The Sh*t History of Dune

Post by Naib »

This short Dune summary has appeared on youtube. It's pretty funny.

That was funny!
"... the mystery of life isn't a problem to solve but a reality to experience."

“There is no escape—we pay for the violence of our ancestors.”

Sandrider: "Keith went to Bobo's for a weekend of drinking, watched some DVDs,
and wrote a Dune Novel."

I think some of the photos he uses are especially funny.

Since I've never read most of them I've got to ask - is some of the content of this 'history' from the fan fiction novels? The bit about three types of mentats comes to mind, as does what it says about Holtzmann.

The Holtzmann stuff probably comes from the Encyclopedia. At least I hope that's what he's referencing.

I finally had a chance to look it up, and you were right. All of the weird facts listed in the video are directly from the DE. To be honest I've never taken a close look at it before, and I'm very surprised to see how much creative writing went into it. Even sadder to see parts of it pillaged and misused for the prequels.

The DE is my third-favorite Dune book, after Dune and GEoD.

I am sure McNelly made sure all of his authors were properly motivated and properly informed. Too bad it only went that far, huh?

I know the DE isn't cannon, but I consider it cannon except where Frank contradicts it.

I think the hacks had some 12 year old non English speaking child skim the pictures in the DE and then write them up a summary. That's what they went by.

Me too! The DE is pretty fun to read every now and then. My library has a copy that I check out from time to time.
