I was probably eight when they started me. The biggest thing I remember was hating my 2nd grade teacher and not ever being able to eat anything with red food dye. I still rarely do.

Freak, I've seen both sides of the ADD/ADHD coin.

They tried to diagnose my oldest son with ADHD which he was FAR from hyper (even his third grade teacher said that [he was still in public school at this time]) They were talking about meds and special classes even before the test results came back. We didn't do either with him and he did just fine in school

A few years later I was taking our second son in to see if he had OCD. (he was washing his hands so many times that they were chaffing) The doctor started talking about medication and stuff and I can't remember what I asked her but she said "Well he'll never sit still if you don't get him on something." I stood up and told her we came in for OCD testing not ADHD and we left. I wasn't going to take a child of mine to a doctor who didn't even checked to see what they were seeing the patient for.

Now with my niece and nephew.... medication has made a world of difference. My niece is on Flocalin and my nephew is on Adderall. We have had a hard time getting her meds on the right dosage but once we did it has helped her so much. Both focus better when they are on their meds and her attitude is so much better. It's still not a walk thru the park with them at times but that is another story.
One of my friends, her son was on Ritalin and even he has told me how much better he was able to concentrate in school. He is an adult now and takes no meds.

We took our third son in to be tested for ADD and the doctors that saw him then did a full battery of tests and said he was not ADD but it was just the way he processed his memory. Gave me some suggestions to exercises we could do to help him and no medication was ever mentioned.

So, with the right doctors whose interest is the child's and not to pacify the adults a solution can be found.

And oh, I do appreciate the well wishes my friends. thanks. I will let y'all know what the doctor says about him.

is this the one that burned the bed?

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was in grade-school. They put me on ritalin and I took it until I graduated HS. It made a world of difference for me. Over one quarter I went from F's to A's, and I made and kept friends a lot easier. In my heart I was still as much of an aggressive loner as I am now, but I think because of it I was able to get along really well out in the real world; something I had absolutely no ability to do prior. Of course, I also started therapy at the same time, and that helped a lot too.

Yeah, about three years ago. He got As and Bs last year, it's just his behaviour that's bad.

(Personally, I think he's just acting out because his mother doesn't pay him enough attention (so am I, for that matter) because she sits on Facebook all day and night. Of course SHE can't be a bad mother so the kid must have some behavioural dissorder. This will have the added bonus of him not interupting her Facebook day all the time.)

Farmville?

And did you get a chance to check out that TED Talk video? It has some really refreshing points on how we ought to view the behaviour of children in general.

Eyes: I'd go ahead and advise a little meddlin' here, and ask your niece's parents to ask her prescribing
psychiatrist about switching the Adderall to Vyvanse ... she may be responding well and getting benefit
from Adderall, so the shrinks are reluctant to change what's been working, but if she's also had some of
the side-effects of Adderall, like excessive motor nerve agitation (twitchy feet) or the short term memory
problems, Vyvanse seems to give these people the same type of benefit w/o the over-stimulation of the
nervous system ... it's the "new" drug, the next in the same class as Adderall ... but it is alot more expensive,
so insurance policies and so forth come into play ...

I think the Ritalin age for kids is over now; I'll have to ask my buddy the clinical psychologist, who literally
wrote (some of) the book(s) on all this, and did alot of the last round of chem research on the meds at
A&M .... like I said before, as more is learned about these brain disorder, the meds get more refined ... while
Ritalin does work in a wide range of situations, it's got a lot of side affects, and depending on the specific
disorder, may or may not be the correct med - it can produce observable benefit, but missed alot of the other
symptoms ... if I remember right, ritalin is now mostly prescribed (in fucking HUGE doses) to adults with some
type of specific disorder, not necessarily associated with ADHD ... and also, I think, as therapy for stroke
patients ....

my advice, coming from someone who dealt with this kinda stuff in the seventies and eighties, at the dawn
of medical understanding of these basic brain-development issues, is that if it is economically feasible, listen
and nod at the school's shrinks and take your child to an expert clinical psychologist for evaluation ...

talk to other parents in your area, talk to your family physician, &etc for a referral ... the good ones can
give your kid a standard battery of tests, a couple for the parents, multiple choice about the child's observed
behavior, takes less than an hour; talk with the child and the parents for a little while, start to explain to
you the "statistic" thing I talked about earlier and make a diagnosis by the end of the visit ....

and here's the hard part for people to grasp, esp people who are influenced by their preacher or the loud
mouth right-wing-radio-parrot on the front porch - there is no proof whatsoever that any of these drugs
have serious, permanent bad effects on children (or anybody) ... so if a child scores in the low-moderate
range of the various ADHD symptoms, the clinical psych will often recommend a prescribing psychiatrist
and a med trial ... it's the better safe than sorry thing, which can often be seen by outsiders as Quacks
Stuffing Pills Down Our Children's Throats For Money .... which, of course, could also be the case, but in
my experience, and general observation, I have a hard time buying into such a conspiracy scenario in a
professional field so filled with extremely smart, educated and dedicated people ...

also, the good clinical psychs will tell you the test results, his opinion, and his recommendations -
if you come back with the "I don't want to put my child on drugs" thing, he'll shrug and tell you
that if the child had an infection, you'd give him antibiotics (or maybe not ...), but whatever, that
decision is certainly up to you; the clinical psychologist doesn't get a "referral fee" from the prescribing
shrink, or a kick-back from BigPharma; and I'll guarantee he's got a full slate of patients already ... and
the ones I've known, at this point, really don't seem to have any interest in arguing the point ... they
would never admit it, but their attitude seems to be : here's where your child's brain development is,
to the best of our current knowledge, this is the treatment, to the best of our current knowledge ...
if you don't agree, cool ... GTFO.

and BTW, I don't think we do, but if anybody here is a clinical psych, or Pill-Pushing Shrink,
I'd like to hear their opinion - this is all second-hand conversation stuff, my assumptions and amateur
analysis, and a passing interest in the subject from dealing with it with my boys years & years ago ...

also: I fully support and very much like the idea of keeping this thread going for all our TMI personal medical
stories and discussion of general medical issues ... another 100-page 2000+ post thread is certainly welcome,
in my opinion .... no fucking talk of the goddamn Medical System, "HealthCare" debate, or any of that bullshit,
tho ... keep all that in POLITICS! .....

We've seen the specialist and right now they are going to keep him on supression antibiotics for a month and they are also going to preform a procedure to see if there is anything going on that would be cause this. Don't know when it will happen because they have to schedule it through the hospital but do know that Isaac will be less than thrilled about what they have to do. :? I'm sure you guys can use your imaginations about that. :shifty: Can't recall the name of the procedure (started with a v) but no cutting will be involved at least.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and thanks for all the well wishes my friends. To the others having health issues. My best to you all. Hugs and kisses my friends.

Thanks y'all. Well the appointment was scheduled a lot faster than I thought it would be. In fact it was today. They found the problem and now we wait for the urologist to read the report and tell us what can be done. Isaac is doing well and he said it wasn't as bad as he had feared. We were able to stay in there with him and while still giving him his privacy we could see the images on the screen. The doctor doing the procedure seemed optimistic about being able to correct it. So keep those fingers and toes crossed and keeping on praying.

:text-thankyoublue: :text-thankyouyellow: Thanks again my friends. :romance-grouphug: I hope you know how much your well wishes mean to me. Now I'm off to bed. :sleeping-sleeping: Two hours of broken sleep is not helping my mood nor my intellect. :text-blondmoment:

later gaters....

I'm not so sure I would be so quick to dismiss the observations of teachers. I know the perception that is out there, but I've seen both sides. I've seen treatment (both pharmaceutical and dietary) make a world of difference in kids' lives.

It's worth begin skeptical, but at some point, when everyone is telling you one thing, it might be time to give it a shot.

Seems like a lot of people around here are thinking it's bullshit because they've heard somewhere it's bullshit and I think that's bullshit.

Told y'all I'd let you know what the doctor said about my son. Well we met with the urologist yesterday evening.

Isaac has something called grade 2 reflux (there's another word in there beofre reflux but I can't recall it) Right now they are going to keep him on suppression anitbiotics and do an unltrasound in 6 months and another VSQ in a year. The hope is that he will out grow it. If he has any break through infections before the ultrasound or if the ultrasound shows it's getting worse, then there we told of two different operations that could help him. One more invasive than the other.

Both the doctor and we would prefer not to operate if medication and time can take care of the problem.

So basically we know what's causing it and we are hoping that his body will fix itself in time.

The Doctor did give us materials to read and reminded Isaac of the importance of telling us if he starts hurting again.

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers please.

And thanks for all the well wishes and concerns.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Love y'all

Hugs and kisses to my Jacarutu family

Well, I don't pray and I feel fairly uncomfortable keeping your son's nether regions in my thoughts... but I'm glad there's been progress and will continue to hope for improvement without operations. Will that be good? ;) :)

Yeah, that will do.

Besides, you know of course, when I asked to keep him in thoughts I meant his general welfare ___ not specific anatomical regions.
