Not everybody knows what T(A)U is.

It's The (Almost) Undeleted, Omphalos' science-fiction site.

I thought I had a tentative answer to this one this evening.

The Form IV verbal noun is formed by prefixing 'i- to a root and placing a long â after the second literal. For K - T - B, this would give 'iktâb, meaning "causing to write; dictation". So if there were a root like D - W - L, the verbal noun would be 'idwâl, which would just need the adjective-forming suffix to give 'Idwâlî or something passably close enough to Iduali.

There is in fact a verb dâla (root D - W - L). Its Form IV verbal noun would mean "giving ascendancy to, making victorious, letting triumph, granting victory; replacing, exchanging, substituting." No real connection with "water insects", but who can account for the development of new meanings?

The problem, though, is the presence of that W in the middle makes it a hollow verb, which means the form of the verbal noun is slightly different than the pattern I gave above: 'idâla(h). If we try to add the suffix to that, we'll get 'idâlatî (Idalati), which is nothing at all like what we want.

Ah well. ;)

Yeah, pretty much. Root K-T-B "write" is kind-of the standard used by all the grammarians. A happy coincidence.
