Is Duncan of Asian decent?

Post by Toledo666 »

For as many years as I've been reading the Dune series, I'd never noticed before a strange reference in Dune Messiah, to Duncan having an "epicanthic fold". Does this mean that Duncan was Asian?

Welcome to the forums, if you search around we've actually had an extensive discussion on this very topic. Maybe someone will help me out and post a link to that discussion?

I'm sure Duncan was a decent chap :)
Only the books written by Frank Herbert are canon.

I suppose I should now picture Duncan as Chow Yun-Fat.

Hmmm.... I always imagined him to be of African -or maybe middle eastern- descent.

Can't help it ... that was the mental image I formed when first reading Dune and it stuck.

I've never really pictured characters that clearly, maybe I'm just lazy?

I don't either unless the author really drills it into your head what they look like.

For instance, Paul is an aquiline nose, Gurney is an inkvine scar, Duncan is goat hair, Thufir is red lips, Jessica is bronze hair, Stilgar is a beard, etc...

Yeah, I get general details like that in my mind, but the characters always remain as a general sketch rather than a detailed picture.

That is what usually happens to me too ... Duncan as Tony Curtis was the weird exception. It might have to do with a re-run of The Persuaders on TV at the same time ... I love the opening theme music of that series.

Really? Tony Curtis? I thought you guys were kidding about that, too.

The goat hair is the first thing I think about, and I picture a Harrison Ford with quasi Asian features. I expect that role to be played by someone that looks like a movie star.

What kind of features does a small Asian have?

There are four parts to a small Asian's features. Also, a Spice Beer is four parts Melgenge, no wonder he got drunk.

I like to picture Duncan as a figure skater. He wears like a white outfit, and he does interpretive ice dances of my life's journey.
