MetaCugel8262 wrote:Melodic Imitation is a term that covers various genres of non-classical music which are primarily characterised by the dominance of a single strong melody line. Rhythm, tempo and beat are subordinate to the melody line or tune, which is generally easily memorable, and followed without great difficulty. Melodic music is found in all parts of the world, overlapping many genres, and may be performed by a singer or orchestra, or a combination of the two.

The fundamental principles and structural norms of melodic music were established in what is sometimes known as the Common practice period, dating from the 18th century to the early 20th century. Melodic music tends to have a consistent metre, pulse and tempo, things that are far less emphasised in contemporary music.

In the west, melodic music has developed largely from folk song sources, and been heavily influenced by classical music in its development and orchestration. In many areas the border line between classical and melodic popular music is imprecise. Opera is generally considered to be a classical form. The lighter operetta is considered borderline, whilst stage and film musicals and musical comedy are firmly placed in the popular melodic category. The reasons for much of this are largely historical.

Other major categories of melodic music include music hall and vaudeville, which, along with the ballad, grew out of European folk music. Orchestral dance music developed from localised forms such as the jig, polka and waltz, but with the admixture of Latin American, blues and ragtime influences, it diversified into countless sub-genres such as big band, cabaret and Swing. More specialised forms of melodic music include military music and religious music.

Traditional pop music overlaps a number of these categories: big band music and musical comedy, for example, are closely allied to traditional pop.

This doesn't in any way state that classical music is non rhythmic.

The problem here is that you're confusing what a genre's main focus is with what it "contains". You cannot say that a genre is not rhythmic because it's main focus is on melody - you cannot say that a genre is non melodic because it's main focus is on rhythm.

Rhythm is made up of sounds and silences. These sound and silences are put together to form a patterns of sounds which are repeated to create a rhythm. A rhythm has a steady beat, but it may also have different kinds of beats. Some beats may be stronger, longer, shorter or softer than others. In a single piece of music, a composer can use many different rhythms.
 Yes, this is correct - and it applies to classical music fully.

That's the whole point and the criticism of monolithic or mono thought(PC for short), all music ultimately has both elements, but one or the other is the root and dominate form.

And just to have some fun with this whole "rhythmic = polytheism, melodic = monotheism" idea of yours - consider this.

Indian music takes melody further than western classical music, and while yes they have some monotheism in certain of their religions (why do you keep talking about India as if it were one unified culture/religion by the way? It's enormously diverse, with everything from polytheism in the form of panentheism (Hindus), to straight up monotheism (Jains, Sikhs) to one of the world's only atheist religions, Buddhism), they also have a huge amount of polytheist views.

So if melody is a monotheist thing, shouldn't the purely monotheistic europeans have come up with the most advanced melodies? (Not counting the Catholics, that's a polytheistic religion if I've ever seen one!).

Oh really? Than answer this is: when the going gets tough and certain people don't like what they hear, the small minded suddenly like censorship.

Made my last post before seeing this one.

You're saying this now that I've proven to you, but before this you were speaking in absolutes over and over saying that classical music is not rhythmic. So either you're really not good at conveying what you mean, or you're backpedalling at this point..

Who brought up censorship? It's unclear who you're replying to in this statement.

You're not being censored. However you are making thinly veiled personal insults.

I'm just going to let you too ridigly stick to your mental prison and never think outside your comfy cage. At some point it's like, why bother? But I have enjoyed this and will be back for more later. :D

Yes, and mine was a response to one you made, so it went around back to where it came from.

I'm not in any mental prison - you're the one that was speaking in absolutes about a subject where absolutes don't apply, calling classical music non-rhythmic just because it has a little more focus on melody than rhythm. That to me seems like limited thinking.

And your post about censorship makes no sense. Nobody wants to censor you here. Nobody. I debate with you and you go into full defense mode accusing me of wanting to censor you when I've made absolutely no statements hinting or overtly about this?

Seems to me like you've resorted to avoiding the subjects you yourself brought to the table (and unfounded insults) simply because you don't seem to be able to debate them. Saying "no, you're wrong." with no evidence or logic to back up why you think I'm wrong isn't debating, it's being stubborn and just spouting whatever you can to make it apear that you are debating.

:D This is fun though. I haven't had epic one-sided debates like this since back in the day when I was a member at DN!

Yes, when the going get's tough, the unimagination suddenly become school marms and start getting all uptight over spelling, rules and other ultimately meaningless trivialities. :D

No, in this discussion the "quote button" would be quite helpful if you started using it, otherwise it is very unclear who you are responding to in certain posts, like that one about censorship (and even the one where you say who you were responding to, I presume myself, even though I never brought up censorship because you said "you" and I was the one who asked you who you were talking to...).

That's not trivial, it helps with clarity when talking to someone as all over the place as you.

And going gets tough? I brought up several actual arguments to your statements, you have not debated back a single one of them. You either just repeat "no, you're wrong, because I say so" or you change the subject entirely.

So why did you think anyone (including myself obviously) wanted to censor you? Seems to be a completely unfounded accusation.

 Good song, but what "eternity" thing are you responding to? You seem to be responding to something that wasn't there to respond to!

What about the censorship thing? I'm seriously curious as to what I could have possibly said to make you think that.
