This totally sucks, hope his road goes smooth. Going to miss more Culture books!

EDIT: I wonder how long he has known, the last 2 culture books had very heavy death/afterlife themes which make more sense now if he was contemplating his own exit.

That is sad to hear.

There must be something perverse in me though, because I've noticed that I enjoy books more after the authors are dead. Guess I'll be trying all those Culture novels sooner than I thought.

Very sad and shocking, indeed. Such a great talent.

Apparently he's only known it for a couple of months.

I first thought something might be wrong when I developed a sore back in late January, but put this down to the fact I'd started writing at the beginning of the month and so was crouched over a keyboard all day. When it hadn't gone away by mid-February, I went to my GP, who spotted that I had jaundice. Blood tests, an ultrasound scan and then a CT scan revealed the full extent of the grisly truth by the start of March.

By the way, i can only hope the same thing doesn't happen to George R.R. Martin.

Today is a sad day for science fiction and literature. :(

Iain Banks left the world a richer place than he found it. No more can be asked of any writer.

Deeply saddening. He was truly a great writer, whose books were thought provoking, and fun to read. He will be missed.

Damn.

Man, the greats of the genre are really going --Banks, Bradbury, Farmer, Clarke, etc. ...hopefully some new SF authors can fill their shoes.

This article is a nice one about Banks, btw.
