ORTHODOX HERBERTARIAN
DUNE
TIMELINE

Below is a color code to the changes I've made to the timeline.

BLACK = Dr. Attila Torkos's original text.

RED = An error or something I have a problem with. I've only got three sections marked in red for the following reasons.

10146 A.G. I can’t find any evidence for this date as the birth of Idaho, also the Harkonnens were on Arrakis for 80 years according to DUNE so their rule there must have started in the year 10110 A.G.
10193 A.G. The red text I added shows the issue I have with that statement, this is because in [Appendix IV Dune] for the entry on Shaddam IV he did NOT give up the throne to Paul Atreides, he abdicated his throne so that Irulan would rule in his place. This is corrected in the 10196 entry I added to the timeline.
10212 A.G. Death of Shaddam Corrino IV, this is probable but no fixed date has ever been found in any of Frank Herbert's books! The date of death given in original prints of [Dune] give the date as 10,202 but this is known to be in error as Shaddam is still alive in the first few chapters of [Dune Messiah] which starts in the year 10,206.

BLUE = Is something I've added. It should be noted that the several entries added for the Landsraad and C.E.T. are obscure and were taken from APPENDIX II DUNE. The date Appr. 1900 A.G. was reached by adding 2000 years from the formation of the Guild and Bene Gesserit.

GREEN = Neither error nor addition but relates to differences between UK & US editions of the novels. Only 3 areas selected.

10156 A.G. & 136?? A.G. Both entries refer to the no-globe built on Giedi Prime. Below is the passage from Heretics of Dune used for evidence. With color coding which you know the key too (Red US only, Blue UK only).

"I agree it's primitive but it's also fascinating." Teg lifted his gaze to the scrollwork on the nearby kitchen ceiling. The moment of decision had arrived. Lucilla could not be depended upon to remain distracted much longer. Teg shared her fascination, though. It was easy to lose yourself in these marvels. The whole no-globe complex, some two hundred meters in diameter, was a fossil preserved intact from the time of the Tyrant. It was remarkably primitive in all of its aspects, including the machinery and the nullentropy bins at the core. Teg guessed it to be much earlier than that of the Tyrant and, if the stories about Dar-es-Balat were to be trusted, this early technology represented a remarkable achievement.

????? A.G. An entry showing part of Teg's career that is only in Heretics of Dune UK version. Below is the passage for evidence.

Teg had once said that at a negotiation, standing with his clenched fists pressed against a tabletop while he leaned toward the three stiff faces across from him—two men and a woman representing the combined interests of Fish Speakers and Ixians. The three were aligned against a Guild-fostered consortium which was fronting for CHOAM: a dispute over five planetary marketplaces. Bene Gesserit interests were involved because they maintained Keeps and other missions on each of the planets, all sure to be demolished in any violence arising from this dispute. The Sisterhood intruded in the role of interested arbitrator, showing at the start that they would take violent action against anyone resorting to arms.
Seeing the pattern in it, Teg had marshaled sixteen of his personally-trained legions in no-ship monitors prepared to act instantly at his signal.
Tempers ran high during the negotiations and Teg was never sure whether his eloquence or the certainty of escalated violence from his forces won the day for a compromise settlement. The compromise took two of his legions to each of the five planets, overseers of the agreement. Two of his lieutenants had been knifed and he had been forced to execute nine civilians before it was settled; minor bloodshed considering the potential for greater conflict.

Can't see the colors, and it's way too spaced out. Maybe if you broke it in half (in separate posts) and condensed it.

A good OH timeline would be very helpful to those reading Dune for the first time.

I'm a little dubious about the dates of the construction of the Giedi Prime/Gammu no-globe and Leto's Dar-es-Balat complex. (More on this later)

(Don't know, Orald. He has also gone through and found/marked the differences between the US and UK editions of at least two of the original books. And what have you done during the same time? Sorry, I understand there's bad blood between the two of you, but it's really petty to belittle something productive and potentially useful just because you don't like the person doing it. :? )

Fantomas, the problem with these dates is a well-known one. Even Kevin has alluded to them in his blahg (as one of Frank Herbert's errors that he and Brian have had to rectify in writing the new "Heroes" series).

But your bringing them up has at least served some purpose. In searching through the timeline for "Shaddam", I noticed that Edric has Shaddam and Fenring poisoning ole Elrood and lists "House Atreides/Dune" as the sources.

I was under the impression that this was an Orthodox Herbertarian version of the timeline. As such, it shouldn't include information from the new books, correct? I don't recall Shaddam being implicated in his father's death in Dune.

Actually, it is implied, in the Appendix IV:
COUNT HASIMIR FENRING (10,133-10,225)
A distaff cousin of House Corrino, he was a childhood companion of Shaddam IV.
(The frequently discredited Pirate History of Corrino related the curious story that Fenring was responsible for the chaumurky which disposed of Elrood IX.) All accounts agree that Fenring was the closest friend Shaddam IV possessed.
Of course, if Fenring is responsible, you know Shaddam's involved too.

(Fantomas: That's why on most boards newbies are advised to keep their mouths shut until they catch on.)

Orald, I should hope I don't have to remind you of this, but the Appendix IV: The Almanak en-Ashraf (Selected Excerpts of the Noble Houses) is an in-universe document. As such its contents have to be taken with a grain of salt. (It's the source of those wonky birth and death dates for Shaddam and Fenring, after all.) It mentions the story that Fenring was the poisoner in parenthesis and describes it as "frequently discredited". So we really cannot be sure whether Fenring did it or not, or whether Shaddam was complicit before or after the fact if Fenring did do it.

Since it is a supposition (however likely) it should not be entered in the timeline as fact.

orald wrote:Oh, and after the Great Betrayel I was kinda put off of serious Dune talk for awhile.
Yeah, I get that. But when did all that happen again? Get over it, already.

I know it's an in-universe source, and one highly questioned even there at that, but it's a hint. I do believe FH put it there as a better form of informing readers about that incident than putting it blatantly in some hard-fact registry, not to mention that if it was there then Fenring would've been executed long before.

Again, nothing more than supposition. (Both things you wrote. Seriously, get over the second one already. It's like a form of mental constipation.)

As it stands, you can't prove that Fenring did poison Elrood. (A hint is not a definitive statement. It could be a red herring.) If you insist that the suspicions of the time be included, that part of the timeline entry should read something like this:

Elrood IX succumbs to chaumurky (Hasimir Fenring is suspected but never charged).
"Let the dead give water to the dead. As for me, it's NO MORE FUCKING TEARS!"

Re: Orthodox Herbertarian Dune Timeline

Post by SandChigger »

FREAK: I was going to suggest doing this last night, but didn't have time. I've added the colors from Edric's file. Take the text between the quote tags here and paste it into your original post, then delete this post.
Freakzilla wrote:by Edric

Which born dates of these three fellows are Kosher? The ones in this Time Line?
Is not that I am a little slow on the uptake, children are just that way. I just want the correct dates. :D

Hang on a bit for an answer on that one, Fantomas, OK?

With all due respect to Edric and his effort, I for one am not ready to declare this "kosher" yet. I'm afraid it needs to be gone over with the ole fine-toothed and parts of it purged of heresies. ;)

This is from memory but is there not talk between Teg and Duncan of Leto II's knowledge of this early No-Globe construction and him turning a blind eye (as he did with the one on IX itself), allowing the last Harkonnens to fritters away their remaining funds.

So how could it have been built before his father’s birth?

There is discussion... But there's a huge scope in letos reign. I always imagined it having been constructed just prior to the ixian attempt. Maybe a couple of hundred years.
The descriptions of things inside from HoD i think. Duncan suggests that HH spent a lot of its dwindling wealth on this thing. But then im not 100% sure of the state of HH following gurney being given GP.

I have some issues with the date of Leto and Jessica meeting, and also Yuehs age (I just didnt think Yueh was really that old).

But then again these are just from my memory.... when i read them my imagination had a habit of reading what it wanted to read.
