A long time apart.... And a Favour

Post by loremaster »

Afternoon/Evening/Other Suitable Daily Milestone everyone.

I appreciate I haven't been around for years now. And I guess we could all make excuses, but i shaln't. I used to be part of this forum, and DumbHovels.com before that. and even Back to Dreamers of Dune in the distant days of yore, which could only be accessed by Dial-Up.

Anyway. I sort of need a favour. Maybe some of you remember me, maybe you dont. I dont recognise many names here now (though I still lurk to an unhealthy degree).

I'm getting married in the summer. I'm 26. We've been together 8 years, and while some older cynics do not believe it, It really is one of those fairytale "as soon as I saw" moments, and I've never looked back.
She's a BEAUTIFUL (seriously, well out of my league) lady. And to a great extend we're one of those cliche saccharine couples. Life really is perfect.

Anyway, im not rambling all this to show off, (but while we're on it....NYAH NYAH NYAH!). I need a couple of good wedding readings for our ceremony in the summer. Obviously being an old school OH We're both against religious quotations. We've checked hundreds of websites and books on the idea, but nothing seems to quite fit the childish, fun atmosphere we think the wedding is going to have. (Our Cake has Mario and Princess on top, we're having a small intimate ceremony of largely family and close friends we've all known for years, followed by the biggest party you can concieve with everyone we've ever met in the evening. Salsa class ice-breaker, live band, big knees up. :-).)

Right, point is:

People on this forum are amongst the widest read and most intelligent I know (collectively, is sloe man still about?). Can anyone think of a passage (or several) which will serve as readings for a very relaxed, fun, and upbeat ceremony. We're not looking for something deep, like quotes from the prophet. Or about triumph through adversity, We want something light and lifting. I've been looking for ideas from things like Winnie the Pooh or Wizard of Oz, for example. But nothing seems to quite fit. Or song lyrics. Ideally something recogniseable but not traditionally associated with weddings. First place to anything by Frank himself! :-)

And since we're on it, a bit of wedding trivia: We have four science degrees between two of us (3 B.Sc and an M.Sc) - and our breakfast tables are the following:

Roentgen, Fleming, Newton, Archimedes, Galvani.

Can anyone pick out the link between them? (To the best of our knowledge, and a tad anecdotally, but consider yourselves a trial, we want to see if people will recognise it).

Thanks in anticipation.

Adam

Well congrats first of all !
I got married too last year to a girl that I would have said would not even have looked at me if I'd been asked before so I kinda know the feeling :)

We didn't have time to have vows, we went for the civil typicals, but I do like your idea nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure anything by Frank about Beverly would sound appropriate though.

nb :
I'll think about your riddle if you promise to show us pictures of the cake :)

Congrats. I think I do remember the name.

I would suggest writing something of your own.

But I have several poetry books that I'll look thru.

And yes of course --- we must see pics.

Hey buddy, maybe you should get off your high horse.

How's that for a quote for ya, since no one else has suggested anything.

Lore just ignore whoever he is, he's even given me the creeps before which if you remember me takes a bit of doing.

Don't know what his problem is or why he's claiming to be soleman now when he's denied it for so long.

Hah, you can change your name....

We've gone with

"Marriage joins":

Marriage is a commitment to life, the best that two people can find and bring out in each other. It offers opportunities for sharing and growth that no other relationship can equal. It is a physical and an emotional joining that is promised for a lifetime.

Within the circle of its love, marriage encompasses all of life's most important relationships. A wife and a husband are each other's best friend, confidant, lover, teacher, listener, and critic. And there may come times when one partner is heartbroken or ailing, and the love of the other may resemble the tender caring of a parent for a child.

Marriage deepens and enriches every facet of life. Happiness is fuller, memories are fresher, commitment is stronger, even anger is felt more strongly, and passes away more quickly.

Marriage understands and forgives the mistakes life is unable to avoid. It encourages and nurtures new life, new experiences, and new ways of expressing a love that is deeper than life.

When two people pledge their love and care for each other in marriage, they create a spirit unique unto themselves which binds them closer than any spoken or written words. Marriage is a promise, a potential made in the hearts of two people who love each other and takes a lifetime to fulfil.

and one called Today I married my best friend, but i cannot remember what it actually said.

Answers to last weeks quiz - All those scientists (anecdotally) discovered their most famous contributions by accident - archimedes in the bath, newton when he was hit by an apple, galvani when he touched a frogs leg with two different metal tools, fleming because he didnt clean up spillages in his lab, and roentgen who discovered the useful application of X-rays by accident.

Wish me luck!
