects a shield.

A common tactic of defeated Houses was to become a renegade House, taking family atomics and shields and fleeing beyond the Imperium, the Guild would permit this provided they were given guarantees that the renegade House would not use their atomics to violate the Great Convention.
In the year 10193 A.G. Paul Muad'Dib used a loophole in the Great Convention to use atomics against obstacles on the battlefield, declaring at the time . . .

"It's fear, not the injunction that keeps the Houses from hurling atomics against each other. The language of the Great Convention is clear enough: 'Use of atomics against humans shall be cause for planetary obliteration.' We're going to blast the Shield Wall, not humans."

The scale of atomic stockpiles and the need for the Great Convention was clearly stated during Muad'Dib's Lecture to the War College when he said that each Great Family had enough atomics to destroy the planetary bases of fifty or more other Families.
Stone Burners although used atomic components were not subject to the prohibitions of the Great Convention. There are two known events where stone burners were used:

• The conquest of Naraj, where Farok's son was blinded when the defenders of the planet used a stone burner.
• The attempted assassination of Paul Muad'Dib when the Qizarate lead by Korba detonated a stone burner in the old quarter of Arrakeen in the year 10206 A.G. The stone burner was smuggled from the planet Tarahell to Arrakis by Otheym.

During the reign of the God Emperor Leto II all atomics were rooted out and confiscated.
After the death of Leto II the Great Convention was still enforced against atomics and the pseudoatomics of lasgun-shield interaction and were outlawed under regional treaties, however the invention of no-ships had made the use of atomics a viable option.

FEDAYKIN.
Fremen death commandos; historically: a group formed and pledged to give their lives to right a wrong. The Fedaykin were lead by Paul Muad'Dib in raids against the Harkonnens and also spearheaded the attack against the Emperor's Sardaukar in the year 10193 A.G.
A highly religious force, the Fedaykin used many rituals and chants before a battle. The death chant of the Fedaykin, the words the death commandos recited as they buried themselves into battle began . . .

"The world is a carcass,
Who can turn away the Angel of Death?
What Shai-hulud has decreed must be."

YA HYA CHOUHADA: "Long live the fighters!" The Fedaykin battle cry. Ya (now) in this cry is augmented by the hya form (the ever-extended now). Chouhada (fighters) carries this added meaning of fighters against injustice. There is a distinction in this word that specifies the fighters are not struggling for anything, but are consecrated against a specific thing—that alone.

Several notable Fedaykin were:

• Chatt the Leaper, captain of the Fedaykin, leader of the death commandos who guarded Muad'Dib.
• Otheym a Fedaykin lieutenant, he later joined the Fremen Jihad.
• Korba a Fedaykin lieutenant who gave up his military service to become leader of the Fremen Qizarate.
• Shishakli, a squad leader of the Fedaykin who give his own hooks to Paul Muad'Dib when he attempted to ride a sandworm for the first time.
• A Fedaykin lieutenant named Tandis was the person who told Paul Muad'Dib he had two children after the death of Chani.
• Ghadhean al-Fali a Fedaykin and Naib who helped save the Lady Jessica's live on Arrakis when her daughter Alia tried to have her assassinated.

At the beginning of the Fremen Rebellion on Arrakis in the year 10216 A.G. fewer than two hundred Fedaykin remained on Arrakis. The others held posts throughout the Empire.
It is believed that the Fedaykin were disbanded shortly after Leto II's ascension to the Imperial throne.

FENRING, COUNT HASIMIR.
(10118 A.G.—10225 A.G.)
A distaff cousin of House Corrino, he was a childhood companion of Shaddam IV. (The frequently discredited Pirate History of Corrino related the curious story that Fenring was responsible for the chaumurky which disposed of Elrood IX.) All accounts agree that Fenring was the closest friend Shaddam IV possessed. The Imperial chores carried out by Count Fenring included that of Imperial Agent on Arrakis during the Harkonnen regime there and later Siridar-Absentia of Caladan. He joined Shaddam IV in retirement on Salusa Secundus.
Dalak Fenring, a relative of Hasimir (though it should be noted the relationship is unknown as to whether he was a brother or cousin.) married Wensicia Corrino, one of Shaddam IV's daughters.
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen called the Count "The Ambassador to the Smugglers," indicating the Emperor's interest in smuggling operations on Arrakis, as this was the usual means of sending spies to the planet.
After the near destruction of House Atreides on Arrakis in the year 10191 A.G. it was Count Fenring who allayed the Landsraad's suspicions after the Arrakis Affair. It cost more than a billion solaris in spice bribes, and there were other gifts as well: slave women, royal honors, and tokens of rank.
After the defeat of the Emperor and his forces on Arrakis by Paul Atreides and his Fremen legions in the year 10193 A.G. Count Fenring refused to kill Paul at Shaddam's behest.
As part of the Bene Gesserit breeding program, he was one of the might-have-beens, an almost Kwisatz Haderach, crippled by a flaw in the genetic pattern—a eunuch, his talent concentrated into furtiveness and inner seclusion. As a result he was invisible to prescient vision in a similar manner to Guild Navigators who are also invisible.
Count Fenring spent the last thirty-two years of his life in exile on Salusa Secundus with the deposed Emperor Shaddam IV.

FREMEN JIHAD.
In 10193 A.G. the Fremen Jihad began with the Fremen legions and Muad'Dib's Qizarate missionaries spreading their religious war across space in a Jihad which lasted only twelve standard years, but in that time, religious colonialism brought all but a fraction of the human universe under one rule. The war lasted until 10206 A.G. by which time at a conservative estimate, sixty-one billion people have been killed, ninety planets sterilized, five hundred others completely demoralized. And the followers of forty religions exterminated.
At the start of the Jihad Otheym one of Muad'Dib's Fedaykin joined the Fremen Jihad. Farok a Fremen Naib joined the Fremen Jihad and left Arrakis as Bashar of the Ninth Legion in the Jihad,
The critical event that sparked the Jihad was the 'Arrakis Revolt' which saw Shaddam IV deposed and Paul Muad'Dib made Emperor of the Imperium, although Shaddam was defeated in the year 10193 A.G. he did not abdicate his throne until 10196 A.G. when he was replaced by the Regency set up in the name of his eldest daughter, Irulan.
Although the precise details of the Jihad are unknown several of the campaigns were . . .

• The conquest of Tarahell where Otheym caught the splitting disease.
• The conquest of Enfeil where Farok saw for the first time in his life a sea.
• The Molitor victory, where Farok was present.
• The conquest of Naraj, where Farok's son was blinded when the defenders of the planet use a stone burner.
• The conquest of the planet Sembou which was concluded by the Semboule Treaty.
• One of the last campaigns of the war was the Zabulon conquest involving two hundred and five attack frigates with thirty legions and support battalions.

G

GALACH.
Official language of the Imperium. Hybrid Inglo-Slavic with strong traces of cultural-specialization terms adopted during the long chain of human migrations.
There are twenty-eight different words for melange in common Galach. They describe it by its intended use, by its dilution, by its age, by whether it came through honest purchase, through theft or conquest, whether it was the dower gift for a male or for a female, and in many other ways is it named.
There are only two known words of the Galach language . . .

• OUT-FREYN: Galach for "immediately foreign," that is: not of your immediate community, not of the select.
• RICHECE: Galach for a House Minor, the planet-bound entrepreneur class of the Imperium.

GAMONT.
Third planet of Niushe; noted for its hedonistic culture and exotic sexual practices. The second planet of Niushe Grumman, ruled by House Moritani is presumed to control Gamont.
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen had a slave boy from Gamont that looked like Paul Atreides.

GIEDI PRIME.
A planet of Ophiuchi B (36), homeworld of House Harkonnen. A median-viable planet with a low active-photosynthesis range. Renamed Gammu during the Scattering by settlers from the Danian group (formerly Caladan), its parent star was described as having a yellow-green variation with the planet having a day of 31.27 standard hours and a 2.6 SY. Giedi Prime had more than one moon however the total number of moons is unknown. Genetic lines on Giedi Prime were drawn from Greek, Pathan and Mameluke, shadows of ancient history that few outside of professional historians or those trained by the Bene Gesserit could even name.
• INKVINE: A creeping plant native to Giedi Prime and frequently used as a whip in the slave cribs. Victims are marked by beet-colored tattoos that cause residual pain for many years.
Gurney Halleck had an inkvine scar on his face that had been put there by Beast Rabban in a Harkonnen slave pit on Giedi Prime.

Two important land marks on Giedi Prime were . . .

• Forest Guard Station, part which was a Harkonnen hunting lodge. In the time of the Old Empire and even under the reign of Muad'Dib, the region around the Forest Guard Station had been a forest reserve, high ground rising well above the oily residue that tended to cover Harkonnen land. The Harkonnens had grown some of the finest pilingitam, a wood of steady currency, valued by the supremely rich as they preferred fine woods rather than with the mass-produced artificial materials known then as polastine, polaz, and pormabat (latterly: tine, laz, and bat).
During the reign of the God Emperor Leto II the lodge was converted into a Fish Speaker Command Center and was abandoned during the Scattering, and then it was again converted this time into a Bene Gesserit Keep.
• The capital Barony, renamed Ysai during the Scattering was dominated by the Harkonnen Keep for which the city was named, the Keep was Nine hundred and fifty stories tall, Forty-five kilometers long and thirty kilometers wide, made from Plasteel and armor-plaz.
Barony had been a modern city, meaning technologically usiform up to the norms of its time. It had relied exclusively on suspensor guide-beams for transport of people and material—all of them high up. No ground-level openings. The plan translated physically into a city that used every possible square meter of vertical and horizontal space for things other than movement of goods and humans. Harkonnen architecture was dominated by squares and rectangles. Except for the rectangular absolute imposed by Harkonnen whim, Barony was built to a particular population-design criterion: maximum stuffing with minimum expenditure of materials.
The city was dotted by many counting outposts, two stories tall with fire-lance gaps aimed at the approaches and built from native dirt and turned into one giant brick by preforming it in mud bricks and then superheating it with a wide-bore burner, the kind the Harkonnens used to control mobs, observers counted (and sometimes killed) the people who passed.

Duncan Idaho spent many years on Giedi Prime (although it is unknown if he was born there), and was hunted by the Harkonnens near Forest Guard Station as a child. His sister, mother and other members of his family were killed before the Atreides rescued him.
Gurney Halleck spent many years as a slave on Giedi Prime where he received his inkvine scar from Rabban. Gurney's sister died at the hands of the Harkonnens, like Duncan he was rescued by House Atreides.
During the reign of Leto II a Cult of Alia was discovered on Giedi Prime, setup by the Bene Gesserit who used the cult as cover in their efforts in trying to locate a hidden stockpile of melange, the cult was suppressed by Leto II's priesthood.
During the Scattering House Harkonnen abandoned Giedi Prime which was renamed Gammu by settlers from the Danian group.
The Bene Gesserit Mentat Bashar Miles Teg had led soldiers from 'The Sixty-Seventh Gammu' on Renditai, after the campaign many of the soldiers returned to Gammu however some remained to serve with him at Acline.
Around the year 15120 A.G. The Honored Matres established a new cell on Gammu after their flight from their defeat in the Scattering.

GINAZ, HOUSE OF.
One-time allies of Duke Leto Atreides. They were defeated in the War of Assassins with House Moritani of Grumman.
Duncan Idaho, Warmaster of House Atreides was a Swordmaster trained by the Ginaz.
The swordsmanship of the Sardaukar was said to match that of the Ginaz tenth level.

GRUMMAN.
The second planet of Niushe, noted chiefly for the feud of its ruling House (Moritani) with House Ginaz. The third planet of the system is Gamont.
Duncan Idaho in the service of Duke Leto Atreides first blooded his sword on Grumman when he killed a Harkonnen.

H

HAGAL.
Described as the "Jewel Planet" of the II Theta Shaowei star system. The planet was mined out in the time of Shaddam I (date unknown).
Opafire jewels are one of the rare opaline jewels of Hagal.
The Golden Lion Throne was carved from a single piece of Hagal quartz—blue-green in translucency light shot through it with streaks of yellow fire.

HARKONNEN, FEYD-RAUTHA.
(10174 A.G.—10193 A.G.)
Born Feyd-Rautha Rabban, he took the name Harkonnen when chosen for the Siridar-Baron's household, he was the youngest son of the Siridar-Baron's youngest demibrother, Abulurd.
On his seventeenth birthday, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen killed his one hundredth slave-gladiator in the family games held in honor of the na-Baron's nativity and to remind all Harkonnens and subjects that Feyd-Rautha was the heir-designate, present were his cousines and cousins, demibrothers, concubines and his out-freyn relations.
After the games Lady Margot Fenring a Bene Gesserit seduced Feyd and left Giedi Prime pregnant with his child as part of the Bene Gesserits plan to preserve the Harkonnen bloodline as part of the secret Bene Gesserit breeding program. It was originally the intention of the Bene Gesserit for the Lady Jessica to produce an Atreides daughter. The plan was to inbreed this daughter with Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, a nephew of the Baron Vladimir, with the high probability of a Kwisatz Haderach from that union, however this plan was abandoned when she gave birth to Paul Atreides.
After Feyd tried and failed to have the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen assassinated he was forced by the Baron to prove his loyalty going down to the slave quarters, to kill all the women in the pleasure wing by his own hands.
As part of the Baron's plan to use Rabban to suppress the population of Arrakis it was his intention to send Feyd to the planet to gain trust of the people so that they could be more easily used by House Harkonnen.
In the year 10193 A.G. after the defeat of the Emperor and his allies on Arrakis Feyd-Rautha dueled with Paul Muad'Dib with the Emperor's blade in his hand. The duel was hard fought but resulted in the death of Feyd. Upon his death Fey-Rautha left behind a bastard daughter, presumably the child borne by Lady Margot Fenring.

HARMONTHEP.
Ingsley gives this as the planet name for the sixth stop in the Zensunni migration. It is supposed to have been a no longer existent satellite of Delta Pavonis, the same star system the planet Caladan is located in. The ultimate fate of Harmonthep is unknown although the only known weapon possessed by mankind capable of destroying a planet is a stone burner.

J

JACURUTU.
Jacurutu was once the sietch of a Fremen tribe called the Iduali, which meant 'water insects,' because those people wouldn't hesitate to steal the water of another Fremen. The other tribes banded together and wiped out the Iduali a long time ago, before Kynes, Stilgar recalled it was back in his great-great-grandfather's days. From that day no Fremen had gone to Jacurutu as it was declared taboo. However there were survivors as all of the inhabitants of a sietch were seldom at home. Parties roamed the desert and trekked to the towns.
As time went by Jacurutu came to be know by other names, Shuloch and Fondak to hide its past. As Fondak, it survived as a smuggler camp and acting under the cover of the unspoken convention by which they were allowed to exist. The ruling family of the planet would always have a back door for escape in extremis. And a small share in smuggling profits kept the channels open. This way the Cast Out had hidden Jacurutu right out in the open, secure in the taboo which kept Fremen from it.
Jacurutu/Shuloch/Fondak was hidden from accidental discovery by means of a poisoned cistern which killed all animal life nearby which would normally alert Fremen to the sign of water nearby.
Jacurutu's heart a cliff-walled pan with interfringing blind canyons leading down into it. A thick growth of shadescale and salt bushes lined the lower edges of these canyons with an inner ring of fan palms, which indicated the water riches of the place. Crude buildings of greenbush and spice-fiber had been built out from the fan palms. The buildings were green buttons scattered on the sand. There would live the cast out of the Cast Out, those who could go no lower except into death.

JAMIS.
(Date of Birth unknown.—10191 A.G.)
A native of Sietch Tabr, little is known of Jamis' early life, but sometime between 10181 A.G.—10183 A.G. he killed Geoff and took his wife Harah as his own along with her son Kaleff, Harah quickly fell pregnant giving birth to Orlop in 10183 A.G.
Described as one to hold a grudge he invoked the tahaddi al-burhan to challenge Paul Atreides after he subdued Jamis at Tuono Basin.
Stilgar trying to take the challenge away from Paul Atreides is recorded as saying to Jessica . . .

"Jamis is one to hold a grudge, Sayyadina. Your son bested him and I've bested him myself. He seeks by this tahaddi challenge to get back at me as well. There's too much of violence in Jamis for him ever to make a good leader—too much ghafla, the distraction. He gives his mouth to the rules and his heart to the sarfa, the turning away. No, he could never make a good leader. I've preserved him this long because he's useful in a fight as such, but when he gets this carving anger on him he's dangerous to his own society."

This ploy failed and ultimately Paul defeated Jamis during the duel.
The funeral for Jamis was held shortly afterward giving great insight into the past of Jamis, with Stilgar saying . . .

"When the hawk plane stooped upon us at Hole-in-the-Rock, it was Jamis pulled me to safety."

As leader's right, Stilgar took Jamis' robe. The marker for Jamis' coffee service, a flat disc of green metal was given to Paul as a ghanima, a spoil of battle. The coffee service comprised a pot with a Hagal emerald knob, the pot—fluting was silver with a female shape, almost pregnant.

A gray-bearded Freman said of Jamis.

"When our water went below minim at the siege at Two Birds, Jamis shared."

Another man took Jamis' paracompass and said.

"When the patrol caught us at Bight-of-the-Cliff and I was wounded, Jamis drew them off so the wounded could be saved."

Lady Jessica said.

"When the spirit of spirits within him saw the needs of truth, that spirit withdrew and spared my son."

Paul Atreides who was deeply affected by the experience as Jamis was the first man he killed said of him . . .

"Jamis taught me . . . that . . . when you kill . . . you pay for it. I wish I'd known Jamis better."

Paul later shed tears which astonished the Fremen as it was unusual to give moisture to the dead. Jamis carried thirty-three liters and seven and three-thirty-seconds drachms of the tribe's water, which was given to Paul as was his right. Harah wife of Jamis and his sons were Paul's responsibility for one year, after which she was free to marry again.
Jamis was later immortalized, when Paul Atreides became Muad'Dib and Emperor of the Imperium. Jamis is remembered in the Dirge for Jamis, written by the Princess Irulan.

Do you wrestle with dreams?
Do you contend with shadows?
Do you move in a kind of sleep?
Time has slipped away.
Your life is stolen.
You tarried with trifles,
Victim of your folly.
— Dirge for Jamis on the Funeral Plain,
from "Songs of Muad'Dib"
by the Princess Irulan

L

LANDSRAAD.
The Landsraad League was formed around the year 2000 B.G.
The Imperium was designed as a three-point system with the Imperial Household balanced against the Federated Great Houses of the Landsraad, and between them, the Guild with its monopoly on interstellar transport.
The Landsraad was controlled by a High Council empowered to act as supreme tribunal in House to House disputes and appoint a Judge of the Change to monitor a change of fief or a formal battle in a War of Assassins.
The Solari, official monetary unit of the Imperium, had its value set at quatricentennial negotiations between the Guild, the Landsraad, and the Emperor.
The Landsraad Council was a federation of the Great Houses of the Imperium while the regional Sysselraads represented minor parties on a planetary level.
One of the most compelling circumstances that held the Landsraad together was their fear that the Emperors Sardaukar would pick them off one by one. Only in union could they match the Imperial forces.
Toward the end of Shaddam Corrino's reign Duke Leto Atreides was an unofficial spokesman for many of the Landsraad Houses, his popularity would eventually lead to his death and the near destruction of House Atreides in the year 10191 A.G. Many members of the Landsraad concerned and suspicious about the actions of the Emperor were bribed by Count Hasimir Fenring after the Arrakis Affair.
In 10193 A.G. the Landsraad voted to supply money to hire mercenaries to bolster the forces of the Emperor, House Harkonnen and the allied Great Houses during the final battle on Arrakis against the Fremen lead by Paul Muad'Dib.
After the apparent assassination of Leto Atreides II in the year 10216 A.G. Stilgar sent a report to the Landsraad Commission . . .

I saw his blood and a piece of his robe which had been ripped by sharp claws. His sister reports vividly of the tigers, the sureness of their attack. We have questioned one of the plotters, and others are dead or in custody. Everything points to a Corrino plot. A Truthsayer has attested to this testimony.
— Stilgar's Report to the Landsraad Commission

The Bene Gesserit for their own reasons formally protested against House Corrino for their involvement, sending a letter through Sabit Rekush to Salusa Secundus.

"Bene Gesserit Council on Wallach IX files formal protest against House Corrino in assassination of Leto Atreides II. Arguments and showing of evidence are assigned to Landsraad Internal Security Commission. Neutral ground will be chosen and names of judges will be submitted for approval by all parties. Your immediate response required. Sabit Rekush for the Landsraad."

House Corrino did not respond however as Leto II later re-appeared this proved fortunate as the next Landsraad session was almost two standard years away in the year 10218 A.G.
Leto II dissolved the Landsraad at some unknown point during his reign.

LANKIVEIL.
A variant of the Buddislamic religion is dominant on the planet of Lankiveil.
When Abulurd the demibrother of Vladimir renounced the Harkonnen name and all rights to the title he was given the subdistrict governorship of Rabban-Lankiveil. Rabban was a distaff name. Abulurd's eldest son Glossu Rabban was Count of Lankiveil until the defeat of House Harkonnen by Paul Atreides in the year 10193 A.G.

LUYSEYAL, REVEREND MOTHER MARCUS CLAIRE.
(Date of Birth & Death unknown.)
Reverend Mother Marcus Claire Luyseyal was reputed to be the best Truthsayer the Bene Gesserit had during the last few years of the reign of Leto II despite her young age. With striking red hair, her features were described as being of the Jessica-type.
She was present with Reverend Mother Tertuis Eileen Anteac, for the festival when Leto II set the amounts of melange that were given to supplicants each decade. During the audience with the God Emperor it was Reverend Mother Anteac's role to distract Leto II while Reverend Mother Luyseyal got close enough to use a vial of concentrated spice essence (thought of as a specific poison for sandworms.) against the God Emperor, However this plot failed but did not affect the spice allotment for the Bene Gesserit as their scheme amused him.
As the audience continued it was Reverend Mother Luyseyal who admitted that the Tleilaxu and the Ixians had made an alliance with the Guild and sought the Bene Gesserits full cooperation. The discussion between the Reverend Mothers and Leto II were heated and resulted in Luyseyal's outburst.

"Do you know what the Ixians boast?
That their machine will predict your actions!"

However Leto was not concerned as he knew the Ixian machines were incapable of supplanting the complexities of the human mind.
During the audience it was assumed Reverend Mother Anteac was the senior because of her age, however it was Luyseyal who had seniority between the pair.

M

MUAD'DIB.
The adapted kangaroo mouse of Arrakis, originally of terranic origin, a creature associated in the Fremen earth-spirit mythology with a design visible on the planet's second moon. This creature is admired by Fremen for its ability to survive in the open desert.
Paul Atreides was named after the kangaroo mouse.
A constellation from the Arrakeen sky was named "Muad'Dib: The Mouse," with the tail pointed north.
Fremen tradition holds the kangaroo mouse in high regard and called it 'instructor-of-boys.' due to its ability to thrive in the harsh conditions of Arrakis.

P

PANOPLIA PROPHETICUS.
Term covering the infectious superstitions used by the Bene Gesserit to exploit primitive regions.
The Panoplia Propheticus was used by the Bene Gesserit, especially those directly involved in the work of the Missionaria Protectiva as a form of defense, seeding legends and prophecies to help protect Bene Gesserit sisters in need of help and cut-off from the sisterhood.
The prophetic legends seeded by the Bene Gesserit amongst the Fremen had taken on Arrakis even to the extent of adopted labels (including Reverend Mother, canto and respondu, and most of the Shari-a panoplia propheticus). The Ibn Qirtaiba a Fremen religious incantation was derived directly from Panoplia Propheticus.

• CANTO and RESPONDU: an invocation rite, part of the panoplia propheticus of the Missionaria Protectiva.
• IBN QIRTAIBA: "Thus go the holy words . . ." Formal beginning to Fremen religious incantation (derived from panoplia propheticus).
• SHARI-A: that part of the panoplia propheticus which sets forth the superstitious ritual.

Little is known of the content of the Panoplia Propheticus with the exception of one passage:

We do not teach history; we recreate the experience. We follow the chain of consequences—the tracks of the beast in its forest. Look behind our words and you see the broad sweep of social behavior that no historian has ever touched.
— Bene Gesserit Panoplia Propheticus
(See Missionaria Protectiva.)

PORITRIN.
The third planet of Epsilon Alangue, considered by many Zensunni Wanderers as their planet of origin, although clues in their language and mythology show far more ancient planetary roots.

Q

R

RICHESE.
Fourth planet of Eridani A, classed with Ix as supreme in machine culture. Noted for miniaturization. (A detailed study on how Richese and Ix escaped the more severe effects of the Butlerian Jihad was, The Last Jihad by Sumer and Kautman.)

S

SALUSA SECUNDUS.
Third planet of Gamma Waiping; designated Imperial Prison Planet after removal of the Royal Court to Kaitain. Salusa Secundus is homeworld of House Corrino, and the second stopping point in migrations of the Wandering Zensunni. Fremen tradition says they were slaves on Salusa Secundus for nine generations.
Salusa Secundus is described as having a similar climate to Arrakis. As the Emperor's prison planet the mortality rate among new prisoners was higher than sixty per cent. The Emperor didn't permit the Great Houses to inspect his prison as it was used as a recruiting ground for the Imperial Corps of Sardaukar.
Shigawire, a metallic extrusion of a ground vine. (Narvi narviium) is grown only on Salusa Secundus and III Delta Kaising. It is noted for extreme tensile strength.
Laza Tigers the product of Genetic manipulation of ancient Terran stock were introduced to Salusa Secundus around the year 2000 A.G.
The Tawrah and Talmudic Zabur religions survive on Salusa Secundus.
After the 'Arrakis Revolt' Shaddam IV was sent into exile on Salusa Secundus where he was joined by Count Hasimir Fenring. To prevent the Sardaukar from becoming a permanent threat to the newly established Atreides Imperium, Paul Muad'Dib ordered that the climate of the planet be tamed so that the previous recruitment regime could not be continued.
The Qizarate reported that on Salusa Secundus, Irulan's father had been putting his one remaining legion through landing maneuvers in the year 10206 A.G. This forced Paul Muad'Dib to threaten to invade if this training did not cease.
After the death of Shaddam IV his royal palace on Salusa Secundus became Farad'n Corrino's court.
Farad'n's Mother Wesicia Corrino and a daughter of Shaddam IV had sandtrout smuggled to Salusa Secundus from Arrakis in the hope of breaking the Atreides spice monopoly by establishing a new spice cycle, this attempt ultimately failed.

SIKUN.
A planet of the 70 Ophiuchi A star system. A variant of the Buddislamic religion is dominant on Sikun.
AKARSO: A plant that is native to Sikun, characterized by almost oblong leaves. Its green and white stripes indicate the constant multiple, condition of parallel active and dormant chlorophyll regions.
RACHAG: A caffeine-type stimulant is extracted from the yellow berries of akarso.

T

TUPILE.
So-called "sanctuary planet" (probably several planets) for defeated Houses of the Imperium. Location(s) known only to the Guild and maintained inviolate under the Guild Peace. Schlag, an animal native to Tupile was once hunted almost to extinction for its thin, tough hide.
C.E.T. Chairman Toure Bomoko, an Ulema of the Zensunnis reportedly died on Tupile.
In 10190 A.G. a handful of spice would buy a home on Tupile.
The Tupile Treaty was re-negotiated by the Guild and the Emperor Paul Muad'Dib in the year 10196 A.G. and concluded in the year 10206 A.G. The Guild maintained that the treaty must be signed without knowing the precise location of the Tupile Entente. This demand had some support from Landsraad delegates. The price to the Guild for the Emperor's signature on the Tupile Treaty was the submission of the Ixian Confederacy to his tax demands.

WANNA, MARCUS.
(10092 A.G.—10186? A.G.)
Marcus Wanna, the wife of Dr. Wellington Yueh, it is unknown if she was a Reverend Mother, but it is a fact she was a Bene Gesserit Truthsayer. Her date of death is given as 10186 A.G. however this has never been confirmed.
She had no children with Dr. Yueh, and as it was known he was capable of fathering children it was suspected she had orders that he remain childless, thought the reasons for this remain unknown. During their marriage Wanna taught Yueh many techniques of the abilities of the Truthsaysers to the point where Dr. Yueh could at times detect falsehoods.
Wanna's favorite passage from the Orange Catholic Bible was . . .

Four-sixty-seven Kalima.

'From water does all life begin.'
"'Think you of the fact that a deaf person cannot hear. Then, what deafness may we not all possess? What senses do we lack that we cannot see and cannot hear another world all around us? What is there around us that we cannot—'"

Marcus Wanna disappeared in the year 10186 A.G. and she was presumed killed. The truth of the matter was that she was taken by the Harkonnens and used as a means of subverting Dr. Yueh's loyalties to House Atreides, leading to the attack on Arrakis in the year 10191 A.G.

WAR OF ASSASSINS.
The limited form of warfare permitted under the Great Convention and the Guild Peace. The aim is to reduce involvement of innocent bystanders. Rules prescribe formal declarations of intent and restrict permissible weapons. A War of Assassins is normally a result of a feud between rival Houses when Kanly (vendetta) is publicly declared. This ritualized form of warfare is overseen by a Judge of the Change to make sure the Dictum Familia, and other rules are observed.

• JUDGE OF THE CHANGE: an official appointed by the Landsraad High Council and the Emperor to monitor a change of fief, a kanly negotiation, or formal battle in a War of Assassins. The Judge's arbitral authority may be challenged only before the High Council with the Emperor present.
• KANLY: formal feud or vendetta under the rules of the Great Convention carried on according to the strictest limitations. Originally the rules were designed to protect innocent bystanders.
• DICTUM FAMILIA: that rule of the Great Convention which prohibits the slaying of a royal person or member of a Great House by informal treachery. The rule sets up the formal outline and limits the means of assassination.

Two famous Wars of Assassins are . . .
The defeat of House Ginaz by House Moritani of Grumman. The exact details of the war are unknown, however it occurred during the period when Leto I was Duke of Caladan which would place the conflict between the years 10154 A.G.—10190 A.G.
The War of Assassins between House Harkonnen and House Atreides in the year 10190 A.G.—10191A.G. when Duke Leto Atreides declared kanly. Liet Kynes, the Emperors Planetologist on Arrakis was declared the Judge of the Change to oversee the conflict. House Atreides started from an excellent position when Thufir Hawat Master of Assassins rooted out two hundred and fifty-nine of House Harkonnens key people within weeks of arriving on Arrakis, and a Hunter-seeker attack against Paul Atreides failed, this success was followed up with a daring raid which destroyed one of Baron Vladimir Harkonnens spice stockpiles on Giedi Prime. However House Harkonnen won the war with the clandestine aid of the Emperors Sardaukar during the attack on Arrakis which effectively destroyed House Atreides, until Paul Muad'Dib became Emperor with the aid of the Fremen.

Y

YUEH, WELLINGTON.
(10082 A.G.—10191 A.G.)
Described as having a high-pitched voice, a stick figure, square block of a head with purple lips and a drooping mustache, the diamond tattoo of Imperial Conditioning on his forehead and long black hair caught in the Suk School's silver ring at the left shoulder.
Dr. Wellington Yueh is best known as the infamous traitor of House Atreides and betrayer of Duke Leto. In the year 10112 A.G. Wellington Yueh graduated at the Suk School, with Imperial Conditioning that was assumed to be the ultimate conditioning that could not be removed without killing the subject.
As well as being the Suk doctor of House Atriedes he was also Paul's teacher.
In the year 10184 A.G. Dr. Wellington Yueh enters the service of House Atreides, two years later, 10186 A.G. his wife Marcus Wanna was abducted and presumably killed by the Harkonnens. Yueh was lead to believe his wife was still alive and this knowledge was used to subvert his Imperial conditioning with the aim of using him as a traitor inside the inner circles of House Atreides.
The attack on Arrakis in the year 10191 A.G. by House Harkonnen was when Yueh was instructed to sabotage the house generators of the Arrakeen Residency enabling the Harkonnens supported by the Emperors Sardaukar to all but wipeout House Atreides. Dr. Yueh killed the Shoudout Mapes and shot Duke Leto with a dartgun disabling him long enough to give Leto a poison gas tooth with which to kill the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
When Yueh demanded the return of his wife as payment for his betrayal of House Atreides he was given her body which amused Baron Vladimir's sadistic nature. Yueh was killed by the Twisted Mentat Piter de Vires.
It was Dr. Yueh who helped in part to arrange the escape of young Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica leaving them the ducal signet ring of House Atreides with his confession . . .

"Do not try to forgive me, I do not want your forgiveness. I already have enough burdens. What I have done was done without malice or hope of another's understanding. It is my own tahaddi al-burhan, my ultimate test. I give you the Atreides ducal signet as token that I write truly. By the time you read this, Duke Leto will be dead. Take consolation from my assurance that he did not die alone, that one we hate above all others died with him."

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen let it be said that Doctor Yueh died defending his Duke. In this way he was able instead to feed suspicions against the Lady Jessica as the betrayer of House Atreides. Covering his tracks Baron Harkonnen had his own report sent through the CHOAM Company channels that explained he discovered a doctor who pretended to the conditioning. A false doctor. Since everyone knew you could not counter the conditioning of a Suk School, this explanation was readily accepted.
Dr. Yueh's legacy as the betrayer of House Atreides was documented in at least two books . . .

YUEH (yu'e), Wellington (weling-tun), Stdrd 10,082-10,191; medical doctor of the Suk School (grd Stdrd 10,112); md: Wanna Marcus, B.G. (Stdrd 10,092-10,186?); chiefly noted as betrayer of Duke Leto Atreides. (Cf: Bibliography, Appendix VII [Imperial Conditioning] and Betrayal, The.)

Badass!

Obviously, I didn't read the whole thing, but I scanned it. I'll print out a copy and cozy up to it later.

Maybe we could move all of this over to the concordance project that Chig started. This looks like what he wanted for that document.

Why don't we copy it? I'd like to keep it here too.

I've updated the original post with a new version recently received from Edric.

Please feel free to post and entries any of you would like added.

Pardon my stupid questions, I also offer applause and appreciation for your efforts Edric, and encourge your further work.

My questions are this (may have been beat to death in another thread I dont know, I dont keep up as much as some folks do around here)

Is this work your doing, complimented or an enhancement to the Dune Encylcopedia that was published?

I am just asking cause I dont know the Orthordox viewpoint on the Encyclopedia. Canon? Garbage? Heresey? FanFic? worthy Tome?

I have a hardback copy, just a book club edition, but in mint shape. I havent read much of it yet, but The opening is written by FH, and seems to have somewhat of his approval.

I appreciate you all educating me, so I can be that much better an apprentice of the orthodoxy.

Again Edric this if for my own edification, to appreciate, even more, your efforts.

Fairday,
Trang
