I've read that he did drugs in Mexico and it wouldn't suprise me that he took 'shrooms but that story sounds a little far out to me.

I've heard about him doing drugs a long time ago, and considering what goes on in his books it doesn't surprise me.
FH himself was against wasting your brain with drugs- the whole focus of alot of his books is on streangthening the mind, that without the mind a human is but a beast.

He certainly didn't show recreational drugs such as semuta as being good(the spice isn't a recreational drug- it's never used for fun- in fact, I'm not sure there's all that fun using it at all).
Remember the drug+image thing in the streets of Barony in HoD that Lucilla sees?

If we had something like spice that only helps the mind then I wouldn't object. Right now all the drugs in human history are either for pain relief(which is a worthy cause) and/or recreational/religeous, the later of which I object to(well, religeous drugs are OK since we don't want to upset some primitive shamans, right? ).

That's why I don't really see caffaine(sp? damn I need to install that IE expansion...or I might just go straight to FF) as a proper drug.
It's a lame little stimulant at best. I think hot peppers give a more noticeable result...well, after digestion(this one's for you, Spicelon  ).

Yeah, yeah, drugs are bad.

You're forgetting the fact that spice is ridiculously addictive and that after long term consumption the withdrawls from it result in death.

The message I got from much of Frank's work is that nothing is absolute. Nothing is as black and white as people make it; there are typically shades of gray....

Funny, I was gonna say just that...but about oxigen. Or life. Water? Food?

No, the difference between spice and the rest of these recreational drugs you guys enjoy defending so much is that the spice helps and elevates, while all the other are just for "fun". The spice has no other effcts than elevating the human mind and lengthening the life span.

Odrade(?) says something along those lines in ChD IIRC. Too tired to look now, gonna go to sleep.

Yeah, those awful, evil drugs. Responsible for all the world's ills, except when it inspires an author to write a classic novel :)

Hypnobong.

Like I've said many time, there is a difference between use and abuse. Moderation.

:? Uhhh, no. You don't die from withdrawals from those. Those are necessities to keep a biological organism functioning. Lack of them will have deterimental health effects, but it has nothing to do with the term "withdrawal" as normally defined:

"Withdrawal, also known as withdrawal/abstinence syndrome, refers to the characteristic signs and symptoms that appear when a drug that causes physical dependence is regularly used for a long time and then suddenly discontinued or decreased in dosage." (wikipedia)

I'm not sure the orgy thing was really that close to what your recreational drugs do today. You can say Paul was trippin' all day and having major fun with his future visions...though I do believe it's mentioned he didn't like it that much...you know, boredom, sense of being doomed and all.

I believe you're basing your Piter argument on his words mentioning his "pleasures", but that's just a figure of speech.
Sure, it might be fun for a mentat to expand his mind and run calculations(talk about math geeks  ), but he's not trippin'.

Make your excuses anyway you like, but every junkie once said he'll be taking it in moderation.

That's why I think people shouldn't test themselves with that, you don't get anything worth the risk.

For some it takes a lifetime. If you're not a strong willed person, abstianance is probably a better choice.

Alot of people think they're more strong willed than they are because they're more strong headed than they think.
