Professions of Dedication, Devotion & Love in Dune?

Post by SandChigger »

I just received the following request via feedback mail on HToD:
...can't agree more on the 'new' books. Waste time to read, they can't match the level of thought Frank Herbert portrayed in the originals. Pity, that.

Anywhoo, I was wondering... Is there a scene in one of the books detailing a fremen wedding ceremony with the vows exchanged? I'm looking to get something meaningful from the original series inscribed on my husbands wedding band (yes, we're THAT nerdy) but I can't find the dang scene I think I remember.

Anyways, if you have any suggestions I would be appreciative.

Thanks!
Anyone remember anything of the sort they're talking about? Or have any other suggestions?

In DM Paul calls Chani, "Sihaya, my desert springtime"...
...and I can't think of anything else right now.

Slightly relevant: when Paul and Chani first meet, he asks her to hold his water rings and afterwards deduces that this is a courtship ritual. Not really a profession of dedication though...

Maybe she'll end up having to put something together. (A personal touch like that might make it more special... she did say they were both nerds, after all. :) )

Something like "I am your Shihaya, your desert springtime, and the holder of your water rings"?

Or maybe something more... earthy?

"You're my big worm, that I ride into the sand."

OK, well, maybe not... :?

(I had a follow-up to my reply; it's not like she needs it tomorrow, they've got a few months to go.)

I got nothin'. There's the bit between Alia & Ghanima about marrying Farad'n 'in full Fremen costume, complete with crysknife,' but I can't remember anything about vows or the ceremony. Come to think of it, I don't think anyone gets married in all the Dune books. Not much peripheral lovemaking either.

Some of the poems/songs are nice
A little action between Paul & Chani, I doubt "Woman is thy field" is appropriate
Some of the stuff between Leto & Ghani, Duncan & Murbella could be close
The God Emperor is all upside down over Hwi but aside from A short quote or two, not a lot there

A lot like life; there's lots of love around but it's still a rare commodity.

"I see us giving love to each other in a time of quiet between storms. It's what we were meant to do."
Leto II is gone for good, except for OM. The "pearl" was just that; a miniscule portion of what Leto was, and not a compressed version of the whole. The pearl that the worms have do not make them Leto, or in any way similar to him.

Maybe something from Heretics where they talk about love being powerful.

Its on the tip of my brain, something in the original that was in chakobsa... ARRRGH! something along the lines of God created Arrakis to train the faithful...

Anything to do with water rings of course.

Where I am flame Be thou the coals Where I am dew Be thou the water...that wording is not quite right, I don't have a searchable copy of Dune here.
But it was at Jamis' death ceremony, wasn't it, in the Cave of Birds?

I've always liked that.

In an abrupt and profound silence, Chani turned, stared at Paul. Presently she said: "Where I am flame be thou the coals. Where I am dew be thou the water."

"Bi-lal kaifa," intoned the troop.
That's from Ch.34. :)

In GEoD Leto talks about his wedding to Ghanima and his preperations for his wedding with Hwi.
