Gaiman anyone?

Post by Spicelon »

I'm a total Gaiman n00b, and I recently had Neverwhere shoved into my hands. Opinions on what I can expect? Anyone?

Its an odd story, but Gaiman is a talented author. If you are not so much into fantasy, it may not be your cup of tea. My personal favorite (after Sandman, which says a lot because I generally am not a fan of graphic novels) is American Gods. That book was awesome.

Of course, you should never refuse to read a book, IMHO, especially if you have no idea what the author is like. Why dont you read it and tell us what you think?

I like teh fantasy!

Yeah, it's in the stack. I still need to sludge through the rest of the Harry Potter books, which my daughter finally convinced me to read.

Wasn't it your review on Shitworms of Bafoon that stated otherwise? I seem to recall someone saying he just couldn't read it. :P

Yeah but he gave it a try. He just didn't see any point in slogging through the rest of the crap.

I chose not to read it before it was even published based on being burned seven times previously.

I read Neverwhere a few years ago, I can't remember what it was about, but I remember it was good. My favorites are American Gods and Anansi Boys.

Last year I read American Gods, Neverwhere, and Anansi Boys, in that order. Enjoyed all of them.

(Had some good belly laughs out of the last one especially. ;) )

I love anything that guy writes from kids books to novels (except Beowulf, though it's my understanding that it's not quite what he was hoping for either.). Neverwhere is a great read and is much better than the BBC series it's based on.

Thanks for the replies. Upon further review I HAVE read Gaiman, but that was Good Omens, and I came to that through co-writer Pratchett, who I have a man-crush on. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure at the time that I didn't even realize it was co-authored. For what I think are OBVIOUS reasons, I am a bit leary of co-authored works. I am also leary of anyone who doesn't at least capitalize ONE word every sentence.

Q: Firefox says I have not spelled "leary" right, but I don't like any of the choices it gives me - what to do? When in doubt I usually just double every letter, JUST IBN CASE!

(I usually find EE works nicely: leery. ;)

You ever had people look at you funny when you use that word? I have.

Ever use this one: jakey? :) )

I don't know if that's the origin of the word we used, but for us it meant not having taken enough care when getting dressed...like with your shirttails not properly tucked into your trousers...or clothes all wrinkly...or, if you're wearing a tie, with it not properly tightened and with the top button undone...jakey.

Mum was always saying, "I knew I should have named you Jake instead of Jeff!" :)

Aha, that sounds like a plausible origin. It's just that the meaning has been expanded somewhat, vernacularly, at least in the west of Scotland.

I remember a few years back reading an interview where Gaiman claims to be a very big fan of the original Dune series.

He is. I think he MC'ed some kind of event last year where FH received some type of posthumous award.

I just received The Eternals for a gift and can't wait to read it.
