Samuel L. Jackson announces 'Avengers' cast

Post by Freakzilla »

SAN DIEGO – Comic book fans no longer have to imagine what it might be like to see all their favorite superheroes in one place.
They got the chance Saturday at Comic-Con, when the cast of the forthcoming "Avengers" film took the stage. Samuel L. Jackson surprised some 6,000 fans gathered for a Marvel Studios presentation when he stepped out just as it was ending and started introducing the cast of "The Avengers."
Jackson brought out stars Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johannson, Chris Hemsworth of "Thor" and Chris Evans of "Captain America."
He then introduced another surprise guest, Robert Downey Jr., who brought out the rest of the all-star cast, including Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner.
"The Avengers" is based on the comic book series of the same name, which brings various Marvel superheroes together. The film is due in 2012.

Another new Chris Evans?

Of course it has; and they've been dropping hints in the individual movies.

Changes nothing, it's still part of the same lazy-assed Hollywood bullshit. Yawn.

I enjoyed the first Iron Man, haven't seen the second. Watched both Hulks but thought they were schlock, not even halfway decent scifi. What else has there been so far? Anyway, I haven't seen any of them in the theater (and won't); this is the stuff of DVDs and movie channels.

By the gods, don't even read any comics then, because if it's one thing superheroes aren't are even remotely believable scifi, especially with all the magic heroes living side-by-side to them. I mean, geez... gamma rays, radioactive spiders, cosmic rays; all as sources of super powers. Comic books are entertainment in the form of a modern mythology. Just as the ancients had their tales of Heracles and Gilgamesh, we have our Superman and Captain America. If you're looking for credible scifi material, comics are the last place to look.

Nevertheless, if it wasn't for comics I never would have been interested in learning how read when I did (age 5). I would have probably been another one of those stupid masses possibly later impressed by the schlock a certain hated author writes.

Also, the Dark Knight series are superior to the previous Burton films concerning the DC properties. As for Marvel, the first two X-Men films were excellent as were the Spider-Man films. The Iron Man film has been my favorite thus far and I want to see the sequel. There's the Mighty Thor coming up which has piqued my interest. On independent properties, Hellboy was an instant classic.

Yawn, more pervert suit movies.

Yet again Hollywood cashing in on a built in audience of drooling knobs who live in basements, jerk off to tentacle porn, and go around asking each other questions like, "Superman's sperm would punch through a woman's body the first time he ejaculated!"

I don't read comics but from what I've read of and looked into there are a few talented writers and artists doing interesting things, either with new characters or established ones. While the science is usually faulty most of it can be excused through scientific advancement marching forward over previous assumptions or as being a plot device. It only gets really retarded when some new writer feels they need to make it "realistic" and explain it away.

The thing with superhero movies is that they dumb down an already nearly-completely dumb media into a basic setup: origin + first villain, love-interest + new villain, questioning of self + new villain, and then a reboot. It's a formula that no one is really challenging simply because non-comic readers seem to assume comics are all about Superman punching people in the face and don't want to get into anything deeper (Superman Returns).

Comic book movies are better than 90% of the shit that's been coming out of Hollywood for the last 10 years. My problem is that once a movie is out for more than a week and I haven't seen it then I lose all interested and may or may not Netflix it in the future.

At least someone else gets it.... I'd prefer to watch a superhero in wacky spandex than yet another overrated, boring rags to riches story (Slumdog, I'm looking at you).

I don't.

Comics were something I read through when I was a little kid, out at Herb Clark's barber shop, while waiting for my turn in the chair. I think I bought one or two Supermans and some Weird Tales (or something like that), but that was it. I've collected a few manga editions since I've been in Japan, but I'm not really into them all that much either.

And THAT is an extremely sad comment on the state of Hollywood, because if this comic book crap is among the best, top 10% of the work they're doing, then the rest really is shit.

Me too. I think that's one I might actually go see in a theater. It's hard to get too motivated to go since I mounted a projector on my ceiling and made a screen that covers most of my wall.

The only thing I hate more than most movies is the people who go see them.

It does look interesting. Isn't based on a comic book or foreign movie or even a book.

Wow! A REAL movie movie!

I'm the same, while I was employed at the theatre, I would watch a movie by myself after hours. I took care of my janitors and they would have it all nice and clean for me, I would bring my own drinks and snacks and chill out.

My home set up is pretty damn good, hard to get worked up to see anything in the theatre any more.

I think I might see Inception this week. On a similar note, just watched The Prestige today and really liked it.

Movies based on Comic Books I liked:

300
Road to Perdition
Ghost World
Watchmen. (Could of been so much worse. The Under the Hood bits and the Black Freighter were actually decent)
V For Vendetta

I like Tim Burton's Batman flicks and Nolan's take as well.
Superman I've always been meh.

I would LOVE a Wonder Woman movie, especially if they went back to the roots of the character (ie bondage.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Moulton_Marston
Marston's Wonder Woman is often cited as an early example of bondage themes entering popular culture: physical submission appears again and again throughout Marston's comics work, with Wonder Woman and her criminal opponents frequently being tied up or otherwise restrained, and her Amazonian friends engaging in frequent wrestling and bondage play (possibly based on Marston's earlier research studies on sorority initiations). These elements were softened by later writers of the series.

They gave Wonder Woman some kind of update recently, didn't they? I would think that a movie is inevitable. I'm all for it, and when I say "it" I mean "bondage."

I thought Inception was great. It's got everything good about a Christopher Nolan movie. It's a masterpiece. And by "masterpiece" I mean "really good."
