Battle of Los Angeles, was a fun flick


Started watching a French movie called "A Prophet" about a guy in prison but my wife came downstairs and we are watching V, lol.

The last movies I saw at the theater were 'Megamind' and 'RED'.
The last movie I saw (period) was Letters to Juliett. It's a total chick-flic, but I love it.

BTW, you need to distinguish between "Battle:LA" and "Battle of Los Angeles".

The first one is a blockbuster movie out this month. The second one is a B- or C-grade Syfy movie that was broadcast the day after the movie came out. The alien ships looked really similar, too. Except not as good.

Oh, I also want to see the Red Riding Hood that's coming out. The girl stared in Letters to Juliett and Billy Burke is also in it.

I really need to finish watching Red Cliff.

I watched The Fourth Kind a week or so ago, kinda creepy.

Grown Ups was funny.

Watched Mr Brooks last night. Enjoyed Costner and Hurt's performances.

Watching Mrs Brown with Billy Connolly at the moment.

Still trying to finish up "A prophet" but hard to get time away from the kids. It's not exactly a family friendly movie.

The US theatrical cut was unsatisfying to me, however, and I preferred the wonky, longer cut because I was watching it for the characters. I don't know if it would be any good, though, for a person that wasn't already into that story. And some of it is just stupid as hell, to be honest. John Woo kind of blows.

That said, I loved "Red Cliff."

I picked up Gettysburg and Caddyshack from the $5 bin at Walmart last week.

gettsyburg is very good,if you can get past Martin Sheen's horrible accent as Robert E. Lee.
Tom Berenger's Genrl Longstreet is spot-on, as is Sam Elliot as the Federal Cavalry guy whose name escapes me right now ...
(altho he chews it up a bit with the "High ground!" lines)

this is the movie adaption of the Killer Angels .... also note Stephen Lang as Genrl Pickett,
then watch him as Thomas Jackson in Gods&Generals ... man's phenomenal ....

the portrayal of the British observer Col Freemantle is also very accurate - notice the scene where
he emerges from his tent with a tea cup in hand and the ensuing conversation with Longstreet ...
this scene is in complete agreement with both Freemantle's and Longstreet's memoirs ...

of great value at encampments, and often heard, is Genrl Pickett's response to the question
"What IS that smell ?" --- "That sir, would be me." (cf the General Pickett School Of Campaigning: Look Good, Smell Good)

historically accurate, and very well done large scenes by hundreds of living history re-enactors, this movie is almost good enough to
use as a reference; the only drawback I find is that, like Frank's work, many of Sharra's political and philosophical asides don't
flow out of the actors mouths as well as they do on the page (C. Thomas Howell as Chamberlin's brother is a good example, altho the
speech by the Irish Sergeant under the tree is wonderful (where the title of "the Killer Angels" comes from))

(also note producer/money-tosser Ted Turner in full regalia during the scene of the musicians performing the Bonnie Blue Flag -
he is sitting in the front row with Lee & Longstreet et al, pounding his saber into the ground with the beat of the music ....)

also, and I've suggested this before, read the "trilogy" of The Killer Angels, Gods & Generals, and The Last Full Measure, not only as
well-above average modern American writing and extremely historically accurate, but also as an example of how a work of Literature
can be expanded and concluded by a son after the passing of the father ...

Well, i saw Battle Los Angeles the other night and guess what? I was VERY dissappointed. Seriously, don't watch it, it's fucking awful. It's boring and full of corny sentimentality and cliche characters and dialogue. The editing and camerawork seems to have been made by a 12 year old. After 50 minutes i just wanted the movie to fucking end.

Someone on Twitter told me last week that it didn't live up to the hype, and that pre-release reviews were only lukewarm at best.

Oh well.

Thought he was definitely better as Pickett. I thought they could have done a lot more with a portrayal of Stonewall Jackson. I definitely liked Gettysburg better than Gods and Generals, overall.

They definitely went for accuracy in Gettysburg and were so faithful to the novel that it caused problems in the adaptation. It seemed like they transcribed the novel and called it a screenplay.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think there's anything wrong with Shaara's speeches, I just don't think it works to take the speech from the novel and have an actor say the whole thing in front of the camera. It's out of proportion, or something. I think an example of a movie that is a great adaptation, and does it right, is "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"

I personally felt that The Killer Angels was a hell of a lot better than Jeff's work. It's nowhere near the disparity between Dune and McDune, of course.
