Frank Herbert Interviews

Post by SandRider »

Referring this to Omph & Freak, mainly, but to anyone else as well -

I've found four (4) interviews with Frank posted online :

1) McNelly 1969
2) Vertex 1973
3) Vertex 1977
4) Plowboy / Mother Earth News 1981

In references elsewhere to interviews with Frank, I've found only these four listed.

Are these four the only interviews currently available online ?

Were there other interviews I can't find references to ?

(not counting the video, or the Q&As with Lynch, I mean printed interviews ....)

There are also so me medium length interviews of him in periodicals like Starlog and Cinema Fantiastique that I have not gotten up yet. There is also an interview with Waldenbooks that Lynch was there for that I have too. It takes up two sides of one tape, and is about an hour long.

Take a look here and scroll down to the interview section. That is everything electronic that I have found.

http://bb.solahpmo.com/viewtopic.php?t=4

As for long format interviews about him as an author, there is a Dutch interview that I have some info on but I have never seen before. Other than that, that's it.

But...I just got a case in Fullerton, CA, and when I have to start going down there to handle it Im going to add a few days and visit the Herbert Archives at UC Fullerton. Im told that there are many more interviews there. If so Ill copy them and post them at T(A)U.

I've seen your list at T(A)U - after I had found the Four - had high hopes
there were more - are the magazine interviews available online ? I've
not found them in a search, but then haven't those keywords, either....

I'd really like to find a lot more material like the McNelly Interview -
from the late sixties and early seventies. Just Frank talking. Do you
know if there are any transcripts of any of the talks he gave at
universities in the Fullerton Archive ?

{edit - I didn't see the last two lines of your post before I started
writing - I do that alot - overlook stuff at the bottom that's blurring
off into the sigs......}

1) Here is a link to the interview I mentioned above. I will order it one of these days. Turns out its a British interview in a Dutch magazine. Maybe someone wants to get it from a local library for us?

http://www.springerlink.com/content/f860223404202734/

2) Here is some info about a Herbert interview in an Australian SF magazine. I have tried several times but have never been able to get the publisher to respond to me. Maybe someone who is Down Under wants to take a crack at finding this?

http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~geoffm/sf/9.shtml

3) And then there is the Waldentapes interview. I have a copy of it but have not transcribed it yet.

4) There are supposedly a bunch of interviews by Touponce, McNelly, and O'Relley in the archives that have never been published. The link here also indicates that there is an interview by Hayakawa, but I have spoken with the curator on the phone and she says that there are definitely more than that one. (I note that Herbert references a "Hayakawa" in the McNelly interview).

5) There is a rumor of a book written for a publisher called Borgo by Harrold Lee Prosser that was retruned to the author when the publisher failed. I have tried for years to find Prosser but have had no luck. The old publisher of Borgo, Robert Reginald, told me in an e-mail about the book that Prosser in fact interviewed Herbert very close to his death. The suspicion is that Prosser is dead too, so I have tried to find either him or his estate's administrator. He has connections to Missouri and New Mexico, but that is as close as I have been able to get so far.

Other than what is posted on my site, these are the only leads I have, besides ten or eleven issues of film magazines where they talk to Herbert about the '84 movie, and the few things that can be found on You Tube.

Actually, I thought there was one other thing, but Im not finding it in my Herbrt Interview bookmark list. Let me look around a bit and see if anything else is floating around.

I'd suppose the HLP would control the publication of that material ?

Who would authorize "release" or access by scholars ? What would happen if someone got access thru the
university, copied and posted them on the net, on a non-commercial site like this ?

{I'm back to the Christopher Tolkien thing - "What if" Frank's family had had the understanding and respect of his work ? All his interviews, notes, etc would be seen as a part of Literary History.....}

Its in a public archive, but I suppose the ultimate holder would be the organization or person who did the interview. Its his product, not the HLP's.

Chig, is this something you can read?

Whups! Maybe that is not what that says. Not too clear, but I guess its an interview of Hayakawa by Herbert. Hayakawa was a state senator here in CA a long time ago.

Omph, what New Mexico connections? I know a few of the librarians at NM State, might be able to do some digging for you with some more details and take advantage of my student status and access to multiple data bases and libraries.

What does it say at the bottom about an interview?
Aye, it be in the local parlance. ;)

It's evidently an interview of FH by Tetsu Yano, who was the translator of the Dune books until he died a few years back. Title of the interview is "I am a commentator on the present" (Watasi wa genzai no komenteitaa na no desu). Published in S-F Magazine 1985/2 No.322

I'll get with Teg and see if we can find it somewhere. ;)

Thanks, Chig! I'd love to add something about it to the list on T(A)U. It was published right before his death, too. Hopefully its got somehting of interest in it.

Ill have to look when I get home to find out for sure, Rob, but IIRC Prosser has a shelf dedicated to him as a collection, I think at NM State, and was a teacher briefly at another local college. Ill look when I get home and post the details, because I obviously dont remember them all now. Thanks!

Awesome!

(Maybe you will see some of Kevin's "editing" amongst Frank's papers  ).

I doubt this one has ever been transcribed, but it's a pretty good read. It's from Marvel Comics' short-lived Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction (issue #3, May of 1975); the blurb for the FH interview is in the lower-left corner.

I do own it ... I'm a Marvel Zombie when I'm not busy arguing the finer points of Kevin J. Anderson's lack of talent.

I've never even used the scanner settings on my printer; I suppose I could give it a shot.

Nice, should be interesting. A pretty important stop on any Herbertarian Hajj - I wonder if they get many pilgrim visits... :P
