You've got a pretty fucked way of trying to start a conversation. Why they hell is everything a question with you? Just say what you mean to say and take a stance on something. No one here is going to write your paper for you.

Are two stories that use similar themes the same ?

Obviously not...

No.

Ghost in the Shell maintained a plot, and only got better as the series went on. (Solid State Society excluded)

The Matrix peaked and then spent an entire movie's worth of screen time wasting plot space and then crash-diving into a Neo saves us all ending that took another entire half of a movie. And I'm one of the very few people who liked the second film.

Next Question: Do Fanboys dream of electric fleshlights?

I must comment, I really liked the second one as well; the third one sucked terribly though.

;

I guess that's my next point ;)

I always considered Matrix to be the Da Vinci Code of scifi, terribly confusing to people who didn't know any better, but for someone who struggled with the multiple layered levels of reality Ph. K. Dick toyed with it was like solving a puzzle with 5 pieces...

Reloaded was fun because it didn't take itself for something it wasn't imo.

The original Matrix had the "Star Wars Maneuver" down....open the story/movie with a powerful action scene, rush through the bare essentials of characterization so that you don't lose your momentum, and let the characters *actions* define them as much as their words. Never let that momentum of awe falter, never get bogged down in the details or lose sight of the arc of the main savior character.

But then they completely dropped the ball later. They also tried to cram too much into too little screen time. A web series would have given them infinitely more flexibility, but it wouldn't have the support of the Hollywood monstrosity that allowed the first film its success. Not to mention, back then, to give them credit, the special effects were quite good. They could just have taken it so much farther than souped-up kung fu and a little (not enough, in the later movies, IMO) gunplay.

The Matrix is another must-watch entry in my list of inspiration films...but more as an example of what to avoid than what to mimic. It did so many things well, and failed all that much more painfully for it. It's a abject lesson for someone like me who at the time those films came out, had most of the same ideas I have today....but lacked the foundation to follow through in the way that I'd like to now. I can use that example to talk myself permanently out of ever entering into major creative endeavors, but if I can escape that trap, they can be very useful as cautionary tails of how not to squander the potential created by the collective imaginations of fans.

Don't call me Shirley.

(It's just not quite the same when you write it.)

I knew that ringed a bell !

And I liked the Matrix, I just regret it didn't go deeper into the theme of reality, when it had so much potential to play with our minds.
I suspect a bit of dumbing down so that it would appeal to a larger audience but then again I am a bit paranoid :)
(a Pare one would say)

I just don't like it when a story gives itself up too easily.

Definitely some similarities, but Ghost in the Shell borrows a lot from other sources as well. Blade Runner is all over that movie.

Generally, the better something is, the more it tends to borrow from *somewhere.* But the truly great find unique ways to surprise you along the way, and create something truly new in the process. There's a ceiling beneath which "good" stories just rehash and regurgitate even if they're well-executed in some respects. I'm still trying to decide if I think that the Matrix really *added* anything to its influences.

It brought karate to metaphysics, it sure didn't expand our understanding of Being.
