Exciting book find, with a sad ending

Post by Spicelon »

Was in St. Louis over the weekend cleaning out my mom's house. (mom is
old and has dementia and lives with my sister, so it's time to get the house
on the market). Anyway, I have lots of books in boxes that have been
there for decades - literally. Finally got to the bottom of the stack, but
unfortunately the bottom boxes had some water damage. So what did I find
in the very last box I went through? My 23 year old copy of the Dune
Encyclopedia. Sigh. It's damaged. The book was in the box spine up, but
the outer edge of the pages was resting on the bottom of the box. Kind of
moldy and swollen. It's readable though. So there's my bittersweet
moment of the day.

:(
Poop is funny.
MetaCugel8262 is not.

FAN-tastic.

Atleast you've got it, however damaged.

I've had some success in restoring old books from the late 1800's,
but just rebinding. Water damage and swollen pages are a bitch,
and I'm assuming that's early 1980s paper, thick and porous.

I've haven't thought about that it awhile, I'm sure there's people
out there with ideas on restoration ....

I wondered where you were all weekend.

Sucks about the book, dude. Maybe it can be saved.

He seems more like a middle child to me.

Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

There's an almost heart warming scene in Dreamer of Dune where
Frank is coaching Brian on some book, I guess the insurance humor
book. Brian is at Frank's house with the family, in Frank's office
working, and his girl starts running around yelling. Frank tells her
to be quiet, her daddy's writing.

I guess that's the part where the lightbulb pops over Brian's head
and he gets all misty-eyed and smiles a wistful smile ....

... and scribbles about it that night in his "journal"...

Dear Diary...

Today my father Frank Herbert told one of my girls ... I forget her name ... the one named after the wine! ... to be quiet while I was working on the book.

He LOVES me, he really REALLY LOVES ME!
