Halloween
Do y'all celebrate?
My kids live for this.
I'm thinking of being a pirate if I can gather enough money for a decent costume. Maybe if I'm a pirate every year, one day I will achieve full pirate regalia and teach Pastafarianism. (It is considered disrespectfull to teach the ways of the Flying Spaghetti Monster while not wearing full pirate regalia.)

Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

The Japanese festival for the return of the dead is in August. (It's called Obon.) But no one dresses up for it. I hear in some areas of some of the bigger cities (at least Tokyo and Yokohama), some people do (have done in the past?) trick-or-treat for the kids at Halloween. (Teg's the one with sprogs, and can answer better than I.)
I've been to a few great costume parties over here over the years. (Mostly held by foreigners or Japanese who had lived abroad.) I guess that's what I miss most about this particular holiday. One a long time ago was held in an old temple in Tokyo as a charity event; was really spooky.
Is it still as popular across the country as it used to be? Since I haven't been home at the end of October in years, I have no idea how big a deal it is in my hometown. (They were already putting out the decorations and candy in the stores before I left, so I guess some people still do it.)

Some of the best Halloween parties I've been to were for an AOL local singles chat room.
My wife was pregnant twice durring ; the first time her initial due date was the 25th of December so we went as Joseph, the next we were the Pope and a nun.
Here's a few pictures of the kids, my Pope costume was similar but with much more gold glitter glue:

Ah, I suspect you're a orthodox Pastafarian. I'm reformed; we *can* wear pirate gear, but ghost, Spiderman or Indiana Jones is also acceptable. If done tastefully.Freakzilla wrote:Maybe if I'm a pirate every year, one day I will achieve full pirate regalia and teach Pastafarianism. We don't have halloween here ... fortunately. I have a sincere dislike of ALL these "festivities" when I am burning up inside with a severe depression. Same goes for christmas, birthdays, anniversaries ... blegh!

on Halloween
I wish I had something to live for...
Anyway, I'm gonna take my Clint Eastwood poncho (And hat) and take a mask and go as "The Ghoul with no name."
It'll complement last year's "Mexican vampire."

I passed a Denny's this morning on the way to work and noticed that they had little orange jack-o-lanterns hanging from the ceiling inside.
Forgot to mention that people know about the holiday here and some places decorate for it. (Same with Xmas and Easter, not so much for Thanksgiving.) They just don't do the other stuff.
Commercialism...harrumph!

Double post!
I knew I could find some old pix if I tried hard enough.
So...keep in mind that I've always kinda been into kosu-pure...even before they had that word for it.
My two favorite get-ups ever.
This next is from a friend. I naturally would never do this to an animal.

But of course.Omphalos wrote:Are both of those ones up top you, Chig?
The geisha is probably from the last Halloween party I went to in the States before coming over here. Probably '85 or '86? (I played with the color, naturally. The real pic isn't that faded. Yet.)
And the devil is probably from the last Halloween party I've been to, period, when I still lived in Tsukuba, so '92 or '93? (A friend snapped it before we headed out. There was a bunch of clothes hanging on a bar behind me, so I blurred them out. The shiny stuff is the flash reflecting off the clear plastic bags over some stuff that had been to the cleaners. Thought it looked kinda neat, so I left it in. )
Wow...has it really been fifteen years since I've been to a Halloween party? Dayum.

Is that from when you were young, in the days before colour was invented? Did you have to stand still for half an hour while that photo was taken?SandChigger wrote:Double post!

Teg: Anton LaWho?
AToE: You die.
(Actually, I knew his mother back in the day....)
GP: Ah, shaddup, Vulcan.
Sloey: Don't mention hats, Squirt. Freak hates 'em, might "do a Byron" on ya!
CL: No, Luv, it was more like half a day. That thing on me bum is actually a colostomy bag. As you can see, I was even more full of shit back when I was your age.
Nyah to you all!
