Games imitating literature

Remind anyone of anything?? ;)

True.

But I was thinking more "The shield turns the fast blow, admits the slow kindjal!"

Blizzard is pretty open about using sci-fi or other tropes in their work - or paying homage, depending on how you look at it.
In Starcraft I, desert levels sometimes had skeletons of huge worms sticking through the surface, too...

You're right, it does sound rather Dune-ish. But I agree with Lundse, the creators of Starcraft do borrow rather liberally from science fiction. But unlike some really bad writers we know, they have creatively innovated their own story from the many sources where they find inspiration.

As an aside, anyone else notice the new transforming terran unit is a Macross homage to the transforming valkyrie fighters? That new massive ground unit is also more than a little reminiscent of the Destroid Monster from Macross. Isn't surprising, since the terran cruiser in the first game was very Macross/Yamato-inspired :)

On STARCRAFT refrences

Thgey always make a lot of refrences, rather than adding to the actual plot.

Like the new Banshee unit, or how the firebats would say 'I would like to sell you propane and propane exessories.'

I like the self-referential things they'd do, like if you clicked a zillion times on an observer, you'd hear Adria from diablo saying "I sense a soul in search of answers".

Oh, I love those little speech cues from the Starcraft units.

Terran Firebat
"I love the smell of napalm"

Terran Medic
"His EKG is flatlining, get me a defib fast!
Clear.....PZZT!
He’s dead Jim.
"

Terran Dropship
"In case of a water landing, you may be used as a floatation device.
"

Protoss Dragoon
"Drop your weapons, you have 15 seconds to comply.
5,4,3,2,1, FOOM!
"

Protoss High Templar
"Your thoughts betray you.
I see you have an appetite for destruction.
And you learn to use your illusions.
But I find your lack of control disturbing
"
