Post by Omphalos »

The preliminary ballot for the 2011 awards has been published. Here is a link to some info on the process, and the Renovation Worldcon page with the ballot. The con is in Reno, Nevada this year. First round's on the Dukester!

Now, the Hugos, these are the awards that really mean something, right, and aren't just the chummy writers sitting around circle-jerking each other?

They're pretty much all meaningless these days, but the Hugos did last for a long time before becoming crap, and IMHO they are still salvagable. Hope springs eternal, I suppose.

That's sad, and I'm sorry to hear it.

As I'm sure you know, I just enjoy taking potshots at the Sucky Fucky Wanky Assholes, THE "premier professional science fiction writer's association."

"I say K, would you like a more spit or less—and are we going too fast or slow?—as we fluff you up for that gift Nebbie?"

"Why thanks, M, could you maybe go a little slower?"

"Mmm mmmm mmmm mmmm?"

"Oh oh oh oh!"
"Let the dead give water to the dead. As for me, it's NO MORE FUCKING TEARS!"

Holy hell, it's like we're emerging from the Dark Ages here or something. First we get a Texas Roadhouse, now this.

(Actually, Reno is a pretty good convention town; lots of hotels, pretty easy city to navigate, etc.)

I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson
We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert
There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert

I just had a look at the list of Hugo winners, and I must confess after 2000 I've never heard of any of these names...

Is that what it means to get old or is it just me ?

The fourth Harry Potter won the Hugo in 2000, which made it a little less prestigious in the eyes of a lot of serious sci-fi fans, seeing as that was an adolescent fantasy book. I haven't heard of anything nominated for it this year... :( Not really much good SF out lately, all the greats are gone...

Some fantasy has won since then too. Last year's crop of nominees was a mixed bag (I think a zombie steampunk book was up, and as much as I lovelovelove zombie books, c'mon. There's a reason I read them in the bathroom and never bring one in to work).
