Finished Harry Potter
and I'm not ashamed. No, it certainly wasn't the best or most entertaining
thing I've ever read, but it was much better than I thought it'd be. Like many
experienced fiction readers who had read good scifi/fantasy well before this
ever came out, I was skeptical of these books. Part of it is my almost always
initial reaction to anything garnering the level of hype these books get: It's
super popular, people in general are stupid, so it must suck. I was wrong,
they don't suck.
One thing I've found is that any book that is a "fast" read usually means, to
me at least, that it's short on depth or complexity but long on story. I would
certainly say that about these books. Any hoo, just my initial $0.02.

I'm not opposed to popular books, just opposed to really popular books that leave me wondering why they are so popular. I suppose we can't all like what's popular, so at the very least I guess that explains why I don't read Harry Potter
I'm just glad Lord of the Rings was put back on the map, both in the literary world and in film. It acts as a much needed counter against the Harry Potter franchise, which unleashes itself as a disease upon mankind every few years, much like Tom Cruise

The last two books were shitty, even for children's books.
I started reading the series when I was 11, so I had to finish when the last book came out last summer.
Total disappointment.

You aren't thinking or really existing unless you're willing to risk even your own sanity in the judgment of your existence.

What, "Harry likes sucking cocks"*200?Phaedrus wrote:Only 800 words, though
GP, I'm with ya there. I remember being in highschool and hearing friends talk about the first one(s?) and it sounded awfully shitty and childish even then. Something about the taste of ear-wax.
All I can say is, they mess your brain. As proof I'll bring the case of A, a friend of mine, son of Jew immigrants from Russia who's always been secular, and later when he matured and to ctually think about it, agnostic(God knows why he's been with me through both a religeous elementry and high schools and not gone to a secular one).
Now the loon is in a Yeshiva for the last 4 years or so. I blame Harry.
In memory of Perach, who suffered and died needlessly.
I wish I could have been with you that one last time.

I've read them all too. Overall I liked them, they were a good, fun read. Nothing that made my brain hurt though. I read the first 4 around middle school, then I quit reading them because Harry Potter wasn't very cool anymore. I read the rest when the 5th movie came out. I wanted to watch the movie, but I decided to read the book first so I didn't experience War of the Worlds syndrome again.
To explain said syndrome, that is the name I chose to describe when seeing a movie first ruins the book. I'm sure you can guess which movie made me first realize that. I can't bring myself to touch War of the Worlds to read. Although technically I did touch it when I was reading The Time Machine, since it was a 2-in-1 book. In conclusion, I hate that movie.

You mean the Spielberg ABOMINATION with the nekkid humpbutt aliens, the loony Scientology Preacherman and that nasty little blonde childbint that screamed at 150 dB...right?Illogical Banana wrote:In conclusion, I hate that movie.

That is the one. It makes it even worse that I hear the book is actually good, but I can't help but think of those things now.SandChigger wrote: You mean the Spielberg ABOMINATION with the nekkid humpbutt aliens, the loony Scientology Preacherman and that nasty little blonde childbint that screamed at 150 dB...right?

I have also read them, all seven of them and I enjoyed them.
Like Illogical Banana said they were a fun quick read with no literary asperations. They were writen as entertainment and that is the way people should take them.
Personally I have little patience with people who condem books
without reading or at least trying to read them. Yes Harry Potter was
probably hyped up alot more than it deserved but read it dirst then if you don't like it you can condemn it to hell and back.
If it's not the kind of book you like to read then don't read it but if you don't read it you have no real basis for critiqueing it.

couldn't read these at all. i was forced against my will to watch the films, which made things even worse.
I reccomend a red of the Books of Magic graphic novels by Neil Gaiman, from which Harry Potter was blatantly ripped off (yes, ok Tim Hunter is a rip off of Maerlyn from the Arthurian legends, but isn't every wizard?)
